PROGRAM ABSTRACTS FOR THE 15TH TRIENNIAL SYMPOSIUM ON AFRICAN ART Africa and Its Diasporas in the Market Place: Cultural Resources and the Global Economy The core theme of the 2011 ACASA symposium, proposed by Pamela Allara, examines the current status of Africa’s cultural resources and the influence—for good or ill—of market forces both inside and outside the continent. As nation states decline in influence and power, and corporations, private patrons and foundations increasingly determine the kinds of cultural production that will be supported, how is African art being reinterpreted and by whom? Are artists and scholars able to successfully articulate their own intellectual and cultural values in this climate? Is there anything we can do to address the situation? Chairs: Barbara Thompson, Stanford University, and Gemma Rodrigues, Fowler Museum at UCLA Contemporary African art is a phenomenon that transcends and complicates traditional curatorial categories and disciplinary boundaries. These overlaps have at times excluded contemporary African art from exhibitions and collections and, at other times, transformed its research and display into a contested terrain. At a moment when many museums with so‐called ethnographic collections are expanding their chronological reach by teasing out connections between traditional and contemporary artistic production, many museums of Euro‐American contemporary art are extending their geographic reach by globalizing their curatorial vision. -

Educational Inequality and Intergenerational Mobility in Africa∗ Alberto Alesina Sebastian Hohmann Harvard University, CEPR and NBER London Business School Stelios Michalopoulos Elias Papaioannou Brown University, CEPR and NBER London Business School and CEPR March 14, 2018 Abstract We investigate the evolution of inequality and intergenerational mobility in educational attainment in Africa. Using census data covering more than 50 million people in 23 countries we document the following regularities. First, since independence, inequality has fallen across countries and intergen- erational mobility has risen, reflecting the rise in education across the continent. Second, the overall drop in African inequality can be attributed mostly to declines in within-country, within-region and within-ethnicity components. Third, the initially moderate regional and ethnic differences in education persist, revealing strong inertia across these lines. Fourth, we describe the geography of educational mobility across regions and ethnic groups uncovering strong \poverty-trap" dynamics. Educational mo- bility is higher in regions and ethnicities with above-country-average schooling at independence. Fifth, we explore the geographic, historical, and contemporary correlates of intergenerational mobility both across regions and ethnic lines. Colonial investments correlate strongly with educational mobility, while geography and pre-colonial features play a lesser role. Il est probable que l’Afrique du Nord, très différente déjà du reste du continent et se rapprochant de l’Europe méditerra- néenne plus que de l’Afrique centrale et méridionale, était habi- tée par une autre race d’hommes. Selon toute probabilité, les Négrilles de l’époque antérieure à la venue des Noirs en Afrique devaient être des chasseurs et des pêcheurs, vivant à l’état semi-nomade qui convient à des hommes se livrant exclusivement à la chasse ou à la pêche. Leurs mœurs se rapprochaient vraisemblablement beaucoup de celles des Négrilles qui existent encore à l’heure actuelle et sans doute parlaient-ils, comme ceux-ci, des langues mi-isolantes mi-agglutinantes caractérisées, au point de vue phonétique, par le phénomène des « clics 1 » et par l’emploi des tons musicaux. Les grands arbres des forêts, les grottes des montagnes, des abris sous roche, des huttes de branchages ou d’écorces, des ha- bitations lacustres construites sur pilotis devaient leur servir, selon les régions, de résidences plus ou moins temporaires. Ethnic and Religious Intergenerational Mobility in Africa∗ Alberto Alesina Sebastian Hohmann Harvard University, CEPR and NBER London Business School Stelios Michalopoulos Elias Papaioannou Brown University, CEPR and NBER London Business School and CEPR September 27, 2018 Abstract We investigate the evolution of inequality and intergenerational mobility in educational attainment across ethnic and religious lines in Africa. Using census data covering more than 70 million people in 19 countries we document the following regularities. (1) There are large differences in intergenerational mobility both across and within countries across cultural groups. Most broadly, Christians are more mobile than Muslims who are more mobile than people following traditional religions. (2) The average country-wide education level of the group in the generation of individuals' parents is a strong predictor of group- level mobility in that more mobile groups also were previously more educated. This holds both across religions and ethnicities, within ethnicities controlling for religion and vice versa, as well as for two individuals from different groups growing up in the same region within a country. (3) Considering a range of variables, we find some evidence that mobility correlates negatively with discrimination in the political arena post indepdence, and that mobility is higher for groups that historically derived most of their subsistence from agriculture as opposed to pastoralism. Who are the Shanga? 1.0 The Shanga language The official classification is Niger-Congo, Mande, Eastern, Eastern, Busa. In other words Shanga belongs to the Niger- Congo branch of languages which includes most of the indigenous languages of Sub-Saharan Africa and is classified with the Mande family of languages. Most of these languages are in the centre or west of West Africa, but Shanga is towards the east, so belongs to the Eastern sub-group. Within that sub-grouping there are two clusters of languages, each cluster having some intelligibility between speakers. The Boko/Busa cluster includes Boko, Bokobaru, Bisã and Busa Illo, and the Kyanga cluster which includes Kyanga and Shanga. Shanga is not mutually intelligible with the Boko/Busa language speakers and there is only partial intelligibility with Kyanga. Lexical similarity is 81% with Kyanga, and an average of 65% with the Boko/Busa cluster. The Shanga are called Shanga or Shangawa (plural) by the Hausa and they call themselves Sã ngã̃̀, while the Kyanga at Bakinrua call them Sɛ̃ nga. It is probable that the original name was Sɛ̃ nga and the original name of the Kyanga was Kɛ̃ nga. In francophone countries the Kyanga are known as Tienga, while in Boko they are known as Kɛ̃ a. Shape-shifting nature in a contested landscape in Guinea-Bissau Joana Vaz de Sousa Department of Social Sciences Oxford Brookes University Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements of the Award of Doctor of Philosophy September 2014 i Abstract Studying people and wild animals based only on their strict and present-day interactions is not enough to develop a comprehensive understanding of social constructions of animal species. People encounter other species (and other people) from within particular historical, social, ecological and economic settings. In 13 months of fieldwork, I adopted a multi-disciplinary perspective, using qualitative ethnographic tools alongside quantitative ecological and interviewing approaches to seek for an in-depth understanding that provides access to multiple views about nature and nature conservation. In southern Guinea-Bissau, space and its history, magic and religion, changes in the landscape and environment, local livelihoods and trade, as well as local relations of power for accessing resources, all shape the social and cosmological terrain of the interactions between people and other living and non-living things. On the one hand, magical territories, the role animal figures play in witchcraft, local knowledge and its management, all portray nature as part of society, both as an element and an actor in society. On the other hand, when nature conservation initiatives based on fines and fences are emphasised, the social appropriation of nature envisions people and nature as separate, even antagonistic entities that negotiate each other’s existence. Land is the most important component of livelihoods as it is tightly connected to labour allocation and knowledge exchange. -
