Nevertheless, while there has been a substantial body of research dedicated to little magazine culture in Canada, its urban beginnings, and its contribution to the emergence of literary modernism, few studies have examined the development and influence of the little magazine in the Maritime Provinces. Taking as representative examples The Fiddlehead (1945- ), Katharsis (1967-1971), The Square Deal (1970-1971), Sand Patterns (1972-8), and The Antigonish Review ( 1970- ) - little magazines which have distinguished themselves in the region for breadth of readership and authorship, editorial leadership, and cultural activism - this thesis examines the literary, cultural, and political functions of Maritime literary magazines from the qi.id-nineteenth century up to the 1980s. Paying close attention to the political, social, and economic environments in which these magazines have emerged and to which they have responded, this thesis sets forth an editorial poetics of the Maritime little magazine. -

Joy Nozomi Kogawa (nee Nakayama) was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1935 to Japanese Canadian parents, Gordon Goichi Nakayama and Lois Masui Nakayama . Gordon G . Nakayama was a Japanese Anglican clergyman (the Nakayama-sensei in Joy' s novel Obasan) and had a significant role in the Japanese Canadian community before , during and after World War II . Lois was a kindergarten teacher and singer, and Joy' s brother Timothy is a clergyman, who worked in Alberta and Seattle, Washington, and is no w working in Okinawa, Japan. Joy and her family were evacuated from Vancouver along with thousands of other Japanese Canadians and moved to Slocan City, in interior British Columbia in 1942, where she had the primary education. The family then moved to Coaldale, Alberta in 1945 . She received a temporary license to teach from the Calgary branch of the University of Alberta in 1954 after attending a one year temporary license course in education, and taugh t elementary school in Coaldale. She studied theology at the University of Toronto and musi c at Royal Conservatory in Toronto in 1956 . She then moved back to Vancouver in 1957 , where she taught elementary school for one year . She attended the University of Saskatchewan in 1967 taking courses in English, philosophy and psychology. From December 1973 through 1975, she worked for Pierre Trudeau in the Correspondenc e Division of the Prime Minister's Office . -

Dates: 1951-2006 Physical Description: 9.4 m of textual records and other material Biographical Sketch: Brian Fawcett was born in Prince George on May 13, 1944. He completed elementary and secondary school in Prince George before leaving at the age of 22 to attend Simon Fraser University. After graduating with a B.A. (Honours) in 1969 from SFU, Fawcett went on to complete coursework for a M.A. in English Literature at SFU in 1972. After graduation, he worked as a Community Organizer and Urban Planner for the Greater Vancouver Regional District until 1988. Mr. Fawcett is a former Editor of "Books in Canada" and a former Columnist for the "Globe & Mail" newspaper. He has also written articles and reviews for many of Canada's major magazines. In addition, Fawcett has worked as a teacher of English and Creative Writing in federal maximum security penitentiaries. While living in Vancouver, he wrote My Career with the Leafs and Other Stories (1982), Capital Tales (1984), The Secret Journal of Alexander Mackenzie (1985), Cambodia (1986), and Public Eye (1990) as well as books of poetry. He moved to Toronto in 1990, where he became a full-time writer and published Gender Wars (1994), Disbeliever's Dictionary (1997), Virtual Clearcut (2003), Local Matters (2003), Human Happiness (2011), and The Last of the Lumbermen (2013), among others. -

The Honourable Edward D. Bayda, Q.C., LL.D. Former Chief Justice of Saskatchewan, the Honourable E.D. Bayda has provided long and distinguished leadership and service to the people of Saskatchewan and to the broader Canadian community. Mr. Bayda was appointed to the Saskatchewan Court of Queen’s Bench in 1972, served as a judge of that court until December 1974, when he was appointed to the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal. In 1981, he was appointed Chief Justice of Saskatchewan, a post he held for 25 years until retiring in 2006. He was the youngest Chief Justice ever appointed in Canada, the first born in Saskatchewan, the first of Ukrainian descent, and ultimately the longest serving provincial Chief Justice. During his judicial career, he provided meaningful contributions to Canadian public policy, serving as commissioner for the Vancouver Port Grain Handling Industrial Inquiry, and as chair of the Cluff Lake Board of Inquiry which examined the social, economic and ethical implications of the development of Saskatchewan’s uranium deposits. He played an important role in the work of the Canadian Judicial Council and the development of the standard against which the conduct of judges both on and off the bench should be measured. Mr. Bayda served as a bencher of the Law Society of Saskatchewan, as a member of the Law Reform Commission of Saskatchewan, as a former president of the Regina Bar Association, and as past chair of the Civil Justice Section of the Canadian Bar Association. He played an important role in defining the protected fundamental rights of citizens which are enshrined in the Charter of Rights and necessary to sustain our free and democratic society. -

HOWARD A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES AND RESEARCH IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT OF SECONDARY EDUCATION EDMONTON, ALBERTA WINTER 2006 Abstract The impetus for this study was the result of living with children on the coast of Newfoundland during the culmination of decades of blatant disregard for the marine ecosystem. The ensuing social upheaval underscored the deep interrelatedness of human culture and the living Earth. This research project is born of a belief that education, in its present form, may be an obstacle to a new understanding of our place in the living world. It proposes to see language as a way to re-vision what it means to dwell in place. Our society is in need of a highly ecologically literate citizenry. To achieve this we must move beyond the perspective of science that underlies many environmental education programs and recover an interpretive, moral, and human relationship with place. This study inquires into the pedagogical possibilities for nurturing ecological sensibility in children. The hermeneutic phenomenological methodology and the thematic analysis of children‘s written response to bioregional poetry revealed phenomenological insights of pedagogical value. As the children formed new ecological sensibilities, the interpretive practice was transformative for the researcher, deepening a sense of radical interconnectedness. Guided by the theory of ecological holism, this inquiry elaborates an experiential and embodied dimension of reader response theory. An important goal of the study is to understand literary engagement as nested in a larger web of relations that includes the cognitive, the biological, even the spiritual. -

MAPPING THE NATION Exploration and the English-Canadian Literary Imagination by CHERYL LYNNE CUNDELL A thesis submitted to the Department of English in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada March, 2009 Copyright © Cheryl Lynne Cundell, 2009 Abstract Focusing on the texts of James Cook, Samuel Hearne, Alexander Mackenzie, Archibald Menzies, David Thompson, and George Vancouver, Mapping the Nation: Exploration and the English-Canadian Literary Imagination argues that exploration writing is a subgenre of travel writing defined by its empirical perspective and function. Incorporated into the English-Canadian literary canon while being disparaged for its lack of literary qualities, exploration writing is used by English-Canadian literary histories, encyclopaedias, and companions to prove an environmentally deterministic developmental thesis of the national literature. The developmental thesis permeates anthologies that offer excerpts of exploration writing and discussions that pertain to the influence of exploration writing on later English-Canadian literature that returns to it. Returning to exploration writing addressing land exploration are Farley Mowat’s People of the Deer (1952), John Newlove’s “The Pride” (1965) and “Samuel Hearne in Wintertime” (1966), Don Gutteridge’s The Quest for North: Coppermine (1973), Marion R. Smith’s Koo-Koo-Sint: David Thompson in Western Canada (1976), and Brian Fawcett’s “The Secret Journal of Alexander Mackenzie” (1985). Returning to exploration writing addressing oceanic exploration are Earle Birney’s “Pacific Door” (1947), Damnation of Vancouver (1952), and “Captain Cook” (1961); P. K. Page’s “Cook’s Mountains” (1967); George Bowering’s George, Vancouver: A Discovery Poem (1970); Gutteridge’s Borderlands (1975), and George Bowering’s Burning Water (1980), Audrey Thomas’s “The Man with the Clam Eyes” (1982) and Intertidal Life (1984). -

The initial delights of renewed intimacy gives way to claustro phobic terrors as the visit lengthens. And then we have to leave. One com mon mark of the clan-apart from their having pretty well established reputa tions-is that at least three of these seven poets are editors too; three change hats to do reviews, and another arrangement of the group turns up four teachers. Should we call this the virtu of a genuine "renaissance" or see in it the sign of just how vertical the mosaic of Canadian letters is? Sometimes the family seems so compact as to be, frankly, incestuous. We are too close for comfort. Yet no closer than we need to be for survival. -

THE WIIJHÍNESS HHHIN According to Henry Kreisel, these sudden eruptions of violence prove that when the self is choked by physical and emotional restrictions it finds unsuspected outlets to relieve internal pressures. Kreisel adds that, in such cases, the individual is defeated by the same forces he has so eagerly tried to suppress: It is not surprising that there should be sudden eruptions and that the passions, long suppressed, should burst violently into the open and threaten the framework that was meant to contain them. (*4) This contemporary Canadian writer and critic also remarks that such violent manifestations bred by repression are generally exploited by novelists who find in illicit love affairs and their dramatic consequences a frame to sustain their plots. In prairie poetry, however, violence is often conveyed through poems that describe how an individual, who may be a child, takes delight in inflicting pain and suffering on -132- IHE WDJESNESS WïïffiN some other living creature, generally an animal. On the surface, these poems are cruel stories that are immediately felt and understood. Beneath the surface, but always suggested and imaged by it, is the solitude of the prairie and its life-constricting codes. 3.1.— FJÜOWERS OF BUOOBDr PATRICK LANE Patrick Lane is one of the Canadian artists who have most powerfully conveyed the idea that the apparent monotony of the prairie landscape and the puritan decorum of its society hide a convulsive reality which is ultimately a reflection of the cruelty and violence that pervade modern society. As Jean Mallinson points out, the method used by Lane to explore the darkest forces buried in the human psyche and the situations -133- THE WILDERNESS WHHIN in which they are likely to emerge is emblematic. -

The Irving Layton Collection: a bibliography The following bibliography lists the contents of the Irving Layton Collection. The Collection is housed in the Special Collections unit of the Queen Elizabeth II Library, Memorial University of Newfoundland. 1. Coleridge, Samuel Taylor. The Poetical Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. London: MacMillan & Co., 1924. This copy is inscribed by one “Irving Lazarr, of 4158 City Hall Ave, Montreal, Quebec, 1927. Student of Literature.” It contains on the front endpaper a note from Irving Layton, inscribed to John Metcalf: “who knows a good book and a good investment when he sees one.” There is also a note on the half-title by John Metcalf: “This copy of Coleridge belonged to Irving Layton when he was 15. Throughout the text the various passages marked show the sort of rhetoric that appealed to him then. At the back of the book he has listed pages he has read. When I showed him the book he claimed that he‟d changed his name to Lazarr because he‟d been writing a poems and needed a rhyme for near and „near and far‟.” 2. Flecker, James Elroy. The Collected Poems of James Elroy Flecker. London: Secker & Warburg, 1947. This is Irving Layton‟s copy, bearing his ownership signature on the front endpaper. 3. Plato. Five Dialogues. London: J.M. Dent & Sons, 1942. This copy bears Layton‟s ownership signature on the front endpaper, dated December 1946, with scoring and marginalia in his hand throughout, and a note on the rear endpaper about his reading. There is also what appears to be a poem, in two different states, on the rear endpapers. -
