Dates: 1951-2006 Physical Description: 9.4 m of textual records and other material Biographical Sketch: Brian Fawcett was born in Prince George on May 13, 1944. He completed elementary and secondary school in Prince George before leaving at the age of 22 to attend Simon Fraser University. After graduating with a B.A. (Honours) in 1969 from SFU, Fawcett went on to complete coursework for a M.A. in English Literature at SFU in 1972. After graduation, he worked as a Community Organizer and Urban Planner for the Greater Vancouver Regional District until 1988. Mr. Fawcett is a former Editor of "Books in Canada" and a former Columnist for the "Globe & Mail" newspaper. He has also written articles and reviews for many of Canada's major magazines. In addition, Fawcett has worked as a teacher of English and Creative Writing in federal maximum security penitentiaries. While living in Vancouver, he wrote My Career with the Leafs and Other Stories (1982), Capital Tales (1984), The Secret Journal of Alexander Mackenzie (1985), Cambodia (1986), and Public Eye (1990) as well as books of poetry. He moved to Toronto in 1990, where he became a full-time writer and published Gender Wars (1994), Disbeliever's Dictionary (1997), Virtual Clearcut (2003), Local Matters (2003), Human Happiness (2011), and The Last of the Lumbermen (2013), among others. Virtual Clearcut won the 2003 Pearson Prize for Canadian non-fiction. In 2001, he co-founded (with Stan Persky) the alternative news service www.dooneyscafe.com which he contributes to regularly. Custodial History: Donated by Brian Fawcett to the Geoffrey R. Weller Library, University of Northern British Columbia on October 15, 1996 and subsequently transferred to the Northern BC Archives. First accrual received in 2006. Scope and Content: Fonds consists of personal papers, books, manuscripts, photographic materials, audio recordings and electronic records arranged into eleven series, which relate to Brian Fawcett's personal life, his creative works and his relationships with members of the literary community. Arrangement Note: Arranged by the archivist. Restrictions: Due to the presence of third party personal information captured in the records of Brian Fawcett, some of these files may be restricted in full or in part. Series 2: Personal Papers 1951-2006 2.7 m of textual records Series consists of correspondence, school records, teaching materials, legal agreements and miscellaneous textual material dating from 1951 to 1996, which relate to Brian Fawcett's personal life, his work and his writing. Includes three subseries: Personal Correspondence, Personal Records, and Journals. Series 3: Graphic Materials [between 1960 and 2006] 569 photographs Series consists of photographs, negatives, and slides of Brian Fawcett, his family, friends and colleagues. Also includes artwork by the Fawcett family and friends. Series 4: Audiovisual Material 1977-2004 37 sound recordings – 13 video recordings Series consists of sound recordings and video recordings created by or accumulated by Brian Fawcett. Series 5: Electronic Media 1980-2004 76 3½-inch floppy disks – 3 CD-ROMs – 1 DVD Series consists of computer disks containing working files of draft and final manuscripts, correspondence, notes, poetry and miscellaneous textual materials. Series 6: Poetry [after 1960] 1 m of textual records Series consists of unpublished poetry and published poetry anthologies by Brian Fawcett, including "Permanent Relationships" (1975), "Creatures of State" (1977), "Tristram's Book" (1981), and "Aggressive Transport" (1982). Fawcett stopped publishing poetry after 1982, although he did not stop producing it. These "suppressed poems" are also included. Many poems are untitled and unidentified. Series 8: Novels [after 1960] 1 m of textual records Series consists of draft manuscripts and published editions of Brian Fawcett's novels. Includes manuscripts and notes for "The Opening: Prince George, Finally" (1974) and "Gender Wars: A Novel and Some Conversation about Sex and Gender" (1994). Also includes manuscripts for various unpublished or revised works. Series 9: Non-Fiction [after 1960] 8 m of textual records Series consists of draft manuscripts and published editions of Brian Fawcett's non-fiction work, including "Unusual Circumstances, Interesting Times and Other Impolite Interventions" (1991), "The Compact Garden: Discovering the Pleasures of Planting in a Small Space" (1992), "The Disbeliever's Dictionary: A Completely Disrespectful Lexicon of Canada Today" (1997), "Virtual Clearcut, or The Way Things Are in my Hometown" (2003), and "Local Matters: A Defence of Dooney's Cafe and other Non-Globalized Places, People, and Ideas" (2003). Also includes manuscripts for various unpublished or revised works, as well as many miscellaneous essays and articles written for periodicals. Series 10: Notebooks 1970-1995 1 m of textual records Series contains notebooks written by Brian Fawcett. Series 11: Works by Others 1969-1995 1 m of textual records Series consists of books, draft manuscripts of published works, newspaper and magazine clippings, unpublished poetry and miscellaneous textual material created by authors other than Brian Fawcett that contextualize Fawcett's literary community.
