This would be a profound mistake. Chris Hedges’ analysis is not only applicable but important. Hedges, author of the National Book Critics Circle–nominated War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning (2002), has given those who consider themselves genocide scholars much to think about and to apply to their concerns.

The greater the currency of the words freedom and democracy, the more pervasive the forms of social control with new technologies of surveillance and monitoring underpinned by an indefinite War on Terror; the greater the demand for more mobile, more cheap and more flexible labour, the more the significance of borders and impulse to reactive nationalism; the greater the appeal to economic growth, the more the precaricity and insecurity in our communities and widening of social division. There is a baroque aesthetic form in the making that extrapolates the world of representation from the world of lived reality to the absolute extreme. It is a grand project of abstraction become viral and truthfully mirrors an economic reality in which monetary exchanges for necessary commodities are a tiny fraction of the amount produced for speculation. In such terms at least, our lived reality is sedimented at the bottom of a seismic flow of transnational speculative capital. Sustaining a belief out of this falls to the labour of the professional classes today; theirs is the imaginative task of ‘consensualising’ the contradictions.     RUDIN_PUBLISHERPROOF_3.28.18 .DOCX (DO NOT DELETE) 4/14/18 9:16 PM “YOU CAN’T BE HERE”: THE HOMELESS AND THE RIGHT TO REMAIN IN PUBLIC SPACE DAVID RUDIN∞ ABSTRACT In cities throughout the country, homeless individuals are continuously relocated from place to place and faced with the quandary that by engaging in basic life activities they are breaking the law. Many of these individuals and their legal advocates have argued that laws prohibiting the homeless from sleeping or sitting down in public make it effectively impossible for them to exist, violating the Eighth Amendment ban on cruel and unusual punishments and the right to travel derived from the Fourteenth Amendment. However, the vast majority of courts have rejected these arguments because they do not readily fit into existing doctrines. This article argues that the Supreme Court’s decision in Obergefell v. Hodges provides a mold for homeless individuals and their advocates to recast challenges to anti-homeless ordinances and regularly-issued move-along orders into a more compelling form. In Obergefell, the Supreme Court recognized the right to same- sex marriage by looking at the confluence of several different lines of case law and allowing concerns for equality to guide its substantive due process analysis. This article follows the mode of substantive due process analysis that Obergefell endorsed and focuses on the connections between the right to movement, the Eighth Amendment, Fourth Amendment privacy concerns, the attention to inequality motivating applications of the right to travel, and the Court’s vagueness cases as they relate to vagrancy and public spaces.

Barry Crimmins, best known as a comedian and political satirist, bravely tells his incredible story of transformation with intimate interviews from comedians such as David Cross, Margaret Cho and Patton Oswalt, activists such as Billy Bragg and Cindy Sheehan and directed in inimitable style by Bobcat Goldthwait (World’s Greatest Dad/God Bless America/Willow Creek). As a young and hungry comic in the early 80’s Barry Crimmins founded his own comedy club in Boston, in a Chinese restaurant called the Ding Ho. Here he fostered the careers of new talent who we now know as Steven Wright, Paula Poundstone, Denis Leary, Lenny Clarke, Kevin Meaney, Bobcat Goldthwait, Tom Kenny and many others. These comics were grateful for Barry’s fair pay and passionate support and respected him as a whip-smart comic himself but, as becomes clear in their interviews, they also knew he was tortured by his past. As archive footage of Barry shows, he was thickly mustachioed, thick set and thinly disguising an undercurrent of rage beneath his beer swilling onstage act. It seemed Barry was the fierce defender of the little guy but also an angry force when confronted. As one of the top new comedians in the country he appeared on The HBO Young Comedians Special, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, Evening at the Improv and many other television shows in the 80’s.

MUSIC FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MASSES: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY, THE RECORDING INDUSTRY, AND PUNK ROCK IN THE COLD WAR by MINDY CLEGG Under the Direction of ALEX SAYF CUMMINGS, PhD ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the connections between US foreign policy initiatives, the global expansion of the American recording industry, and the rise of punk in the 1970s and 1980s. The material support of the US government contributed to the globalization of the recording industry and functioned as a facet American-style consumerism. As American culture spread, so did questions about the Cold War and consumerism. As young people began to question the Cold War order they still consumed American mass culture as a way of rebelling against the establishment. But corporations complicit in the Cold War produced this mass culture. Punks embraced cultural rebellion like hippies.
