The largely stand- ardised buildings along the Albula line were built during the period of the Swiss timber style of architecture. Indeed, these natural and cultural assets have plenty to offer: en- chanting cityscapes, unique landscapes, historic legacies and hidden treasures. Much of this heritage was left to us by our ancestors, but nature has also played its part in making the World Heritage properties an endless source of amazement. There are three natural and nine cultur- al assets in total – and as unique as each site is, they all have one thing in common: the universal value that we share with the global community. “World Heritage Experience Switzerland” (WHES) is the umbrella organisation for the tourist network of UNESCO World Heritage properties in Switzerland. We see ourselves as a driving force for a more profound and responsible form of tourism based on respect and appreciation.     GLACIER EXPRESS PANORAMA CARRIAGES Rhätische Bahn (RhB) and Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB), Switzerland In December 2003, February 2008 and December 2010, RhB and MGB ordered a total of 34 carriages from Stadler for the Glacier Express, probably the most famous train in the world. In a seven-hour journey, the Glacier Express covers the line from Zermatt to Davos or St. Moritz. Passengers can enjoy views over unspoiled mountain scenery, classy health resorts, deep gorges, gentle valleys, 91 tunnels and 291 impressive bridges through the panoramic windows. A non-dazzling central lighting strip guarantees pleasant distribution of light. The HVAC units ensure an optimum climate in the trains all year round. In order to make the passen- gers feel even more comfortable, they are served food and drinks at their seats. They can receive detailed information about the sections they are travelling on via a headset.     Strasbourg, 15 December 2009 MIN-LANG/PR (2010) 1 EUROPEAN CHARTER FOR REGIONAL OR MINORITY LANGUAGES Fourth Periodical Report presented to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe in accordance with Article 15 of the Charter SWITZERLAND Periodical report relating to the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages Fourth report by Switzerland 4 December 2009 SUMMARY OF THE REPORT Switzerland ratified the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (Charter) in 1997. The Charter came into force on 1 April 1998. Article 15 of the Charter requires states to present a report to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe on the policy and measures adopted by them to implement its provisions. Switzerland‘s first report was submitted to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe in September 1999. Since then, Switzerland has submitted reports at three-yearly intervals (December 2002 and May 2006) on developments in the implementation of the Charter, with explanations relating to changes in the language situation in the country, new legal instruments and implementation of the recommendations of the Committee of Ministers and the Council of Europe committee of experts. This document is the fourth periodical report by Switzerland. The report is divided into a preliminary section and three main parts. The preliminary section presents the historical, economic, legal, political and demographic context as it affects the language situation in Switzerland. The main changes since the third report include the enactment of the federal law on national languages and understanding between linguistic communities (Languages Law) (FF 2007 6557) and the new model for teaching the national languages at school (—HarmoS“ intercantonal agreement).

Premessa e politica energetica cantonale La realizzazione del progetto «Lago Bianco» rappresenta per la Valle, e in modo particolare per il Comune di Poschiavo, una straordinaria occasione di sviluppo, basata sull’utilizzo di un’importante risorsa naturale come l’acqua. Anche dal punto di vista del Cantone, essendo Repower l’unica società grigionese attiva su tutta la filiera del mercato energetico, l’iniziativa assume una valenza strategica. In questo senso è dunque pienamente soddisfacente quanto il Governo scrive nel rapporto esplicativo sulla revisione parziale della Legge sui dirit- ti d’acqua del Cantone dei Grigioni (LGDA) sotto “Politica Futura”; in essa, si cita testualmente, “si mira a fare in modo che siano le società insediate nel Cantone a generare la cifra d’affari per l’approvvigionamento e in particolare per il commercio.

    University of Toronto Faculty, Staff, and Student Awards and Honours Governing Council Meeting October 23, 2008 Faculty & Staff Awards Professor Emeritus Paul Aird of forestry is the winner of the Endangered Species Stewardship Award, presented to him by Donna Cansfield, Ontario minister of natural resources, at a natural History Day event, held May 24 at Bonnechere Provincial Park in Renfrew County. Aird was honoured for his volunteer contributions related to Kirtland’s Warbler over the past 30-plus years, not only raising public awareness for this particular species at risk but for having made an important contribution towards recovery of this globally rare bird in Ontario. Keith Ambachtsheer, director of the Rotman International Centre for Pension Management, is the recipient of the James R. Vertin Award, given by the CFA (chartered financial analyst) Institute to recognize individuals who have produced a body of research notable for its relevance and enduring value to investment professionals. Ambachtsheer received the award July 22 at the 50th Financial Analysts Seminar, a CFA Institute conference hosted by the CFA Society of Chicago. Francesca Andrade of financial services is this year’s winner of U of T Scarborough’s Patrick Phillips Staff Award for outstanding service and commitment by a campus staff member, while Svetlana Mikhaylichenko of physical and environmental sciences is the recipient the D.R. Campbell Merit Award for enhancing the quality of life on campus. Professor Janet Potter of physical and environmental sciences is the winner of the Faculty Teaching Award. The Principal’s Awards were presented in June at an event hosted by Principal Franco Vaccarino.
