And it does so in a brilliant way: the railway line blends in perfectly with the grandiose landscape. The line between Thusis and Tirano has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008. Over 122 kilometres through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges: the route of the Bernina Express is an engineering masterpiece.

From Thusis, the RhB climbs through helical tunnels and over viaducts up the Albula Valley towards St. Moritz. This line, em- bedded harmoniously in the landscape, is a showpiece dating back to the time of railway pioneering and is part of the RhB UNESCO World Heritage.

The routes of the Albula and Bernina lines have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage lists, as they are considered masterpieces of their era, when building railways was down to visionary pioneers. From Thusis in the north to Tirano in Italy, the RhB train makes its way through three different language areas and past numerous sights. The most famous of these are the Solis viaduct, Landwasser viaduct, the helical tunnels between Bergün and Preda, the and the circular viaduct of Brusio.

The ingenious Landwasser viaduct stands on the Albula line, halfway between Chur and St. Moritz. This outstanding structure is 142 metres long, 65 metres high and supported by five brick pillars. You need to take some time to appreciate this ama- zing bridge. The viaduct observation area at Filisur offers the perfect place to do so. In summer it is accessible starting at the Filisur train station, and is easily reached with the choo-choo train. In just 30 minutes the Landwasser-Express transports small and large excursions’ guests to view the Landwasser viaduct.
