When we crack open a book, we are introduced to the author’s world, but through the lens of our own imagination. Characters we’ve never met start to meld with people in our own lives. The act of reading is theatrical. It is engaging in a shared act of imagining, a form of play.

That shared act of imagining drives this exploration of Little Women. This is not a museum. It doesn’t seek to cover every detail of a 472-page book.

Instead, we are chasing the spirit that is deeply alive in this story. Alcott’s writing, while beloved for its warm, honest characters, was also wildly progressive. These vivid, imperfect sisters and their world have inspired generations, and Jo in particular has been a patron saint for independent spirits. How do we keep that spark alive in our new version?

While this story has comforted so many over time, it’s also filled with challenge. It challenges us to be brave enough to find and use our voices. It challenges our ideas of living in community with those who are very different, and is unflinching in its belief that happiness in life is found through giving back to others.

Adaptation allows us to both honor the source, and create something completely new. My artistic home, the Jungle Theater, commissioned Kate Hamill to write this piece because we were excited about how her energetic and contemporary sensibility would re-energize Alcott’s novel and allow this story to be shared anew.

That’s where you come in. We are continuing a conversation that a young woman named Louisa May Alcott started over 150 years ago. You are seeing a play that was written for this moment in time.

We can only ever be where we are. And we are so glad to be with you today.

Warmly,

Sarah Rasmussen Director

In 2009, with the generous support of Diane and Hal Brierley, Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty reinstated Dallas Theater Center’s resident acting company. His intent was to develop and nurture professional actors within the North Texas community and enable them to make Dallas their artistic home. At the same time, he sought to enhance Dallas Theater Center’s artistic profile and create ongoing collaborative relationships. The eight-member Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company has since become a signature component of Dallas Theater Center’s presence in the Dallas Arts District.
