• A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Lip-Syncing in American and Indian Film Lucie Alaimo
Unsung Heroes? A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Lip-Syncing in American and Indian Film Lucie Alaimo Who are these unsung heroes? They are the voice-dubbers in Hollywood film. Throughout the history of Hollywood, actors and actresses have resorted to voice-dubbing in films in which they have had singing numbers. However, in American music performance practices, especially in the popular music and film industries, lip-syncing is often criticized, leading to debate over the technique. In comparison, Bollywood films also feature voice- dubbing, and although there is hostility towards this technique in Hollywood, it is perfectly acceptable in the Indian film industry. The majority of Bollywood films feature singing, and in all, it is the role of the voice-dubbers, also known as playback singers, to provide voices for the film stars. In addition, many of Bollywood’s playback singers have become as popular as, if not more than, the actors and actresses for whom they sing. Much of the reason for this stark difference in acceptance of voice-dubbers is found in the different ideologies of authenticity surrounding the use of lip-syncing. In North America, listeners expect perfection in the performances, yet are disappointed when discovering that there are elements of inauthenticity in them. Yet in India, both film producers and audiences have accepted the need for the talents of multiple people to become involved in the film production. In this paper, I will first discuss ideologies surrounding musical authenticity, then compare how these discourses have shaped and influenced the acceptance or rejection of voice-dubbers in Hollywood and Bollywood films.

  • Playback Singers of Bollywood and Hollywood
ILLUSION AND REALITY: PLAYBACK SINGERS OF BOLLYWOOD AND HOLLYWOOD By MYRNA JUNE LAYTON Submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF LITERATURE AND PHILOSOPHY in the subject MUSICOLOGY at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA. SUPERVISOR: PROF. M. DUBY JANUARY 2013 Student number: 4202027-1 I declare that ILLUSION AND REALITY: PLAYBACK SINGERS OF BOLLYWOOD AND HOLLYWOOD is my own work and that all the sources that I have used or quoted have been indicated and acknowledged by means of complete references. SIGNATURE DATE (MRS M LAYTON) Preface I would like to thank the two supervisors who worked with me at UNISA, Marie Jorritsma who got me started on my reading and writing, and Marc Duby, who saw me through to the end. Marni Nixon was most helpful to me, willing to talk with me and discuss her experiences recording songs for Hollywood studios. It was much more difficult to locate people who work in the Bollywood film industry, but two people were helpful and willing to talk to me; Craig Pruess and Deepa Nair have been very gracious about corresponding with me via email. Lastly, putting the whole document together, which seemed an overwhelming chore, was made much easier because of the expert formatting and editing of my daughter Nancy Heiss, sometimes assisted by her husband Andrew Heiss. Joe Bonyata, a good friend who also happens to be an editor and publisher, did a final read-through to look for small details I might have missed, and of course, he found plenty. For this I am grateful.

  • Semiotic Approach to the Analysis of Interpersonal Communication in Modern Comedies
SEMIOTIC APPROACH TO THE ANALYSIS OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION IN MODERN COMEDIES Maria Kochetkova A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2010 Committee: Ellen W Gorsevski, Advisor Lara Lengel Donald McQuarie © 2010 Maria Kochetkova All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ellen W Gorsevski, Advisor The present research takes a cultural prospective on the tensions in interpersonal relations based on the movies of the 90’s, such as Sleepless in Seattle (1993), As Good As It Gets (1997), and You’ve Got Mail (1998). The romantic comedy films of the 90’s were innovative in their genre, for they have touched upon serious drama subjects, hiding behind the “romantic” and “comedy’ style. Through the prism of the semiotic analysis I try to analyze how cultural codes play into the formation of hidden conflicts in interpersonal communication, mainly loneliness. Umberto Eco’s theory of the openness of the “author’s message” permits to illustrate the many possibilities of interpretation by the audience of the given films and allows an in-depth analysis of the cultural situation. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Firstly, I would like to thank my advisor, Dr Ellen Gorsevski, who has not only supported me throughout this process, but through her guidance I was able to see my research in a different way. I would like to thank my family, especially my mom and dad, Natalia and Alexander, without whom not only this project would not be possible, but only through their guidance and support I was able to understand the true meaning of education.

  • MARRIAGE MOVIES – Date Night Recommendations 50 First Dates
MARRIAGE MOVIES – Date Night Recommendations 50 First Dates - What woman doesn’t long for a man who loves her enough to make her fall in love with him every day? In 50 First Dates, Adam Sandler must do exactly that. Drew Barrymore’s character, Lucy, has a head injury that prevents her from converting short-term memories to long-term memories. Every day he must go through the process of winning her again, which lends itself to much humor. An Affair to Remember, 1957 - Foreshadowing many of the romantic comedies of our time, a couple falls in love in Europe and agrees to meet 6 months later at the Empire State Building. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr star in this remake of a 1936 film called Love Affair. Away From Her (2007) - "I never thought I'd be away from her". The incredibly strong bonds of a 44-year marriage that has reached soul mate status. Illustrates the loss and loneliness of losing a mate (Julie Christie) and the meaning of true love - wanting to sacrifice to make your mate happy. Some review it as a movie about Alzheimer's but I see it as being about the profound love, attachment, and sacrifice in a long-term marriage. Casablanca Don Juan de Marco (especially for older couples) Family Man - Ups and downs between a husband (Nicolas Cage) and wife (Tea Leoni), but the moral of the story is that the family relationships that are built are far more important than the success and money earned in a life alone. Groundhog Day It Happened One Night - Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, is the story of a woman tired of her rich family telling her what to do, who decides to jump off the side of her father's yacht in Miami and make her way back up to New York to see the man that her parents have swept her away from.

The insS of Leo McCarey Abstract Leo McCarey has received little tta ention from film scholars. His sentimentalizing his Catholic background and his preoccupation with anti-Communism obscured the lasting value of much of his work. • Fado and Fatima: Salazar's Portugal in US Film Fiction the Estado Novo
Fado and Fatima: Salazar’s Portugal in US Film Fiction The Estado Novo (‘New State’), the right-wing dictatorship which ruled Portugal between 1933 and 1974, summed up its core values with the slogan ‘God, Fatherland, and Family’, but its critics have long ago coined an alternative tripartite formula to describe the regime founded by António de Oliveira Salazar: Fatima, fado, and football.1 More than denouncing the regime’s environment of alienation, the so- called ‘three Fs’ highlight a set of key cultural symbols espoused by official propaganda.2 Fado referred to a type of acoustic ballad associated with melancholic themes and typically sung in working class taverns (‘fado houses’), accompanied by a Portuguese guitar. Fatima referred to the parish where sightings of the Virgin Mary (‘Our Lady of Fatima’) were reported in 1917, culminating in extraordinary solar activity that allegedly affected thousands of pilgrims, accepted by the Vatican as the ‘Miracle of the Sun’. Given their iconic role in domestic propaganda about Portuguese identity as well as in building the country’s tourist-friendly international image, this article will examine how the film industry of the United States – which dominated the world’s screens throughout the Estado Novo – engaged with those two symbols (football, known in the US as ‘soccer’ and traditionally unpopular among US audiences, was understandably absent). Until 1974, Hollywood released almost three dozen productions set (at least partially) in Portugal that not only ignored the most controversial traits of the Salazar dictatorship – political repression, widespread poverty, colonial wars – but also reinforced cultural pillars of the regime.3 In order to better understand this phenomenon, the article will begin by briefly contextualizing the evolution of Portugal’s presence in US film fiction.

Following his father’s wishes, he studied law at the University of Southern California, but was the first to admit he was a failure at the legal profession. During his first year at USC, he fell five floors in an elevator and broke his legs. While convalescing, he practiced six hours a day on the piano, an instrument he had studied as a child, and later described that period as being the first time in his life he was able to do something he loved. After completing law school, he spent a short time working in mining, including a Utah copper mine that he had purchased stock in with the $2,000 in damages he had received from his elevator accident (the stock proved worthless). After many unsuccessful attempts to get into the movie studios, a friend introduced him to Tod Browning, the director of the 1931 classic DRACULA, who invited him to work as his 3rd assistant director at Universal.
