Discussion Questions for Women in Film Gathering, September 11, 2012
1 Discussion Questions for Women in Film Gathering, September 11, 2012: Focal Film: Heartburn (1986; U.S.; Written by Nora Ephron; Directed by Mike Nichols) Nora Ephron (1941‐2012) was a journalist, playwright, novelist, producer, screenwriter, and director. She was one of the most prominent female talents ever to work in American film. Nora Ephron was the eldest of four daughters born to screenwriters Henry and Phoebe Ephron (Belles on Their Toes, Carousel, Desk Set, There’s No Business Like Show Business, Take Her She’s Mine (loosely based on the letters Nora sent home from college)). Growing up in Beverly Hills, Nora had contact with many great Hollywood writers of the 1940s and 1950s (e.g., Charles Brackett, Julius Epstein). At then all‐female Wellesley, she encountered many young women seeking their “MRS” degree; she later claimed that her alma mater had turned out a generation of “docile women.” She chose a career track, working as a journalist for The New York Post and Esquire, and eventually transitioned into novels and screenplays. All four of the daughters of Henry and Phoebe Ephron became successful writers. Nora Ephron wrote the roman à clef Heartburn in 1983, a novelization of her volatile second marriage to Carl Bernstein of Washington Post/Watergate fame. The novel was adapted for film in 1986, with friend and frequent collaborator Mike Nichols directing. Some other Ephron films you might recognize are Silkwood (1983; Screenwriter), When Harry Met Sally (1989; Producer and Screenwriter), My Blue Heaven (1990; Producer and Screenwriter), Sleepless in Seattle (1993; Director and Screenwriter), Michael (1996; Producer, Director, and Screenwriter), You’ve Got Mail (1998; Producer, Director, and Screenwriter), and Julie and Julia (2009; Producer, Director, and Screenwriter). -

WEIDONG WANG et al: EVALUATION OF CHINA'S PROVINCIAL REGIONAL INNOVATION PERFORMANCE AS … Evaluation of China's Provincial Regional Innovation Performance as Exemplified by Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Guangdong, and Zhejiang Weidong Wang* Rongmian Huo School of Humanities and Social Sciences China Jiliang University Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, 310018, China e-mail: [email protected] *Corresponding author Abstract — In this work, China's provincial regional innovation performance is evaluated using the index system in the Annual Report of Regional Innovation Capability of China (data for 2014). Three theoretical hypotheses are proposed based on a summary of existing research. The first one states that the innovation capability of an enterprise is closely related to the regional innovation performance. The second hypothesizes that knowledge creation capacity is directly proportional to regional sustainable development indices. The third suggests that knowledge acquisition capacity is positively correlated with an enterprise's capacity to improve the technological and international competitiveness of regional industries. Principal component analysis (PCA) is subsequently used to establish a model using the Stata software package (v12). The relationships between China's regional innovation performance and some relevant indices are revealed for five provinces and cities in China. Therefore, the hypotheses are essentially verified by our research conclusions and three policy suggestions for improving regional innovation performance are also -

Female Moments/Male Structures: The Representation of Women in Romantic Comedies Jordan Scharaga April 24, 2017 Submitted to the Faculty of Ursinus College in fulfillment of the requirements for Distinguished Honors in the Media and Communication Studies Department. Abstract: Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl again. With this formula it seems that romantic comedies are actually meant for men instead of women. If this is the case, then why do women watch these films? The repetition of female stars like Katharine Hepburn, Doris Day and Meg Ryan in romantic comedies allows audiences to find elements of truth in their characters as they grapple with the input of others in their life choices, combat the anxiety of being single, and prove they are less sexually naïve than society would like to admit. -

The London School of Economics and Political Science A neoliberalizing Chinese cinema: political economy of the Chinese film industry in post-WTO China Xiaoxi Zhu A thesis submitted to the Department of Media and Communications of the London School of Economics for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy London, March 2019 1 Declaration I certify that the thesis I have presented for examination for the MPhil/PhD degree of the London School of Economics and Political Science is solely my own work other than where I have clearly indicated that it is the work of others (in which case the extent of any work carried out jointly by me and any other person is clearly identified in it). I declare that my thesis consists of 71012 words. 2 Abstract This thesis aims to investigate the industry restructuration of the Chinese film industry in the context of China integrating into the global neoliberal capitalist system since its WTO entry in 2002. By interrogating the power dynamics between the Party-state, domestic capital and transnational media capital, this thesis explores respective roles each of the three stakeholders have played in shaping the commercialization and marketization of the Chinese film industry. Methodically, this thesis primarily relies on elite interviews with industry professionals, together with critical discourse analysis of one key policy document, and secondary data collected from news outlets, trade publications, industry reports, etc. -

A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Lip-Syncing in American and Indian Film Lucie Alaimo
Unsung Heroes? A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Lip-Syncing in American and Indian Film Lucie Alaimo Who are these unsung heroes? They are the voice-dubbers in Hollywood film. Throughout the history of Hollywood, actors and actresses have resorted to voice-dubbing in films in which they have had singing numbers. However, in American music performance practices, especially in the popular music and film industries, lip-syncing is often criticized, leading to debate over the technique. In comparison, Bollywood films also feature voice- dubbing, and although there is hostility towards this technique in Hollywood, it is perfectly acceptable in the Indian film industry. The majority of Bollywood films feature singing, and in all, it is the role of the voice-dubbers, also known as playback singers, to provide voices for the film stars. In addition, many of Bollywood’s playback singers have become as popular as, if not more than, the actors and actresses for whom they sing. Much of the reason for this stark difference in acceptance of voice-dubbers is found in the different ideologies of authenticity surrounding the use of lip-syncing. In North America, listeners expect perfection in the performances, yet are disappointed when discovering that there are elements of inauthenticity in them. Yet in India, both film producers and audiences have accepted the need for the talents of multiple people to become involved in the film production. In this paper, I will first discuss ideologies surrounding musical authenticity, then compare how these discourses have shaped and influenced the acceptance or rejection of voice-dubbers in Hollywood and Bollywood films. -

Cleaning the Security Apparatus Before the Two Meetings
ASIA PROGRAMME CLEANING THE SECURITY APPARATUS BEFORE THE TWO MEETINGS BY ALEX PAYETTE PH.D, CEO CERCIUS GROUP ADJUNCT PROFESSOR, GLENDON COLLEGE MAY 2020 ASIA FOCUS #139 l’IRIS ASIA FOCUS #139 – ASIA PROGRAMME / May 2020 n April 19 2020, Sun Lijun 孙力军 was put under investigation. Sun is the mishu of Meng Jianzhu 孟建柱, Party secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs o Commission [zhengfa] from 2012 to 2017, and a close ally of Politburo member Han Zheng 韩正, who is also a full member of Jiang Zemin’s 江泽民 Shanghai Gang 上海帮 . His arrest, which happened only one day after 15 pro-democracy activists were arrested in Hong Kong1, almost coincided with his return from Wuhan – as part of the Covid-19 containment steering group 中央赴湖北指导组. To this effect, it is evident that Sun’s investigation and arrest have been in motion for quite a while now. With Sun out of play, the former public security “tsar” Zhou Yongkang 周永康 has effectively lost most of his tentacles on the public security system. That said, Sun’s arrest might not even be the most important news shaking up the public security apparatus ahead of the upcoming “Two Meetings” 两会. CUTTING THE ROOTS As it is customary with Cadres working for public security, State security and national Defence, Sun Lijun’s public profile is quite limited. Sun, who studied in Australia, majored in public health and urban management, a very interesting choice especially considering the current pandemic. Sun was primarily active in Shanghai, and held a number of notable posts in his career including: • Director of the Hong Kong affairs office of the Ministry of Public Security from 2016 until his arrest; • Deputy director of the infamous “610” unit 中央610办公室– also known as the Central Leading Group on Preventing and Dealing with Heretical Religions 中央防范 和处理邪教问题领导小组2; • Director of the No. -
Adaptation of Shakespeare in Recent Bollywood Movies Dr
Adaptation of Shakespeare in Recent Bollywood Movies Dr. Charu C Mishra Assoc. Prof. (English) KG Arts & Science College Raigarh, Chhatisgarh India Abstract Thanks to our drama professor who initiated us to the sheer joy of reading the high flown language and acting in Shakespeare‟s plays that eventually left us spellbound for life. Watching Shakespeare‟s plays in theatre for the yester year English educated Indians has been a hobby. This infatuation with the greatest dramatist has led some Film directors to experiment on the themes of comedies and tragedies. In recent years, director Vishal Bhardwaj holds the credit of adapting themes of his great tragedies to contemporary situation and work wonder through his experimentation. Maqbool is a 2003 Indian crime drama, an adaptation of the play Macbeth. The film had its North American premiere at the 2003 Toronto International Film Festival and was screened in the Marché du Film section of the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Bhardwaj then moved on to adapt Othello in his 2006 film Omkara which won him commercial as well as critical success and Francis Ford Coppola's attention. Haider is the third installment of Bhardwaj's Shakespearean trilogy. The film is a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet, set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir during conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. The film was screened at the 19th Busan International Film Festival and released worldwide on 2 October 2014 to wide critical acclaim, and garnered attention from the media due to its controversial subject matter. The present paper intends to study how the movies inspired by Shakespeare still appeal 21st century audience to concur his universality in changing times.
