    religions Article Reassessing Religion and Politics in the Life of Jagjivan Ram¯ Peter Friedlander South and South East Asian Studies Program, School of Culture History and Language, College of Asia and the Pacific, Australian National University, Canberra, ACT 2600, Australia; [email protected] Received: 13 March 2020; Accepted: 23 April 2020; Published: 1 May 2020 Abstract: Jagjivan Ram (1908–1986) was, for more than four decades, the leading figure from India’s Dalit communities in the Indian National Congress party. In this paper, I argue that the relationship between religion and politics in Jagjivan Ram’s career needs to be reassessed. This is because the common perception of him as a secular politician has overlooked the role that his religious beliefs played in forming his political views. Instead, I argue that his faith in a Dalit Hindu poet-saint called Ravidas¯ was fundamental to his political career. Acknowledging the role that religion played in Jagjivan Ram’s life also allows us to situate discussions of his life in the context of contemporary debates about religion and politics. Jeffrey Haynes has suggested that these often now focus on whether religion is a cause of conflict or a path to the peaceful resolution of conflict. In this paper, I examine Jagjivan Ram’s political life and his belief in the Ravidas¯ ¯ı religious tradition. Through this, I argue that Jagjivan Ram’s career shows how political and religious beliefs led to him favoring a non-confrontational approach to conflict resolution in order to promote Dalit rights. But as a one-off festivity, Durga puja outstrips anything that happens in Bengali life in terms of pomp, glamour, and popularity. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is renowned as the city of mosques, muslin and colorful rickshaws all over the world with its multihued history and rich cultural traditions. The purpose of the study is to describe the leisure & recreational system as well as identify the growing demand in the Dhaka city. The study was based on primary as well as secondary data; applied quantitative method and 200 questionnaires were used. Primary data collected through interview from tourists and local people and secondary data collected from journals, published articles, text books, periodicals, and other materials. Frequency analysis and Multiple Regression analysis is being constructed to analyze different attributes regarding leisure and recreation related perception about Dhaka city. From the study, it is stated that there is a significant relationship between different attributes and overall perception regarding leisure and recreational facilities in Dhaka city. Lack of promotional initiative about leisure and recreational facilities is the major findings from the study followed by Lack of proper and available recreational facilities in Dhaka city. The findings of the research are expected to assist concerned authorities, planners, and marketers to take proper promotional program and ensure availability and quality of necessary leisure and recreational facilities to attract visitors in Dhaka city. Outer suburbs continue to grow but the inner city consisting of the oldest wards is stagnating and even losing population. This trend needs to be studied carefully as its implications are deep and far-reaching. The objective of this article is to focus on what is happening to the internal structure of the city post liberalization by highlighting the changing dynamics of inner-city and outer-city neighbourhoods in Kolkata. The second section provides a brief background to the metropolitan region of Kolkata and the city’s role within this region. Based on ward-level census data for the last 20 years, broad demographic changes under- gone by the city of Kolkata are examined in the third section. The drivers of growth and decline and their implications for livability are discussed in the fourth section. In the fifth section, field observations based on a few representative wards are presented.
