LOUISE KIRKBY LUNN [C] 3044 VOCAL 78 rpm DISCS EDWARD LLOYD [t]. London, 1845-Worthing, 1927. Lloyd was the major British concert and oratorio tenor of the last quarter of the 19th century. He began as a chorister at Westminster Abbey and was subsequently engaged for St. Andrews and then the Chapel Royal. His solo career began in 1871, singing the tenor solo in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion at the Gloucester Festival. He received much acclaim through his singing of this work, as well as in oratorios of Händel, Mendelssohn, and other com- posers, notably Elgar. He was a particular favorite of Elgar and created the tenor solos in that composer’s Caractacus (1898) and The Dream of Gerontius (the year of his farewell, 1900). While he was no longer EDWARD LLOYD, pianist Mme. Adami and unidentified cellist heard regularly on the stage, Lloyd made a recording, circa 1907 number of records for the Gramophone Company in London, 1902 to 1911. Lloyd’s American debut was at the Cincinnati May Festival in 1888. His colleague, baritone Charles Santley, described him physically as “a nice, plump little gentleman”. The New York Times gave a more thorough description on his arrival in 1888. He “looks and acts about as much like a good-natured New York business man as anybody else. He is of medium height, stocky in build, and rather florid of face. He has pleasant dark eyes and dark hair that is just tinged with gray and is brushed down very smooth. A neat mustache is the only hair he wears on his face. He is extremely pleasant in his manner”. 2106. 12” Blk. SR HMV D.821 [1008c/892f]. From 1912-15 he was with the Vienna Volksoper, 1915-17 with the Darmstadt Hoftheater and from 1918 with the Berlin Staatsoper. He also sang with various other houses as a guest, including the Vienna Staatsoper. On July 23, 1921, the NY Times announced that Gatti-Casazza had secured Mann for the Metropolitan, but he died a few weeks later of a heart attack on stage at the Berlin Opera while appearing as Rhadames in Aida.

VOCAL 78 rpm Discs FRANZ (FRANTISEK) PÁCAL [t]. Leitomischi, Austria, 1865-Nepomuk, Czechoslo- vakia, 1938. First an orchestral violinist, Pácal then studied voice with Gustav Walter in Vienna and sang as a chorister in Cologne, Bremen and Graz. In 1895 he became a member of the Vienna Hofoper and had a great success there in 1897 singing the small role of the Fisherman in Rossini’s William Tell. He then was promoted to leading roles and remained in Vienna through 1905. Unfor- tunately he and the Opera’s director, Gustav Mahler, didn’t get along, despite Pacal having instructed his son to kiss Mahler’s hand in public (behavior Mahler considered obsequious). Pacal stated that Mahler ruined his career, calling him “talentless” and “humiliating me in front of all the Opera personnel.” We don’t know what happened to invoke Mahler’s wrath but we do know that Pácal sent Mahler a letter in 1906, unsuccessfully begging for another chance. Leaving Vienna, Pácal then sang with the Prague National Opera, in Riga and finally in Posen. His rare records demonstate a fine voice with considerable ring in the upper register. -Internet sources 1858. 10” Blk. Wien G&T 43832 [891x-Do-2z]. FRÜHLINGSZEIT (Becker). In 1895 he appeared at La Scala in the premieres of Mascagni’s Guglielmo Ratcliff and Silvano. Other engagements at La Scala followed, as well as at the Rome Costanzi, 1903 (with Caruso in Aida) and other prominent Italian houses.

  • Toscanini IV – La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera
Toscanini IV – La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera Trying to find a balance between what the verbal descriptions of Toscanini’s conducting during the period of roughly 1895-1915 say of him and what he actually did can be like trying to capture lightning in a bottle. Since he made no recordings before December 1920, and instrumental recordings at that, we cannot say with any real certainty what his conducting style was like during those years. We do know, from the complaints of Tito Ricordi, some of which reached Giuseppe Verdi’s ears, that Italian audiences hated much of what Toscanini was doing: conducting operas at the written tempos, not allowing most unwritten high notes (but not all, at least not then), refusing to encore well-loved arias and ensembles, and insisting in silence as long as the music was being played and sung. In short, he instituted the kind of audience decorum we come to expect today, although of course even now (particularly in Italy and America, not so much in England) we still have audiences interrupting the flow of an opera to inject their bravos and bravas when they should just let well enough alone. Ricordi complained to Verdi that Toscanini was ruining his operas, which led Verdi to ask Arrigo Boïto, whom he trusted, for an assessment. Boïto, as a friend and champion of the conductor, told Verdi that he was simply conducting the operas pretty much as he wrote them and not allowing excess high notes, repeats or breaks in the action. Verdi was pleased to hear this; it is well known that he detested slowly-paced performances of his operas and, worse yet, the interpolated high notes he did not write.

  • Boston Symphony Orchestra Concert Programs, Season 31
CONVENTION HALL . ROCHESTER Thirty-first Season, 1911-1912 MAX FIEDLER, Conductor Programme WITH HISTORICAL AND DESCRIP- TIVE NOTES BY PHILIP HALE MONDAY EVENING, JANUARY 29 AT 8.15 COPYRIGHT, 1911, BY C. A. ELLIS PUBLISHED BY C. A. ELLIS, MANAGER : : Vladimir De Pachmann The Greatest Pianist Of the 20th Century ON TOUR IN THE UNITED STATES SEASON: 1911-1912 For generations the appearance of new stars on the musical firmament has been announced — then they came with a temporary glitter — soon to fade and to be forgotten. De Pachmann has outlived them all. With each return he won additional resplendence and to-day he is acknowl- edged by the truly artistic public to be the greatest exponent of the piano of the twentieth century. As Arthur Symons, the eminent British critic, says "Pachmann is the Verlaine or Whistler of the Pianoforte the greatest player of the piano now living." Pachmann, as before, uses the BALDWIN PIANO for the expression of his magic art, the instrument of which he himself says " .... It cries when I feel like crying, it sings joyfully when I feel like singing. It responds — like a human being — to every mood. I love the Baldwin Piano." Every lover of the highest type of piano music will, of course, go to hear Pachmann — to revel in the beauty of his music and to marvel at it. It is the beautiful tone quality, the voice which is music itself, and the wonderfully responsive action of the Baldwin Piano, by which Pachmann's miraculous hands reveal to you the thrill, the terror and the ecstasy of a beauty which you had never dreamed was hidden in sounds.
