Epiphanius ALMACARY
In the Coptic Church, after reciting the psalms of the morning prayer and the opening of the gospel of John (1: 1-17),1 or that of the gospel of Mark (accord- ing to other manuscripts),2 the Morning Adam Doxologies follow, called in According to the printed psalmodias of the Coptic .ذكصولوجيات باكر آدام Arabic Church,3 the Morning Adam Doxologies contain nine units. Almost all printed psalmodias restrict them to the following nine ones:
Ⲁ. ⲧⲉⲛⲟⲩⲱϣⲧ ⲙⲫⲓⲱⲧ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲡϣⲏⲣⲓ We worship the Father and the Son Ⲃ. ⲡⲓⲟⲩⲱⲓⲛⲓ ⲛⲧⲁⲫⲙⲏⲓ O true Light Ⲅ. ⲛⲑⲟ ⲑⲙⲁⲩ ⲙⲡⲓⲟⲩⲱⲓⲛⲓ You are the mother of Light Ⲇ. ⲁⲡⲓⲥⲑⲟⲓⲛⲟⲩϥⲓ The select incense Ⲉ. ϩⲁⲛⲁⲛϣⲟ ⲛϣⲟ Thousands of thousands Ⲋ. ⲛⲉⲛⲓⲟϯ ⲛⲁⲡⲟⲥⲧⲟⲗⲟⲥ Our fathers the apostles Ⲍ. ϩⲁⲛⲭⲗⲟⲙ ⲛⲁⲧⲗⲱⲙ Unfading crowns Ⲏ. ⲛⲏⲈⲐⲨ ⲛⲧⲁⲕ Your saints Ⲑ. ⲭⲉⲣⲉ ⲏⲗⲓⲁⲥ Hail Elijah
(The second one is not a doxology, but a Psali Adam according to some manuscripts,4 and is attributed by Abu’l-Barakat to the patriarch of Alexandria Benjamin the first [AD 622-661], and it is Greek in origin, according to Le Codex Sinaïtique grec 8635).

We know that in the contemporary Coptic rite there are two types of tunes, Air Batos chanted in 4 days of the week (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday) and Air Adam chanted in Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. According to the 16th chapter of the book of Misbâh az-Zulmah (Lampa tenebrarum), by Abu’l-Barakat Ibn Kabar (†1324), the celebrants chant the Psali Adam (the second unit) in the Adam days, followed by the doxologies Adam.6 But in Batos days they chant the first unit (ⲧⲉⲛⲟⲩⲱϣⲧ ⲙⲫⲓⲱⲧ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲡϣⲏⲣⲓ) then the Psali Adam only; and after the Psali and Theotokia of the day, they chant another group of Batos doxologies. And perhaps this was the tradition of the church of Al-Moalaka in Old Cairo in the 14th century.7 We notice that the printed Psalmodias include dozens of Batos doxologies, but only those Adam doxologies included in the Morning Adam Doxologies (in addition to a doxology Adam to St Demiana). However, there are differences between this published text and some of the extant mss. Here is a description of two manuscripts in the library of St Macarius’ Monastery: 1. M1: Ms. Lit 101, (serial no. 145),8 copied on 1610 AM (1894 AD), 2. M2: Ms. Lit 107 (serial no. 151),9 copied in the eighteenth century, with this colophon (folio 131v-130r): “this psalmodia was in the land of Abyssinia, in the cell of the metropolitan … and it is from the monastery of great saint Abou Makar (Saint Macarius)” …, وهدا الابصلموديه كانت بارض الحبش في قلايت المطران ... من دير ابينا القديس العظيم ابو مقار...
In both mss. we find two additional doxologies, one doxology for the holy Virgin Mary (ⲭⲉⲣⲉ ⲛⲉ ⲙⲁⲣⲓⲁ), and the second one for St Macarius the Great (ⲁϥϭⲓⲥⲓ ⲛϫⲉ ⲡⲉⲕⲧⲁⲡ). We can compare these two mss. with the printed psalmodies in the following table:
Title Printed M1 M2 Ⲁ. ⲧⲉⲛⲟⲩⲱϣⲧ ⲙⲫⲓⲱⲧ ⲛⲉⲙ ⲡϣⲏⲣⲓ +++ Ⲃ. ⲡⲓⲟⲩⲱⲓⲛⲓ ⲛⲧⲁⲫⲙⲏⲓ +++ Ⲅ. ⲛⲑⲟ ⲑⲙⲁⲩ ⲙⲡⲓⲟⲩⲱⲓⲛⲓ +++ 1. ⲭⲉⲣⲉ ⲛⲉ ⲙⲁⲣⲓⲁ ++ Ⲇ. ⲁⲡⲓⲥⲑⲟⲓⲛⲟⲩϥⲓ +++
6 It seems that the doxology of the apostles was different than the one chanted today, and its beginning was ⲁⲛⲓⲁⲡⲟⲥⲧⲟⲗⲟⲥ. 7 The manuscript of Misbâh az-Zulmah (Lampa tenebrarum), by Abu’l-Barakat Ibn Kabar, preserved in Samanoud, in Lower Egypt (see the photos). 8 U. If for example we compare these mss. with others from the Monastery of the Holy Virgin in Baiad (Deir Al-Adra Baiad in Beni Sweif, Middle Egypt), we would discover additional units (unpublished catalogue): 1. B1: In Ms. Lit 53, dated 1507 AM, folio 315, there is a doxology to the holy twelve apostles (ⲡⲓⲓⲃ ⲁϥⲥⲱⲧⲡⲟⲩ ⲛϫⲉ ⲡⲉⲛⲥⲱⲧⲏⲣ)10 instead of the traditional one to the apostles (ⲛⲉⲛⲓⲟϯ ⲛⲁⲡⲟⲥⲧⲟⲗⲟⲥ). 2. B2: In Ms. Lit 54, dated 1603 AM, folio 124 there is a doxology to St Antony the Great (ⲁⲡⲉⲕⲣⲁⲛ ⲉⲧⲥⲙⲁⲣⲱⲟⲩⲧ)11 followed by a doxology to St Paul the first Hermit (ⲛⲑⲟⲕ ⲟⲩⲙⲁⲕⲁⲣⲓⲟⲥ ⲡⲉⲛⲓⲱⲧ ⲁⲃⲃⲁ ⲡⲁⲩⲗⲏ).12 3. B3: The same thing occurs in MS Lit 55 where a doxology to St Antony is followed by another to St Paul. The endowment belongs to the monas- tery of St Paul the first hermit, with a signature of bishop Chrystodolos of Jerusalem (in Coptic). 4. B4: Finally, the Ms. Lit 58, dated 1605 AM, is the richest one in these additions, (i) A doxology for the Holy Virgin (ⲭⲉⲣⲉ ⲛⲉ ⲙⲁⲣⲓⲁ),13 (ii) To the twelve apostles (ⲡⲓⲒ⳰Ⲃ ⲁϥⲥⲱⲧⲡⲟⲩ ⲛϫⲉ ⲡⲉⲛⲥⲱⲧⲏⲣ), (iii) To St Athanasius the Great (ⲁⲙⲱⲓⲛⲓ ⲛⲛⲓⲗⲁⲟⲥ ⲛⲓⲭⲣⲓⲥⲧⲓⲁⲛⲟⲥ) and this one is not edited before and not mentioned by dr. Yassa Abd al-Masih,14 (iv) To St Theodore the martyr (ⲑⲱϯ ⲛⲗⲁⲟⲥ ⲙⲫⲟⲟⲩ),15 (v) To St George the martyr (ⲛⲑⲟⲕ ⲛⲓⲙ),16 (vi) To St Kastur (ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ⲛⲓⲙ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ).17

In this ms. there is a different doxology to the Holy Virgin with the same beginning (ⲭⲉⲣⲉ ⲛⲉ ⲙⲁⲣⲓⲁ),18 and one to St Antony the Great (ⲁⲡⲉⲕⲣⲁⲛ ⲉⲧⲥⲙⲁⲣⲱⲟⲩⲧ). 2. C: Ms. Lit 332 in the Coptic Museum (Simaika serial no 265). In this ms. we find also the same doxology to St Antony (ⲁⲡⲉⲕⲣⲁⲛ ⲉⲧⲥⲙⲁⲣⲱⲟⲩⲧ), followed by a doxology to St George, but its beginning is missing.

This doxology is not published before, and not mentioned by dr. Yassa Abd al-Masih in his list of Coptic doxologies.22 This doxology is remarkable for its relatedness to the historical episode of the consecration of St. Macarius’ sanctuary by Benjamin, Patriarch of Alex- andria (AD 622-661) according to Ms. lit 207 (serial no. 251) in the library of St Macarius’ Monastery.23

CONCLUSION
1. We may thus infer that there was some freedom exercised by each church or monastery in introducing doxologies that celebrate their own saint and writing them in their own psalmodias. 2. We may also say that by printing the book of Psalmodia we lost in our daily prayers all the doxologies Adam scattered in our manuscripts except these doxologies included in the Morning Adam Doxologies. 3. We can also notice that all the doxologies chanted in the prayers of raising of incense in the morning and evening are Batos, regardless what day of the week it is, and that the morning doxologies are Adam also no matter what day it is. 4. It is also evident that the doxology of St Macarius is a very ancient one which might date back to the time of consecrating St Benjamin’s sanctuary, or at least to the period when Coptic-speaking monks, who could read and understand Coptic texts and employ them in writing such doxologies, still existed.
