5 Abstract Aeromonas genus bacteria are widely spread in the environment, with special focus on aquatic ecosystems. They are the cause of several infections on animals and are, now more than ever, acknowledged as important human pathogens. Since this bacteria can cause different types of infections/diseases, clinical diagnosis is difficult, just as laboratory identification, making it a rising concern amid the medical community. Such infections include systems such as gastrointestinal, skin and soft tissues, intra-abdominal, respiratory, ocular, urinary tract, meningitis and sepsis. Besides the increasing infection incidence due to this genus, problematic and complex taxonomy and classification, increasing pathogenesis knowledge, undetermined infections prevalence at a global scale and resistance development to different antibiotic classes became motives to why the research on these bacteria is fundamental. As a way to better understand the role of Aeromonas on human infections as well as all controversy surrounding this theme a revision and compilation about this pathogen was performed. Key words: Aeromonas, infections, human, pathogen. 6 Índice Geral 1. Introdução ................................................................................................................ 11 2. However, bacteria of this genus are isolated from many other habitats, environments, and food products. The taxonomy of this genus is complex when phenotypic identification methods are used because such methods might not correctly identify all the species. On the other hand, molecular methods have proven very reliable, such as using the sequences of concatenated housekeeping genes like gyrB and rpoD or comparing the genomes with the type strains using a genomic index, such as the average nucleotide identity (ANI) or in silico DNA–DNA hybridization (isDDH). So far, 36 species have been described in the genus Aeromonas of which at least 19 are considered emerging pathogens to humans, causing a broad spectrum of infections. Having said that, when classifying 1852 strains that have been reported in various recent clinical cases, 95.4% were identified as only four species: Aeromonas caviae (37.26%), Aeromonas dhakensis (23.49%), Aeromonas veronii (21.54%), and Aeromonas hydrophila (13.07%).

Submitted: December 27, 2012; Approved: April 1, 2013. Abstract Investigating the endophytic bacterial community in special moss species is fundamental to under- standing the microbial-plant interactions and discovering the bacteria with stresses tolerance. Thus, the community structure of endophytic bacteria in the xerophilous moss Grimmia montana were esti- mated using a 16S rDNA library and traditional cultivation methods. In total, 212 sequences derived from the 16S rDNA library were used to assess the bacterial diversity. Sequence alignment showed that the endophytes were assigned to 54 genera in 4 phyla (Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria and Cytophaga/Flexibacter/Bacteroids). Of them, the dominant phyla were Proteobacteria (45.9%) and Firmicutes (27.6%), the most abundant genera included Acinetobacter, Aeromonas, Enterobacter, Leclercia, Microvirga, Pseudomonas, Rhizobium, Planococcus, Paenisporosarcina and Planomicrobium. In addition, a total of 14 species belonging to 8 genera in 3 phyla (Proteo- bacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria) were isolated, Curtobacterium, Massilia, Pseudomonas and Sphingomonas were the dominant genera. Although some of the genera isolated were inconsistent with those detected by molecular method, both of two methods proved that many different endophytic bacteria coexist in G. montana. According to the potential functional analyses of these bacteria, some species are known to have possible beneficial effects on hosts, but whether this is the case in G.

How- ever, little is known about the diversity and distribu- tion of endophytic bacteria associated with aquatic plants and their potential to enhance phytoremedia- tion of aquatic environments. In the present study, endophytic bacteria were isolated from 4 species of aquatic plants: Phragmites communis, Potamogeton crispus, Nymphaea tetragona and Najas marina. The isolated bacteria were classified into 12 genera in the Gammaproteobacteria, Bacilli, Alphaproteobacteria, Flavobacteria and Actinobacteria. In addition, differ- ent strains and/or different concentrations of the bac- teria were isolated from different parts of the 4 plants, suggesting the different parts of the 4 plants harbored different endophytic bacteria. • The Protective Role of Endogenous Bacterial Communities in Chironomid Egg Masses and Larvae
The ISME Journal (2013) 7, 2147–2158 & 2013 International Society for Microbial Ecology All rights reserved 1751-7362/13 www.nature.com/ismej ORIGINAL ARTICLE The protective role of endogenous bacterial communities in chironomid egg masses and larvae Yigal Senderovich1 and Malka Halpern1,2 1Department of Evolutionary and Environmental Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Haifa, Mount Carmel, Haifa, Israel and 2Department of Biology and Environment, Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Haifa, Oranim, Tivon, Israel Insects of the family Chironomidae, also known as chironomids, are distributed worldwide in a variety of water habitats. These insects display a wide range of tolerance toward metals and organic pollutions. Bacterial species known for their ability to degrade toxicants were identified from chironomid egg masses, leading to the hypothesis that bacteria may contribute to the survival of chironomids in polluted environments. To gain a better understanding of the bacterial communities that inhabit chironomids, the endogenous bacteria of egg masses and larvae were studied by 454-pyrosequencing. The microbial community of the egg masses was distinct from that of the larval stage, most likely due to the presence of one dominant bacterial Firmicutes taxon, which consisted of 28% of the total sequence reads from the larvae. This taxon may be an insect symbiont. The bacterial communities of both the egg masses and the larvae were found to include operational taxonomic units, which were closely related to species known as toxicant degraders. Furthermore, various bacterial species with the ability to detoxify metals were isolated from egg masses and larvae. Koch-like postulates were applied to demonstrate that chironomid endogenous bacterial species protect the insect from toxic heavy metals.

Since the 1990s, interest has grown in cell-to-cell communication through quorum sensing signals and biofilm formation. As they are interconnected, these two self-organizing systems deserve to be considered together for a fresh perspective on the natural history and lifestyles of aeromonads. In this review, we focus on the multicellular behaviors of Aeromonas, i.e., its social life. First, we review and discuss the available knowledge at the molecular and cellular levels for biofilm and quorum sensing. We then discuss the complex, subtle, and nested interconnections between the two systems. Finally, we focus on the aeromonad multicellular coordinated behaviors involved in heterotrophy and virulence that represent technological opportunities and Edited by: applied research challenges.
