Health and sustainable management of teak stands V.V. Sudheendrakumar Kerala Forest Research Institute Peechi- 680653, Thrissur, Kerala, India Email: [email protected] Abstract Teak ( Tectona grandis L.f.) has been planted in over 36 countries across the tropical and subtropical regions in the Asian, African and American continents as well as many islands in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The insect pests of teak can be broadly classified as defoliators, stem borers and root feeders. Defoliators cause loss in volume increment in plantations as they feed on leaves. The most important defoliators are the lepidopterans namely, Hyblaea puera , Eutectona machaeralis and Paliga damastesalis . The borers belonging to the Lepidoptera include Alcterogystia cadambae , Xyleutes ceramicus and Sahydrassus malabaricus . The root feeders include white grubs belonging to the coleopterans. For most of the above pests data is not available on the economic impact caused except the information on the damage potential. H. puera is the only pest for which economic loss has been assessed based on the work done in Kerala. Accordingly effective biocontrol strategies involving a baculovirus have been developed and field- tested to manage this pest. However, no routine defoliator management is being practiced in any teak growing areas. Disease incidences are common in nurseries and plantations. Major diseases encountered are bacterial collar rot, bacterial wilt, pink disease, Phomopsis leaf spot, Colletotrichum leaf spot, leaf rust, etc. Chemical control is usually adopted for the management of such diseases. (A concise checklist of the species can be found in Table 4, page 120.) Distribution maps are included as well as 18 colour plates covering all but one species. Where no specimens of a particular spe cies from the Philippines were available to us, illustrations are given of specimens from outside the Philippines. In total we have listed 117 species (with 5 additional subspecies where more than one subspecies of a species exists in the Philippines). Four tables are provided: 1) a breakdown of the number of species and endemic species/subspecies for each subfamily, tribe and genus of Philippine Sphingidae; 2) an evaluation of the number of species as well as endemic species/subspecies per island for the nine largest islands of the Philippines plus one small island group for comparison; 3) an evaluation of the Sphingidae endemicity for each of Vane-Wright’s (1990) faunal regions. From these tables it can be readily deduced that the highest species counts can be encountered on the islands of Palawan (73 species), Luzon (72), Mindanao, Leyte and Negros (62 each). -

Beitrag zur Kenntnis der Kleinschmetterlinge (Microlepidoptera) von Štajersko und Koroško in Slowenien Tone LESAR1 & Heinz HABELER2 1 Ciril-Metodova 6, SI-2000 Maribor 2 Auersperggasse 19, A-8010 Graz Zusammenfassung. Für die Regionen Štajersko und Koroško in Slowenien werden alle erreichbar gewesenen Funddaten über die Familiengruppe der sogenannten Kleinschmetterlinge wiedergegeben. Der zeitliche Rahmen der Daten erstreckt sich von Literaturzitaten um 1864 bis zu aktuellen Bestandsaufnahmen von 2005. Es werden 909 Arten behandelt (zusammen mit Synonymen, Unterarten und Formen sind 1064 Taxa angegeben), weitere sieben Arten können nicht zum sicheren Bestand gerechnet werden und sind deshalb nur im Kapitel Kommentare und Diskussion erwähnt. Die 4640 Funddaten stammen von 227 konkret genannten Fundorten, was eine erhebliche geografische Streuung für das cca 6000 km² große Untersuchungsgebiet bedeutet. Schlüsselworte: Styria, Carinthia, Slowenien, Mikrolepidoptera, Funddaten. Izvleček. PRISPEVEK K POZNAVANJU METULJČKOV (MICROLEPIDOPTERA) ŠTAJERSKE IN KOROŠKE V SLOVENIJI. Za Štajersko in Koroško v Sloveniji so navedeni vsi dosegljivi podatki o najdbah takoimenovanih metuljčkih (mikrolepidoptera). Časovni razpon podatkov sega od časa okrog 1864 do 2005. Obravnavano je 909 vrst metuljčkov (skupaj s sinonimi, podvrstami in formami je navedeno 1064 taksonov), nadaljnjih sedem vrst ne moremo šteti kot zanesljivo prisotne in so zato navedene samo v poglavju komentarji in diskusija. 4640 podatkov je z 227 konkretno imenovanih lokacij, kar predstavlja znatno geografsko razpršenost za ca. 6000 km2 veliko obravnavano področje. Review of butterfly, moth and other natural history sightings 2019 January January started dry and settled but mostly cloudy with high pressure dominant, and it remained generally dry and often mild during the first half of the month. The second half became markedly cooler with overnight frosts and the last week saw a little precipitation, some which was occasionally wintry. With the mild weather continuing from December 2018 there were a small number of migrant moths noted in January, comprising a Dark Sword-grass at Seabrook on the 5th, a Silver Y there on the 13th and 2 Plutella xylostella (Diamond-back Moths) there on the 15th, whilst a very unseasonal Dark Arches at Hythe on the 4th may have been of immigrant origin. Dark Sword-grass at Seabrook (Paul Howe) Dark Arches at Hythe (Ian Roberts) More typical species involved Epiphyas postvittana (Light Brown Apple Moth), Satellite, Mottled Umber, Winter Moth, Chestnut, Spring Usher and Early Moth. Early Moth at Seabrook (Paul Howe) Spring Usher at Seabrook (Paul Howe) The only butterfly noted was a Red Admiral at Nickolls Quarry on the 1st but the mild weather encouraged single Buff-tailed Bumblebees to appear at Seabrook on the 7th and Mill Point on the 8th, whilst a Minotaur Beetle was attracted to light at Seabrook on the 6th. A Common Seal and two Grey Seals were noted regularly off Folkestone, whilst at Hare was seen near Botolph’s Bridge on the 1st and a Mink was noted there on the 17th. February After a cold start to the month it was generally mild from the 5th onwards. -

Abstract Additions, deletions and corrections are made to the Irish checklist of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera). Elachista biatomella (Stainton, 1848) is added to the Irish list. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe. -
