Caldasia 43(1):49–64. doi: https://dx.doi.org/10.15446/caldasia.v43n1.84230. • Online Publishing: 9/Nov/2020 ABSTRACT This article describes the diversity and use of trees and shrubs in smallholder farming systems in three municipalities of the department of Boyacá in the Colombian Andes, and tests the relations between spe- cies richness, use, and a set of socio-economic and structural variables. We conducted ethnobotanical walks and semi-structured interviews on 24 farms to characterize all tree and shrub species. In total, we recorded 142 species with a predominance of natives (88) versus exotics (54). Species richness ranged between four and 40 (X = 25.17; SD = 10.13) per farm and was homogeneous among the municipalities (P > 0.05, Kruskal-Wallis test). We recorded 52 wild species, eight of them endemic, all representative of the surrounding native flora, of which 23 % had some type of use. Cultivated species were mostly represented by exotics that had been planted primarily as live fences, ornamentals, or edibles. -

ABSTRACT During past several years, there has been growing interest among the usage of various medicinal plants from traditional system of medicine for the treatment of different ailments. A number of herbs belonging to the specie Abutilon are noted for their medicinal benefits in traditional system of medicine. A lot of medicinally important attributes have been assigned to the plants of this specie. The important plants of this specie which have been so far explored include A. indicum, A. theophrashti, A. grandiflorum and A. muticum etc. Also, large number of reports on Abutilon spp. indicates continuous scientific research on it with special reference to their medicinal cultivation and biotechnological applications. In light of this, the present review aims at exploring current scientific findings on the various plants of this specie. Various plants of Abutilon species are traditionally claimed for their varied pharmacological and medicinal activities. Furthermore, different plant parts contain specific phytoconstituent responsible for their biological activity. -

En total, esta familia cuenta con 18 especies en el área de estudio; estas se incluyen en diez géneros que, a su vez, forman parte de cinco de las nueve subfamilias que actualmente integran las Malváceas. Se ha llevado a cabo una campaña de recolección por diversos enclaves de la ciudad, prestando especial atención a parques y jardines públicos. Simultáneamente a esa campaña, se ha buscado bibliografía para tener una idea de partida sobre qué especies de Malváceas han sido citadas alguna vez por la flora urbana de Sevilla. El material recolectado, depositado en el Herbario del Departamento de Botánica Vegetal y Ecología de la Universidad de Sevilla (SEV), ha sido la base para el desarrollo de esta revisión; a partir de él se ha elaborado una descripción original para cada especie y se han seleccionado los caracteres diagnósticos que han servido para construir claves dicotómicas de géneros y especies. -

Herbs, shrubs, or trees, often stellate-pubescent; stems erect or procumbent, sometimes repent. Leaves alternate, stipulate, ovate or lanceolate (less often elliptic or orbicular), sometimes lobed or dissected, with hairs that may be stellate or simple, sometimes prickly, sometimes glandular, or rarely lepidote. Flowers solitary or fasciculate in the leaf axils or aggregated into inflorescences (usually racemes or panicles, less commonly spikes, scorpioid cymes, umbels, or heads); involucel present or absent; calyx pentamerous, more or less gamosepalous; petals 5, distinct, adnate to staminal column at base; androecium monadelphous; anthers reniform, numerous (rarely only 5); pollen spheroidal, echinate; gynoecium superior, 3-40-carpelled; styles 1-40; stigmas truncate, capitate, or decurrent. Fruits schizocarpic or capsular, sometimes a berry; seeds reniform or turbinate, pubescent or glabrous, rarely arillate.
