• Kiev 1941: Hitler's Battle for Supremacy in the East
Kiev 1941 In just four weeks in the summer of 1941 the German Wehrmacht wrought unprecedented destruction on four Soviet armies, conquering central Ukraine and killing or capturing three-quarters of a million men. This was the battle of Kiev – one of the largest and most decisive battles of World War II and, for Hitler and Stalin, a battle of crucial importance. For the first time, David Stahel charts the battle’s dramatic course and after- math, uncovering the irreplaceable losses suffered by Germany’s ‘panzer groups’ despite their battlefield gains, and the implications of these losses for the German war effort. He illuminates the inner workings of the German army as well as the experiences of ordinary soldiers, showing that with the Russian winter looming and Soviet resistance still unbroken, victory came at huge cost and confirmed the turning point in Germany’s war in the east. David Stahel is an independent researcher based in Berlin. His previous publications include Operation Barbarossa and Germany’s Defeat in the East (Cambridge, 2009). Second Chance (A Novel of Time Travel) Christopher G. Nuttall Text © 2012 Christopher G. Nuttall, CC BY-NC-ND Cover CC0 by Free Ebook Foundation using a Public Domain Image from NYPL Cover Blurb “Why? We’re not at war with Germany.” “With all due respect, sir, Nazi Germany is at war with us.” After a night of terror, Britain wakes up to discover that the entire nation has been thrown back in time, to 1940…and the Germans are at the door. As they struggle to react to the new environment, it occurs to some people that there is an opportunity here – to reverse the verdict of history and create a world where Britain is the only superpower. Forced into a war they won once before, the British struggle to understand what has happened, as the ripples of the sudden change in the future spread across the world. Under threat from Hitler, Mussolini, Japan…and a surprise member of the Axis of Evil, can Britain survive long enough to reshape the world? Author’s Note Due to the difficulties of predicting the exact capabilities of the UK’s defence establishment from day to day, following a whole series of unwise political decisions, this book attempts to give the British armed forces a balanced capability, between the optimistic and the pessimistic possibilities. Certain future projects, the Eurofighter and the Type-45 destroyer, have been included, others, the future carrier, haven’t been included as their capabilities are unknown at this time. My apologies for any confusion. CGN Chapter One: Transition Chapter One Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ) London, UK 6th July 1940 It all happened very suddenly at midnight; one moment everything was normal, the next all of the satellite communications had cut off.

A: My name? First and last name? Q: Yes, first and last name. A: My name is Rochus, first name, Misch Q: And when were you born? A: I was born in July 1917, in the middle of the war. Q: What day in July? A: On 29 July 1917. Q: And where? A. In Altschalkendorf…known then as Altschalkowitz; that is in the vicinity of Oppeln. Q: Were your parents from there or somewhere else? A: No. My parents…my father had been seriously wounded during the war and he was in a local hospital in Oppeln. And he was given a furlough from there for a few days which my mother had not expected…she was at the end of her pregnancy. And that was on the 24th. And on the 26th he suffered a hemorrhage…and my father died. In the village there was no doctor and naturally that was a very difficult time for my mother, you know. And on the third day the men came in order to….in order to fetch the coffin with my dead father. And my mother had seen that, from the window when they carried him on their shoulders, my father and that caused her to scream terribly.

  • Colour Brochure 2011 1St Edition.Qxd
AAFFTTEERR TTHHEE BBAATTTTLLEE NEW TITLE PUBLISHED JUNE 2019 In 2012 Jean Paul Pallud wrote the After the Battle account of the Desert War; now he completes the story with detailed coverage of JEAN PAUL PALLUD the landings of Operation ‘Torch’ in North-West Africa in November 1942. When the western Allies decided to launch a second front in North Africa, they carefully considered the anti-British feeling left in France by the ill-advised attack by the Royal Navy on the French Fleet at Mers el Kébir in July 1940. Consequently, the operation was given an American rather than a British complexion, General Eisenhower was chosen to lead a mostly American force into battle and the major Royal Navy contribution was kept as inconspicuous as possible. At this point in the war, the Allies had almost no experience with amphibious operations and it was a risky undertaking to carry out such an immense operation covering multiple landings over 600 miles apart. Even more amazing was the fact that part of the invasion forces was to depart from the United States, 6,000 miles away. As the orders were not confirmed until a month before Operation ‘Torch’ was launched, there was very little time to organise such a logistically complex operation involving American and British forces, and even less time for the pro-Allied French to organise more than small measures of support. There were two landings in the Mediterranean, at three main points near Algiers and three near Oran, and three landings on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. There, the main landing came ashore at Fédala, 18 miles north-east of Casablanca, and the armour was brought ashore at Safi, 140 miles south-east.
