Each Seminar elects its own officers, plans its own program and selects its own Members from Columbia, Associate Members from elsewhere, and any speakers or other guests it invites to its sessions. About half the Semi- Faculty House, 1923 nars admit selected graduate students as guests. Seminar participants and speakers attend by invitation and nei- ther pay nor are paid, although a central office supports travel and hotel expenses for speakers when its endowment income permits. As independent entities, the Seminars can take intellectual risks the University might not otherwise assume. They provide something every great institution needs: a small area where activities are fast, cheap, and out of control. Columbia is one of the few universities, or businesses, with the courage to institutionalize such independence. The Seminars link Columbia with the intellectual resources of the surrounding communities. This outreach also offers to both worlds the fruits of interaction and mutual criticism, as well as the advantages of close contacts: a place to network, establish ties, exchange scholarly or professional news, or explore either side of the job market. For the benefit of a broader audience, the Seminars make the minutes of most past meetings available to users of the Columbia Library. Each Seminar has a web page, but decides for itself how to use it. (To encourage candor in discussion of controversial issues, Seminars may exercise discretion over the contents and distribution of their minutes.) The Seminars subsidize the publication of certain books written under their auspices, and arrange conferences to make public their discoveries or to work quietly with scholars too distant to be regular Seminar participants. Some Seminars are tight, restricted discussion groups that study unfashionable problems; others are broad-based lecture se- ries where eminent visitors disseminate the latest knowledge. Frank Tannenbaum, the founder of the University Seminars, believed that uniformity would destroy them. Scholars and others interested in attending a seminar should email their credentials to the appropriate chair. Seminars are listed by Seminar number, which reflects the order in which they were founded, with some exceptions. Butler liked the idea as a quick way to mobilize the intellectual re- sources of the University about suddenly emerging problems, but World War II su- pervened and it was 1944 before his suc- cessor, Frank Fackenthal, approved the first five University Seminars. Three of these Seminars still meet: Peace, Religion, and The Renaissance. The Seminars have continued to serve Butler’s purpose, but they have also be- come an intrinsic part of the enterprise Columbia does better than any great uni- versity in the world, the ongoing education of its own faculty. Most of this education takes place within the academic departments, but Tan- Frank Tannenbaum 1893–1969; historian of Latin America; nenbaum was continuing a tradition of Slavery; and Prison Systems. Professor Tannenbaum was a General Education in a Core Curriculum founder and the first director of the University Seminars. that Columbia had been developing for thirty years. The Contemporary Civilization and the Humanities courses are famous for the breadth they give Columbia undergradu- ates, and astonishingly unrecognized as a bootcamp where econo- metricians acquire sophistication by conducting rough and tumble discussions of Plato. This tradition positioned Columbia professors to invent the in- terdisciplinary regional institutes that trained graduate students to handle post-war complexities beyond their departments, but also forced political scientists, economists, and literary scholars to learn from each other. Over the past two thirds of a century, the Seminars have offered more and more specialists from Columbia and else- where the chance to learn and discover things together. When Tannenbaum died in 1969, there were fifty Seminars. Tannenbaum wrote a charter to “protect the sponta- neity of the Seminars from an unstructured situation [in which] interference is inevitable, because the desire for general rules and uniformity is irresistible.” The Director of the Seminars was to be appointed by the President of the University but selected and in- structed

Interest in the material and visual culture of China has influenced the development of American national identity and shaped perceptions of America’s place in the world since the colonial era. Turn-of-the-century anxieties about U.S.-China relations and geopolitics in the Pacific Ocean sparked new approaches to the collecting and study of Chinese art in the U.S. Proponents including Charles Freer, Langdon Warner, Frederick McCormick, and others championed the production of knowledge about Chinese art in the U.S. as a deterrent for a looming “civilizational clash.” Central to this flurry of activity were questions of epistemology and authority: among these approaches, whose conceptions and interpretations would prevail, and on what grounds? American collectors, dealers, and curators grappled with these questions by engaging not only with each other—oftentimes contentiously—but also with their counterparts in Europe, China, and Japan. Together they developed and debated transnational forms of expertise within museums, world’s fairs, commercial galleries, print publications, and educational institutes.

TOM GRUNFELD The Advantages and Perils of Globalization: The Case of Tibet INTRODUCTION A 2001 study conducted by Leiden University and the Washington DC-based Institute for International Mediation and Confl ict Resolution identifi ed 126 high- intensity confl icts (defi ned as large-scale armed confl icts causing more than 1000 deaths) from mid-1999 to mid-2000, 78 low intensity confl icts (100–1000 deaths) and 178 violent political confl icts (less than 100 deaths) (Bob 2002). Yet, ex- cept for – at best – a fl eeting newspaper account, only a handful ever caught the world’s attention. Historically an astonishing small number of insurgencies gained much noto- riety and, even less, ultimately succeeded. Most were largely forgotten by all but the most diligent scholars and, of course, the participants and victims. This lack of attention raises two interesting questions: why do some groups manage to gain international sympathy, publicity, access to opinion makers and politicians, and funding when so many others remain relatively obscure regard- less of the righteousness of their causes and does international recognition help these groups achieve their goals? Why was the struggle for East Timorese independence, to take but one obvi- ous example, so well known and documented when similar undertakings in other parts of Indonesia (Aceh, the Moluccas and Irian Jaya come quickly to mind) re- main largely invisible to the world community? Who succeeds in this “[…] harsh, Darwinian marketplace where legions of desperate groups vie for scare attention, sympathy and money?” (Bob 2001:321) Undoubtedly, the single most important element in the globalization of con- fl icts has been technology.

Moreover, the cultural exchanges which took place across this landmass, the transport of ideas as well as goods, and the "timelessness" as well as the contemporary relevance, all make the task even more difficult to categorize. A person can enter a bazaar, which is "centerless," from many directions and wander through, exiting from a totally different door. Kolb (National Endowment for the Humanities)Published on H-Russia (April, 2000) Tournament or Great Game: The Struggle for the Mastery of CentralAsia [Disclaimer: The opinions expressed herein are those of the reviewer and not of his employer or any other federal agency.] "The Great Game," the geopolitical contest between Tsarist Russia and Victorian Britain for the control of Central Asia, is well known to scholars of Asian history and culture. Lieutenant Arthur Conolly (1807-1842) of the 6th Bengal Native Light Cavalry, who initiated British reconnaissance and mapmaking in the region, published a popular version of his exploits in 1834 in which he coined the term.[1] In 1837, Count Karl Vasilyevich Nesselrode, the Tsar's Foreign Minister from 1822 to 1856, created another descriptive term for this conflict, "Tournament of Shadows." Husband and wife authors Meyer and Brysac begin this latest synthesis of the "Game/Tournament" around 1810 and carry it through into the post-World War II period. While on vacation to the Indian Subcontinent they visited the Khyber Pass in December 1990, not long after the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan but before the now decade-old civil-sectarian-ethnic war in that country.

The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof are all considered classics of modern theater. However, in his early years, Williams concentrated his liter- ary talents just as intently on poetry as on plays. He met William Jay Smith as both were embarking on careers as writers. Smith and Williams remained close friends through Williams’s learning period, both of them affected and shaped by their youth in Louisiana and Mississippi. My Friend Tom is at once Smith’s critical analysis of Williams’s early work in poetry and drama, a brief biography of Williams during his development stages as a writer, and a moving meditation on his friend’s career, from Wil- liams’s early failures and ambiguities to fame and notoriety. He provides in-depth looks at the inception, development, and commercial and critical reception of such early efforts as Candles to the Sun, Fugitive Kind, and Battle of Angels. Using his own correspondence with Williams, contemporary newspaper accounts, and back issues of long-dissolved literary journals, Smith recreates Williams’s youthful efforts and traces, wistfully and adroitly, his own rough passage into the world of letters.
