Since the 1960s, several gifted Korean composers, including perhaps most notably Young Jo Lee (b. 1943), have been internationally acclaimed for their work. In Western countries, however, there has been a scarcity of academic studies examining the artistry of the music of these Korean composers. Nonetheless, as one of today’s most recognized composers in Korea, Young Jo Lee has been invited to numerous international concerts, conferences, and festivals where his works have been played and discussed. A salient feature of his compositions is the fusion of Korean traditional music and the elements of Western compositions, such as in, for one distinctive example, his piano composition, Piano Honza Nori. This musical study describes and analyzes how Lee integrates Korean traditional elements with Western musical ideas in Piano Honza Nori. Results of this study will contribute to the limited literature on the analysis of contemporary piano composition that integrates Korean traditional elements. -

The Musical Kinetic Shape: a Variable Tension String Instrument
The Musical Kinetic Shape: AVariableTensionStringInstrument Ismet Handˇzi´c, Kyle B. Reed University of South Florida, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tampa, Florida Abstract In this article we present a novel variable tension string instrument which relies on a kinetic shape to actively alter the tension of a fixed length taut string. We derived a mathematical model that relates the two-dimensional kinetic shape equation to the string’s physical and dynamic parameters. With this model we designed and constructed an automated instrument that is able to play frequencies within predicted and recognizable frequencies. This prototype instrument is also able to play programmed melodies. Keywords: musical instrument, variable tension, kinetic shape, string vibration 1. Introduction It is possible to vary the fundamental natural oscillation frequency of a taut and uniform string by either changing the string’s length, linear density, or tension. Most string musical instruments produce di↵erent tones by either altering string length (fretting) or playing preset and di↵erent string gages and string tensions. Although tension can be used to adjust the frequency of a string, it is typically only used in this way for fine tuning the preset tension needed to generate a specific note frequency. About the Artists
About the Artists Seo Hye Han, ballet Seo Hye Han joined Boston Ballet as a company dancer in 2012, after dancing with the Universal Ballet Company as a soloist for three seasons. She began her studies at the Korean National University of Arts and graduated in 2009. Han performed in the World Ballet Star Festival in Korea with Daniil Simkin and the Havana Ballet Festival in Cuba. She had roles in performances of Don Quixote (Kitri), La Bayadère (Gamzatti), Onegin (Olga), The Nutcracker (Clara), Swan Lake (Odette, Odile), Simchung (Simchung), and Kiří Kylían’s Sechs Tänze. Her repertoire with Boston Ballet includes George Ballanchine’s Jewels, Coppélia, Serenade, Symphony in Three Movements, Theme and Variation, and Kammermusik No. 2; John Cranko’s Onegin, Jorma Elo’s Bach Cello Suites, William Forsythe’s The Virtiginous Thrill of Exactitude, Jose Martinez’s Resonance, Wayne McGregor’s Chroma, and Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. Han has received honors and awards in many international dance competitions including the silver medal in 2004 at Bulgaria’s Varna International Ballet Competition, a scholarship to Vaganova Ballet Academy in the 2005 Prix de Lausanne, a silver medal in the 2008 Varna International Ballet Competition, the Joffrey Prize in the 2010 USA International Ballet Competition, and the Gold Medal in the 2012 Boston International Ballet Competition. Han joined Boston Ballet in 2012 as a soloist and was promoted to principal dancer in 2016. Situations Vol. 5 (Winter 2011) © 2011 by Yonsei University Sunghee Pak (Yonsei University) In Tune with the Ear of the Public Kayagŭm and the Status of Traditional Korean Music in the Twenty-First Century in Korea Every Thursday, I visit Gahwae-dong (Kahoe-dong) in central Seoul, a locale with many traditional Korean houses, to take my weekly kayagŭm lesson. Kayagŭm is a traditional Korean musical instrument with twelve silk strings, which dates back to A.D. 551 (Hwang, Chimhyang-moo 9). It has been several years since I first started learning it, but before I took my first lesson, I had never seen a kayaŭm, apart from a few pictures in the music text book in middle school. Many people in Korea nowadays are not familiar with their traditional musical instruments. Though kayagŭm and kŏmun’go play the most important role in any Korean ensemble, as equivalents of the violin in Western classical orchestra, not many people have seen them up close. During the 1980s and 1990s, Korean classical music experienced a revival, and there have been several attempts to inform the public about this. These attempts achieved some fruit but there are still more to be done in promoting the essence of traditional Korean music. Until the 1990s, traditional Korean music—kugak, in Korean—conveyed an image of something old, decayed, and outdated. People vaguely knew that the tradition was worth keeping, but whereas Western piano or violin were thought to be elegant, and Western pop music such as the Beatles was treated as a symbol of youth and freedom, kugak, was very far from being considered chic. -

Namdo Japga medley Namdo is a province in the southwest part of Korea, and Japga refers to the folk songs performed by trained professional singers. This musical style is influenced by other folk music genres in Ko- rea such as pansori and gasa. Namdo Japga is based on the Sinawi mode (also known as Yujkabegi mode). ABOUT THE ARTISTS Beall Concert Hall Sunday afternoon 3:00 p.m. May 2, 2010 Yusun Kim is a leading gayageum (plucked zither) performer in Korea. She was born in Seoul, South Korea, in 1980. She began her formal education at Gaywon High School of the Arts and con- tinued studying at Ewha Woman’s University where she received BA and MA degrees in gayageum performance, and is currently WORLD MUSIC SERIES pursuing her doctorate there. She has performed at many music presents venues and festivals in Korea, including the Korean Composers’ Association’s Seoul Composition Festival and the Korean Compos- ers’ Union’s National New Music Exposition, among many others. MUSIC OF KOREA She has also appeared at international concert venues in the U.S., Poland, France, China, Hong Kong, and Japan as a gayageum and a featuring guest artists janggu (drum) artist. She won the Grand Prize in the 2002 Korean Young Performance Arts Competition and the 2004 National Tradi- Yusun Kim, gayageum tional Competition.
