Exploring Aspects of Korean Traditional Music in Young Jo Lee's
EXPLORING ASPECTS OF KOREAN TRADITIONAL MUSIC IN YOUNG JO LEE’S PIANO HONZA NORI Jin Kim, B.M., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2013 APPROVED: Adam Wodnicki, Major Professor Elvia Puccinelli, Committee Member Joseph Banowetz, Committee Member Steven Harlos, Chair of the Division of Keyboard Studies John Murphy, Interim Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music James C. Scott, Dean of the College of Music Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Kim, Jin. Exploring Aspects of Korean Traditional Music in Young Jo Lee’s Piano Honza Nori. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2013, 29 pp., 4 tables, 9 figures, 13 musical examples, bibliography, 32 titles. Since the 1960s, several gifted Korean composers, including perhaps most notably Young Jo Lee (b. 1943), have been internationally acclaimed for their work. In Western countries, however, there has been a scarcity of academic studies examining the artistry of the music of these Korean composers. Nonetheless, as one of today’s most recognized composers in Korea, Young Jo Lee has been invited to numerous international concerts, conferences, and festivals where his works have been played and discussed. A salient feature of his compositions is the fusion of Korean traditional music and the elements of Western compositions, such as in, for one distinctive example, his piano composition, Piano Honza Nori. This musical study describes and analyzes how Lee integrates Korean traditional elements with Western musical ideas in Piano Honza Nori. Results of this study will contribute to the limited literature on the analysis of contemporary piano composition that integrates Korean traditional elements. -
SOAS-AKS Working Papers in Korean Studies No. 33 the K-‐Pop Boom
School of Oriental and African Studies University of London SOAS-AKS Working Papers in Korean Studies No. 33 The K-Pop Boom in Taiwan Sang-Yeon Sung http://www.soas.ac.uk/japankorea/research/soas-aks-papers/ The K-Pop Boom in Taiwan Sang-Yeon Sung (University of Vienna) © 2012 Introduction Many people consider K-pop – the term being an abbreviation of Korean pop – to be one of the most successful Asian pop musics today. Its popularity and the popularity of its performers have spread not only within the region, but to many Western countries. If the first ‘Korean wave’ was centered in the popularity of Korean soap operas, such as Winter Sonata and Daejangkeum, the second ‘Korean wave’ is about K-pop and K-pop idols, such as Super Junior and Girls’ Generation. In both waves, Taiwan has played an important role in the dissemination of Korean popular culture within the region. Therefore, the K-pop boom in contemporary Taiwan is worthy of examination (after Moskowitz 2011: 4). This paper, based on ethnographic research in Taiwan, discusses the role of the Taiwanese music industry and Taiwanese music fans in the dissemination of K-pop, both in Taiwan and in other Chinese-speaking areas. The sources used are mainly interviews with fans, TV producers, music industry leaders, and officials of the Tourism Bureau in the Ministry of Transportation and Communications of the Republic of China, and have been conducted since March 2000. Taiwan: The Contact Zone of East Asian Pop Music Academic research on the popular culture of East Asia has typically focused on explaining the success of Japanese and Korean genres and styles (Huang 2011; Iwabuchi 2006; Kim 2005; Shim 2006; Sung 2008; Ubonrat & Shin 2007), leaving Taiwan unexplored. -

The Korean Wave As a Localizing Process: Nation As a Global Actor in Cultural Production
THE KOREAN WAVE AS A LOCALIZING PROCESS: NATION AS A GLOBAL ACTOR IN CULTURAL PRODUCTION A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Ju Oak Kim May 2016 Examining Committee Members: Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Advisory Chair, Department of Journalism Nancy Morris, Professor, Department of Media Studies and Production Patrick Murphy, Associate Professor, Department of Media Studies and Production Dal Yong Jin, Associate Professor, School of Communication, Simon Fraser University © Copyright 2016 by Ju Oak Kim All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation research examines the Korean Wave phenomenon as a social practice of globalization, in which state actors have promoted the transnational expansion of Korean popular culture through creating trans-local hybridization in popular content and intra-regional connections in the production system. This research focused on how three agencies – the government, public broadcasting, and the culture industry – have negotiated their relationships in the process of globalization, and how the power dynamics of these three production sectors have been influenced by Korean society’s politics, economy, geography, and culture. The importance of the national media system was identified in the (re)production of the Korean Wave phenomenon by examining how public broadcasting-centered media ecology has control over the development of the popular music culture within Korean society. The Korean Broadcasting System (KBS)’s weekly show, Music Bank, was the subject of analysis regarding changes in the culture of media production in the phase of globalization. In-depth interviews with media professionals and consumers who became involved in the show production were conducted in order to grasp the patterns that Korean television has generated in the global expansion of local cultural practices. -

Through an analysis of official documentation and multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork, this paper aims to introduce the current revitalization of ancient Confucian schools and rites, and the boom in children’s decorum camps and other Confucian-related educational programs on the Korean peninsula. Examining some of the schedules and curriculums, the textbooks studied, modernized rituals, and the agendas of the Ministry of Culture, the Confucian Association, and the New Religious Movement that lead the reforms, I deliberate upon possible reasons for this trend taking place at this particular time, contemplate the attempts to rebrand Confucianism as culture for better marketing, and point out some of the curious tensions and ironies this resurgence entails. -
