The islands are low and flat, ideal for nesting birds such as swan, black-backed gull and royal spoonbill. The West Coast Road State Highway 63 is a relatively easy drive from Marlborough through to Murchison and the West Coast via St Arnaud, Nelson Lakes National Park, and Kahurangi National Park, as well as providing an alternate route to the West Coast. The different scenery and easy driving conditions make SH63 a great option for those travelling from Marlborough to Nelson and looking to return south down the east coast without travelling the same road twice (SH6).
