Received 9/8/82, in revised form 2/5/83, accepted 6/5/83. ABSTRACT The shelf seas of Central New Zealand are strongly influenced by both wind and tidally driven circulation and mixing. The region is characterized by sudden and large variations in bathymetry; winds are highly variable and often intense. Cook Strait canyon is a mixing basin for waters of both subtropical and subantarctic origins. During weak winds, patterns of summer stratification and the loci of tidal mixing fronts correlate weil with the h/u3 stratification index. Under increasing wind stress, these prevailing patterns are easily upset, particularly for winds b1owing to the southeasterly quarter. Under such conditions, slope currents develop along the North Island west coast which eject warm, nutrient depleted subtropical water into the surface layers of the Strait. Coastal upwelling occurs on the flanks of Cook Strait canyon in the southeastern approaches. Under storm force winds to the south and southeast, intensifying transport through the Strait leads to increased upwelling of subsurface water occupying Cook Strait canyon at depth.

  • About Rodney District About Rodney District LTCCP 2009 - 2019 Volume 1
243 SECTION 6: About Rodney District LTCCP 2009 - 2019 About Rodney District Volume 1 About Rodney District Council Rodney District was constituted as part of the 1989 local government reform, which resulted in the amalgamation of the former Helensville Borough with the former Rodney County. Rodney District appears to have taken its name from Cape Rodney, a headland at the north of the curve of Omaha Bay, 2 kilometres north-east of Leigh on the east coast of the district. The cape was named by Captain James Cook, on 24 November 1769, after the British admiral Sir George Bridges Rodney (1719-92). The district covers an area of 2,475 square kilometres and it had a population of 89,200 in 2006 (2006 census – Statistics New Zealand). Rodney District’s neighbours are Waitakere City in the west, North Shore City in the south and Kaipara District in the north. It comprises four wards: Western Ward – the south-western part of the district including the communities of Helensville and Kumeu/Huapai as well as the smaller settlements of Riverhead and Waimauku. Central Ward – the central Rodney area contains the communities of Coatesville and Waitoki. Eastern Ward – the Hibiscus Coast including the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, Orewa and Silverdale. Northern Ward – the northern part of the district, including the Warkworth, Wellsford and Snells Beach/Algies Bay communities and a number of smaller coastal and inland settlements. 244 The purpose of the Rodney District Council is to enable democratic local decision-making to promote the social, economic, environmental and cultural wellbeing of the district now and for the future.

Studia Anglica Posnaniensia 52(4), 2017 doi: 10.1515/stap-2017-0019 BETWEEN ANZAC DAY AND WAITANGI DAY ANNA CZERWIŃSKA∗ Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań ABSTRACT This paper discusses the historical background and significance of the two most important national holidays in New Zealand: Waitangi Day and Anzac Day. Waitangi Day is celebrated on the 6th February and it commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between British representatives and a number of Māori chiefs in 1840. Following the signing of the treaty New Zealand became effectively a British colony. Anzac Day is celebrated on 25th April, i.e., on the anniversary of the landing of soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey in 1915, during World War One. There are three major differences between these two holidays: the process of those days becoming national holidays, the level of contestation, and the changing messages they have carried. The present study analyzes the national discourse around Anzac Day and Waitangi Day in New Zealand, and attempts to reveal how the official New Zealand government rhetoric about national unity becomes deconstructed. The following analysis is based on a selection of online articles from the New Zealand Herald and Stuff published in Auckland and Wellington, respectively. Both cities are populated by multi-ethnic groups, with Auckland featuring the largest Māori population.1 Keywords: Anzac Day; Waitangi Day; New Zealand; national holidays; identity. 1. • CANNABIS REFERENDUM 2020 Introduction
Media Analysis NEW ZEALAND CANNABIS REFERENDUM 2020 Introduction This analysis looks at 281 New Zealand-based media articles and opinion pieces as they appeared online during the cannabis referendum campaign period between May and October 2020. The objective was to assess the extent to which the set of articles and op-eds, as a whole, provided balanced coverage of both sides of debate – consistent with the New Zealand Media Council’s first principle of “accuracy, fairness and balance.”1 All the articles obtained were based on the list provided by NZ Politics Daily, a comprehensive, non- partisan list of articles, columns, and analysis relating to New Zealand politics and government, produced by the Democracy Project at Victoria University Wellington. This list was used to maintain the neutrality of the analysis and to avoid any accusation of searching for articles that leaned to one side or the other of the debate. There were 203 news items and 78 opinion pieces. Accuracy, fairness and balance was assessed across a variety of measures: the headline used, the number of people quoted within each piece arguing one or other side of the referendum question, and the proportion of content arguing each side of the campaign issues. Experts who quoted research or data were considered to be neutral. Any observed imbalance in the content or coverage across the set of news items and opinion pieces is interpreted as evidence of overall bias in reporting on the referendum question. The report was commissioned by Family First New Zealand. The analysis has been audited by an Emeritus Professor who specialises in research methods and statistics.
