Thanks should go to Scott Woodwiss for suggesting the topic, and the teams, and we’ll dive right in with Simtek Grand Prix. Simtek Grand Prix was Born from Simtek Research Ltd, the name standing for Simulation Technology. The company founders were Nick Wirth and Max Mosley, Both of whom had serious pedigree within motorsport. Mosley had Been a team owner Before with March, and Wirth was a mechanical engineering student who was snapped up By March as an aerodynamicist, working underneath Adrian Newey. When March was sold to Leyton House, Mosley and Wirth? Both decided to leave, and joined forces to create Simtek. Originally, the company had a single office in Wirth’s house, But it was soon oBvious they needed a Bigger, more wind‐tunnel shaped Base, which they Built in Oxfordshire. Mosley had the connections that meant racing teams from all over the gloBe were interested in using their research technologies, But while keeping the clients satisfied, Simtek Began designing an F1 car for BMW in secret. -

F1 Advent Calendar 2012 (Day 15) – Ten for Twelve
F1 Advent Calendar 2012 (Day 15) – Ten for twelve Hello and welcome to the F1 Advent Calendar 2012. This is our mini series taking a look at the highs and lows of the season Just gone, the key moments that made it a pretty incredible year. Today we are moving towards the rear of the grid where an intense battle was playing out. This is Day Fifteen - Ten for twelve. The talk from Caterham ahead of the 2012 season was all about moving forward and away from the other new teams they started their time in Formula One with. Two tenth place season finishes in a row had seen them with a cash inJection, and the hope was for them to take a leap forward and start scoring points. The double retirement in Australia wasn’t exactly the start they were looking for, but a 13th place in Mon- aco for Kovalainen and a similar result in Valencia for Petrov meant the team were keeping a comfortable hold on their tenth place. Then came the Singapore Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton put in a pretty fabulous lap to secure pole position on the Saturday, whilst all eyes were on the Williams pair. Pastor Maldonado was proving his pace in the car by hauling the Williams up to second place on the grid, whilst Bruno Senna crashed out in second qualify- ing, finding his way towards one of those pesky walls. The Ferrari drivers were split, with Fernando Alonso up in fifth, and Felipe Massa in thirteenth. Lining up on the front row of the grid, after a minute of silence paying tribute to Sid Watkins, Hamilton pre- pared for the lights to go out and the race to begin. -

Hesketh 308, 1975
Hesketh 308, 1975 1975 was the year in which James Hunt won his first Grand Prix, notably holding off Niki Lauda in the Ferrari 312T at Zandvoort, Holland. This was a race, which started in wet conditions, later changing to dry, requiring a change to slicks. It was Hunt who courageously took on slicks earlier than others when he realised there was an advantage to being on dry tyres a lap or two ahead of the opposition. This enabled him to get ahead and win the race. The somewhat outrageous team effort which began in 1973 was now firmly on the map, giving Hunt that vital confidence from his first GP win, in turn resulting in him being signed up for McLaren for 1976, the rest is history as they say. I first wanted to build a 1/12 model of this car when I saw John Shinton’s 1/43 example. I bought a kit to act as a reference and John supplied me with a few photos of the car in a state of renovation and some scale drawings. I built an exact monocoque from plasticard, using the scale drawings. The rollover bar was made from 3mm brass rod, which can be annealed on a gas cooker flame and then shaped more easily. The forward dashboard hoop was similarly made and the essential monocoque was complete. It was absolutely necessary to observe some of the complex angles of the tapering chassis and the inwardly inclined chassis sides towards the region of the footbox. The rollover bars were firmly secured inside the monocoque with epoxy resin. -

We Celebrate One of the Great Racing Car Constructors
LOLA AT 60 WE CELEBRATE ONE OF THE GREAT RACING CAR CONSTRUCTORS Including FROM BROADLEY TO BIRRANE GREATEST CARS LOLA’S SECRET WEAPON THE AUDI CHALLENGER The success of the Mk1 sports-racer, usually powered by the Coventry Climax 1100cc FWA engine, brought Lola Cars into existence. It overshadowed the similar e orts of Lotus boss Colin Chapman and remained competitive for several seasons. We believe it is one of designer Eric Broadleyʼs greatest cars, so turn to page 16 to see what our resident racer made of the original prototype at Donington Park. Although the coupe is arguably more iconic, the open version of the T70 was more successful. Developed in 1965, the Group 7 machine could take a number of di erent V8 engines and was ideal for the inaugural Can-Am contest in ʼ66. Champion John Surtees, Dan Gurney and Mark Donohue won races during the campaign, while Surtees was the only non-McLaren winner in ʼ67. The big Lola remains a force in historic racing.
