This short account of the project looks at the integrated incorporation of oral history recordings. In particular, it looks at the new approach taken to the interpretation of the museum’s Messerschmitt Me 163B-1a Komet rocket fighter. This uses oral histories from the only Allied pilot to make a powered flight in a Komet, and from a Jewish slave labourer who was forced to build aircraft for Nazi Germany. This focus on oral history, along with an approach to interpretation that emphasises social history, rather than technology, has proven popular with visitors and allowed the building of audiences. 1. INTRODUCTION Traditionally, transport museums and collections have focused on the technological history of their objects, producing Top Trump displays which look at the fastest, biggest, most mass-produced, etc. Colin Divall and Andrew Scott noted in 2001 that ‘transport museums followed some way behind other sorts of museums in dealing with social context.’ 1 These displays often include great detail about the engines and their performance, sometimes including extreme technical detail such as bore size, stroke length, etc. -

HMAS Diamantina
RAAF Radschool Association Magazine – Vol 45 Page 16 HMAS Diamantina. In Perth last year, while we were looking over HMAS Stirling, we couldn’t help noticing the number of times the Navy referred to the old WW2 frigate, the HMAS Diamantina. It seems she was something special and as we live in Brisbane we know where she rests today so we decided it was time we had a look over her, just to see what all the fuss was about. Anyone familiar with Brisbane will also know Southbank which is the Phoenix that arose from the site left vacant when Expo (30 April 1988 – 30 October 1988) wound up. Prior to Expo, that area of Brisbane held old storage and warehouse sheds, dilapidated wooden wharves and at its eastern end, the old South Brisbane Dry Dock. When Expo finished, the site lay vacant for a period while they figured out what to do with the land and eventually they got enough people to agree to a set of plans and today we have the wonderful open area that is extensively used by Brisbanites and visitors every day. But they left the old dry dock. The dock was built in 1876, is 131 metres long and during the war was a strategic asset having provided facilities for the servicing of over a hundred RAN and USN ships. It was finally closed in 1972 and now, as part of the Queensland Maritime Museum, is the final resting place for the 2,120 ton HMAS Diamantina. A couple of years ago, when Brisbane flooded, so did the dock, the Diamantina floated off her chocks and after the two huge centrifugal pumps, which can A RAAF Radschool Association Magazine – Vol 45 Page 16 completely empty the dock in only 3-4 hours, pumped out the water, Diamantina was resettled on new chocks and that’s how she rests today. -

Accompanied by his father, Ray, Robin knocked on the door of Canley, Cunningham’s home at Harpenden in Hertfordshire and, after the usual pleasantries were exchanged, Ray set up the tape recorder and Robin began his interview. He asked the kind of questions a schoolboy might be expected to ask, and his father helped out with a few more specific queries. As the interview drew to a close, Robin plucked up courage to ask a more personal question: ‘Were you ever scared when flying?’ Thinking that Cunningham would recall some life-or-death moments when under fire from enemy aircraft during nightfighting operations, father and son were very surprised at the immediate and direct answer: ‘Yes, every time I flew the DH108.’ Cunningham, always calm, resolute and courageous in his years as chief test pilot of de Havilland, was rarely one to display his emotions, but where this aircraft was concerned he had very strong feelings, and there were times during the 160 or so flights he made in the DH108 that he feared for his life - and on one occasion came close to losing it. -
