Cinema. Super-heróis. Marvel. Universo Compartilhado. ABSTRACT The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the integration of different film franchises based on the superheroes of the Marvel Comics publisher. In this narrative reality, superheroes coexist in the same universe, influencing each other's stories and culminating in the formation of the team The Avengers. The shared universe, narrative and creative strategy widely explored in comic books, then gains an audiovisual version that revolutionized the cinema of the 21st century. The present research aims to analyze the recriation of the concept of shared universe of comics in the cinema taking as object of study the films of the first phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and The Avengers (2012). For this, we revisit the concept of superhero based on Coogan (2006) to identify how these characters appropriate elements from different sources to establish their characteristics, among them the very notion of shared universe. Following Genette's (1989) transtextuality theory, we then discuss how these dialogues are internalized by giving rise to a narrative genre of its own, though quite elastic, and how it shapes itself in comic books and cinema. We argue that the Marvel Cinematic Universe explores in a high degree the dialogical character of the universe of superheroes with other histories, even with their own comics and films. Thus, in the context of the convergence culture defined by Jenkins (2009), the adaptation of the Marvel Universe to the cinema represents a particular case of creative adaptation between comics and cinematographic languages, based on the discussions proposed by Barbieri (2017), Stam (2006), Hutcheon (2013), Campos (2011) and Jeffries (2017). Finally, we analyze the construction of the Marvel shared universe in the cinema in light of these intertextual and intermedia relations and the recent research on narrative ecosystems. McDermott Introduction By the mid-1970’s, many fans of the “Golden Age” of comic books had grown up to become writers and ultimately editors for the comics publishers, sometimes setting the nar- rative histories for their favorite childhood characters themselves. Many of these fans-turned- pro produced comics series that attempted to recapture the Golden Age’s excitement, patriotic fervor and whiz-bang attitude. The most successful of these titles were produced by Roy Thomas, who fashioned a coherent history of costumed heroes during World War II, and rec- onciled the wildly inconsistent stories of the 1940’s with tightly patrolled continuity initiated with the “Silver Age” of the 1960’s. With The Invaders (1975-1979), Thomas focused on the hitherto unrevealed wartime exploits of Marvel Comics’ early mainstays Captain America, the Human Torch, and Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner. In 1980, he moved to DC Comics and launched All-Star Squadron, which juggled the histories of the Justice Society of Amer- ica and nearly a hundred secondary characters.

For instance, some immortals Recommend Supervisor » seem to have died at least once but often reappear momentarily in a new revitalized incarnation; especially common amongst mythological characters (gods, goddesses, angels, demons, etc.). Deities, in fact, tend to be consistently immortal and are completely resistant to death and deterioration (e.g., Marvel Comics' Thor, Greek Gods, etc.). These beings are both functionally immortal and invulnerable and merely give the appearance of being slain for a temporary time before rematerializing.

  • Visualizing Superman: Artistic Strategizing in Early Representations of the Archetypal Man in Comic Books
arts Article Visualizing Superman: Artistic Strategizing in Early Representations of the Archetypal Man in Comic Books Bar Leshem Department of the Arts, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Be’er Sheva 8410501, Israel; [email protected] Abstract: In 1933, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two Jewish teenagers from Ohio, fashioned an ideal personality called Superman and a narrative of his marvelous deeds. Little did they suspect that several years after conceptualizing the figure and their many vain attempts to sell the story to various comic book publishers, their creation would give rise to the iconic genre of comic book superheroes. There is no doubt that the Superman character and the accompanying narrative led to Siegel and Shuster, the writer and artist, respectively, becoming famous. However, was it only the appealing character and compelling narrative that accounted for the story’s enormous popularity, which turned its creators into such a celebrated pair, or did the visual design play a major part in that phenomenal success? Recent years have seen a burgeoning interest in the comic book medium in several disciplines, including history, philosophy, and literature. However, little has been written about its visual aspect, and comic book art has not yet been accorded much recognition among art historians. Since the integration of storyline and art is what allow the comic book medium to be unique and interesting, I contend that there should be a focus on the art as well as on the narrative of works in comic books. In the present study, I explore the significance of the visual image in the prototype of the Superman figure that Siegel and Schuster sold to DC Comics and its first appearance in the series American Comic Books.

  • The Superhero Narrative and the Graphic Novel Joseph J
The Superhero Narrative and the Graphic Novel Joseph J. Darowski For many in contemporary culture, the superhero genre and the comic book industry have become inextricably linked. For example, it seems that, to public perception, a so-called “comic book movie” is synonymous with a superhero movie. It is even possible to overhear people referring to “the comic book genre,” although this is a misnomer. As Douglas Wolk explains, “As cartoonists and their longtime admirers are getting a little tired of explaining, comics are not a genre; they’re a medium” (11). The medium of comic books, a combination of text and images, which Scott McCloud defined as “juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence, intended to convey information and/or produce an aesthetic response in the viewer” (9), can be used to tell stories in any genre. In fact, the comic book industry has historically found significant success with other genres. There have been periods in the comic book industry when funny animal stories, romantic soap operas, sci-fi adventures, or horror tales outsold the superhero comic books. Also significant is that the superhero genre has been immensely popular in other mediums. The superhero genre has become a staple on film, television, and in video games. But despite these distinctions, the connection between superheroes and comic books remains strong. It is easy to understand how the genre and mode of storytelling have become identified with one another. It was in comic books that the superhero genre was fully formed and fleshed out in the late 1930s, and the superhero comic books have been the most successful genre for the industry’s largest publishers in the last several decades.

  • With This Ring Jumpchain
With This Ring Jumpchain Version 1.2 By Disposable_Face DC’s Earth 16 is a world where villains have learned that open villainy is not sufficient to achieve their goals, where the major names in crime – Luthor, Savage, the Brain, and others of similar temperament and caliber – have subtly joined forces and formed the Light, a council of villains dedicated to advancing their own interests and end their worlds dependency on heroes like the Justice League, some hope to do this by advancing technology, others by taking over the world, but for now they hide their goals and resources as they gather their power. DC’s Earth 16 is a world where young heroes struggle to step out of their mentor’s shadows. Where young men and women work to define themselves independently of their parentage or their teachers, while facing the worst of what the universe has to offer, threats both subtle and gross, terrestrial and xeno, old and new. When their mentors cannot adapt to the new tactics of villains, or when the drama inherent to teenage life is complicated by the mess of super-hero life, Young Justice must rise to the occasion and save the world. This … is not that world. … Oh, the world of “With This Ring” certainly resembles the world of Young Justice/Earth 16, though it includes a much broader swath of general DC characters and storylines, but there are ever-growing differences stemming, largely, from a single event. th On the 4 of July, 2010, a man awakens in orbit over an Earth that is not his own, with nothing but his pajamas and an Orange Power Ring (not even possessing an Orange Lantern), and while Paul recognizes the broad strokes of DC, he has no memory of this specific universe and the nuances of its plot.

  • The Hidden Power of Superheroes the Ability of Superhero Movies to Influence Political Attitudes
The Hidden Power of Superheroes The Ability of Superhero Movies to Influence Political Attitudes Justin Cole i Abstract Although the literature on superheroes has expanded in recent years, it has neglected to examine whether superhero movies can affect political views. This oversight is regrettable given the recent surge in the popularity of superhero movies that engage directly with political issues such as The Dark Knight (2008), Iron Man 3 (2013), and Captain America: Civil War (2016). After a lengthy historical exploration of superheroes and a thematic analysis of these superhero movies – which collectively demonstrate that superheroes are an enduring cultural phenomenon as well as provide the theoretical underpinnings of their ability to effect attitudinal change – this study used a two-wave panel experiment to evaluate the extent to which superhero movies could cause attitudinal change. Ultimately, this study found that a significant percentage of participants changed their views on various policies related to the war on terror including torture, mass surveillance, military spending, and foreign intervention as a result of watching these superhero movies. These findings demonstrate that further research in this area is essential, particularly so long as superhero movies continue to receive critical and popular acclaim. ii Acknowledgements First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to my adviser, Dr. Cori Dauber, for the guidance and advice that she provided me. Despite not even enjoying superheroes herself, she had immense faith in the value of my research, which helped propel me across the finish line. Besides my adviser, I would like to thank the other member of my thesis committee: Dr.
