Because there was not much opportunity for employment in this town, her mother sent her to finishing school, where she would learn to walk, talk, and act in a way that did not reflect her small-town background. After finishing high school, Dotty was sent to the Fay School of Boston on Beacon Hill. Although the school insisted that Dotty stay there for long hours, they did not provide dorm space. After searching the Boston area, Dotty found dorm space at Boston College. Thus, while she was going through finishing school, Dotty enrolled at Boston College as a part-time student. Her education gave her the grace and style that her mother had wished, along with the knowledge that came from a college education. -

Prof. Carolyn Snively will be graduating this spring, that is, after a long career at Gettysburg, she will be retiring at the end of this current spring semester. We will miss her. The fund shall be used to provide undergraduate financial aid. (2009) International Funds The Curriculum The Bryn Mawr curriculum is designed to encourage breadth of The Ann Updegraff Allen ’42 and Ann T. Allen ’65 Endowed learning and training in the fundamentals of scholarship in the Scholarship Fund was established by Ann Updegraff Allen ’42 first two years, and mature and sophisticated study in depth in and Ann T. Allen ’65 for students in good academic standing, a major program during the last two years. Its overall purpose is with preference for international students. Derk Visser December 2018 Obituary
With sadness, the family of Derk Visser, Ph.D. of Trappe, Pennsylvania, share news of his death on December 16, 2018. He was 88. Dr. Visser retired from Ursinus College in 1999 where he began teaching in 1968 after receiving a Masters degree in history from the University of Pennsylvania (1960) and a Doctorate of Philosophy, also in history, from Bryn Mawr College (1966). Prior to joining the Ursinus faculty, Dr. Visser was an instructor in Latin, French, and History at the Haverford (PA) School. Dr. Visser also held positions as Assistant Professor at Muhlenberg College and Instructor at Temple University where he taught evening and summer school courses for many years. Born in the Netherlands, Dr. Visser grew up in a village on the outskirts of Amsterdam and was the youngest of four children. The post-depression 1930s and the German occupation of 1940- 1945, as well as a Calvinist education juxtaposed with time spent exploring the Dutch landscape alone and in fondly remembered family excursions, stirred a life-long interest in the relationship between the human context and the natural world. As a young adult Dr. Visser joined the Dutch Merchant Marines which led him to the coasts of Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East as well as ports across Europe and earned him the moniker of “professor” for his penchant for documenting his experiences with a camera and on a typewriter. Dr. Visser drew on these experiences throughout his academic career, both to enliven his seminar lectures and to refine the scope of his research. His wanderings resulted in a personal catalog of climate change and habitat loss. -

Trafficking Materials and Maria Rentetzi Gendered Experimental Practices Chapter 4 The Institute for Radium Research in Red Vienna As this work has now been organized after several years of tentative efforts each collaborator has his or her [emphasis mine] particular share to take in making the practical preparations necessary for an experiment. Besides each has his or her particular theme for research which he pursues and where he can count on the help from one or more of his fellow workers. Such help is freely given certain workers having spent months preparing the means required for another workers theme.1 When Hans Pettersson submitted this description of the work at the Radium 1 Institute in a report to the International Education Board in April 1928, several women physicists were already part of his research team on artificial disintegration. A number of other women explored radiophysics and radiochemistry as collaborators of the institute, formed their own research groups, and worked alongside some of the best-known male physicists in the field. More specifically, between 1919 and 1934, more than one-third of the institute's personnel were women. They were not technicians or members of the laboratory support stuff but experienced researchers or practicum students who published at the same rate as their male counterparts. Marelene Rayner-Canham and Geoffrey Rayner-Canham have already drawn our 2 attention to the fact that women clustered in radioactivity research in the early twentieth century. Identifying three different European research schools on radioactivity—the French, English, and Austro-German—the Rayner-Canhams argue that women "seemed to play a disproportionately large share in the research work in radioactivity compared to many other fields of physical science."2 Through prosopographical studies of important women in these three locations, the authors address the puzzle of why so many women were attracted to this particular field. -

Coomes, Advisor As women entered higher education, positions were created to address their specific needs. In the 1890s, the position of dean of women proliferated, and in 1903 groups began to meet regularly in professional associations they called conferences of deans of women. This study examines how and why early deans of women formed these professional groups, how those groups can be characterized, and who comprised the conferences. It also explores the degree of continuity between the conferences and a later organization, the National Association of Deans of Women (NADW). Using evidence from archival sources, the known meetings are listed and described chronologically. Seven different conferences are identified: those intended for deans of women (a) Of the Middle West, (b) In State Universities, (c) With the Religious Education Association, (d) In Private Institutions, (e) With the Association of Collegiate Alumnae, (f) With the Southern Association of College Women, and (g) With the National Education Association (also known as the NADW). Each of the conferences is analyzed using seven organizational variables: membership, organizational structure, public relations, fiscal policies, services and publications, ethical standards, and affiliations. Individual profiles of each of 130 attendees are provided, and as a group they can be described as professional women who were both administrators and scholars, highly-educated in a variety of disciplines, predominantly unmarried, and active in social and political causes of the era. -

Mather Available research and scholarship to serve as the basis for improving student services in Ghanaian universities are limited. The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions of the work by deans of students at Ghanaian universities and to further understand the ways in which their experiences, values and philosophy influence their roles on campus. In particular, the deans of students’ understanding of their work in providing student services, promoting student learning, student engagement, student development and success is of special interest in this study. Available literature on traditional and innovative models of student affairs practices in the United States served as the theoretical framework of the study. Interviews, observations, and document analysis were used as sources of data collection in four selected Ghanaian universities.
