Mather Available research and scholarship to serve as the basis for improving student services in Ghanaian universities are limited. The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions of the work by deans of students at Ghanaian universities and to further understand the ways in which their experiences, values and philosophy influence their roles on campus. In particular, the deans of students’ understanding of their work in providing student services, promoting student learning, student engagement, student development and success is of special interest in this study. Available literature on traditional and innovative models of student affairs practices in the United States served as the theoretical framework of the study. Interviews, observations, and document analysis were used as sources of data collection in four selected Ghanaian universities. Research findings from the data analysis showed that the traditional leadership mindset of many Ghanaian university staff members conflicted with the more liberal orientation of many students, leading to student-staff tension on the university campuses. I also found out that many deans of students’ offices in Ghanaian universities use an administrative-centered model of student affairs practice which is often bureaucratic and less student-centered. 4 Again, the study revealed that many students were not satisfied with the services provided by the deans of students’ offices. While the deans of students perceive students as children who need parental care on campus, students are demanding more innovative and progressive approaches to providing student services on campus. Both students and staff acknowledged inadequate resources as a major challenge in the service delivery efforts of the deans of students. 5 I dedicate this work to my lovely wife, Becky Boakye-Yiadom, and my children, Kobby Boakye-Yiadom, Ama Boakye-Yiadom, Kwaku Boakye-Yiadom, and Afia Boakye-Yiadom. 6 Acknowledgments I am grateful to the Almighty God for His Amazing Grace! While in Banda conducting archaeological research in 2009, I was asked by individuals in the community if it would be possible to reissue the family history booklet because the original printing had limited circulation and many of the original copies lost or misplaced. Over the years while pursuing archaeological research, additional families had requested that their family histories be included if a revised version of the booklet was ever produced.

Because there was not much opportunity for employment in this town, her mother sent her to finishing school, where she would learn to walk, talk, and act in a way that did not reflect her small-town background. After finishing high school, Dotty was sent to the Fay School of Boston on Beacon Hill. Although the school insisted that Dotty stay there for long hours, they did not provide dorm space. After searching the Boston area, Dotty found dorm space at Boston College. Thus, while she was going through finishing school, Dotty enrolled at Boston College as a part-time student. Her education gave her the grace and style that her mother had wished, along with the knowledge that came from a college education.

GEMA Online® Journal of Language Studies 143 Volume 15(1), February 2015 Truncation of Some Akan Personal Names Kwasi Adomako [email protected] University of Education, Winneba, Ghana ABSTRACT This paper examines some morphophonological processes in Akan personal names with focus on the former process. The morphological processes of truncation of some indigenous personal names identified among the Akan (Asante) ethnic group of Ghana are discussed. The paper critically looks at some of these postlexical morpheme boundary processes in some Akan personal names realized in the truncated form when two personal names interact. In naming a child in a typical Akan, specifically in Asante‟s custom, a family name is given to the child in addition to his/her „God-given‟ name or day-name. We observe truncation and some phonological processes such as vowel harmony, compensatory lengthening, etc. at the morpheme boundaries in casual speech context. These morphophonological processes would be analyzed within the Optimality Theory framework where it would be claimed that there is templatic constraint that demands that the base surname minimally surfaces as disyllable irrespective of the syllable size of the base surname.

Coomes, Advisor As women entered higher education, positions were created to address their specific needs. In the 1890s, the position of dean of women proliferated, and in 1903 groups began to meet regularly in professional associations they called conferences of deans of women. This study examines how and why early deans of women formed these professional groups, how those groups can be characterized, and who comprised the conferences. It also explores the degree of continuity between the conferences and a later organization, the National Association of Deans of Women (NADW). Using evidence from archival sources, the known meetings are listed and described chronologically. Seven different conferences are identified: those intended for deans of women (a) Of the Middle West, (b) In State Universities, (c) With the Religious Education Association, (d) In Private Institutions, (e) With the Association of Collegiate Alumnae, (f) With the Southern Association of College Women, and (g) With the National Education Association (also known as the NADW). Each of the conferences is analyzed using seven organizational variables: membership, organizational structure, public relations, fiscal policies, services and publications, ethical standards, and affiliations. Individual profiles of each of 130 attendees are provided, and as a group they can be described as professional women who were both administrators and scholars, highly-educated in a variety of disciplines, predominantly unmarried, and active in social and political causes of the era.

    Capturing Students’ Target Language Exposure Collaboratively, on Video – The Akan (Twi) Example Seth Antwi Ofori University of Wisconsin – Madison Abstract: The video project at the center of this paper is one of the strategies the author has been utilizing in teaching Akan as a foreign language aimed at reinforcing aspects of Akan covered in a given semester, specifically as students transition through different levels of language instruction and acquisition or go home on vacation. The significance of this project lies in the fact that it promotes language documenta- tion and material development in less-documented languages, and also, in the fact that it gives foreign language learners the opportunity to reinforce their target language exposure on vacation, or as they transition through the different levels of study, because each student gets a copy of the video to watch with their communities outside of the classroom. 1. Introduction The non-availability of videos for teaching Akan as a second language, coupled with students’ inability to retain target language materials, largely as a result of a long school vacation during which they have no access to their new language, are problems that led to this idea of requiring and organizing students each semester to cap- ture much of their language exposure on video. The video at the cen- ter of this article is worth sharing because, while there have been countless articles, dissertations (and even books) on the various me- thods of teaching a foreign language through video (Morris 2000, Steele and Johnson 2000, Rhodes and Pufahl 2004), there have been virtually none on students of less commonly taught, funded, and do- cumented languages working together each semester to document their target language exposure through video.

Research Review New Series 16.2 (2000) 19-33 COMMUNICATING NOMINA TIM: SOME SOCIAL ASPECTS OF BONO PERSONAL NAMES Rwasi Ansu-Kyeremeh Abstract This article describes various communication functions performed by Bono (a Ghanaian people) personal names. Indeed, in the non-western context, personal names have been linked to social status, or may have cosmic or religious significance, or may assume gender dimensions. From data obtained from interviews and observations, it establishes a basic twoHtiame Bono personal name format. It outlines the different characteristics, attributes and formats of Bono names classifying them into ascribed or acquired, circumstantial (fixed and substitute) and day- based names. The characterisation includes the capacity of certain classes of names to generate meaning. The article concludes with the observation that the dynamism of the naming system seems to be transforming name formats to a degree that is causing a loss in their communicative attributes. A future in which the communicative capacity of the Bono personal name may not be so evident is, thus, predicted. Introduction Personal names may be of little consequence in various contexts.1 This paper contends that persona] names support human interaction as a vehicle for communication. It outlines certain properties of Bono personal names that are intrinsically communicative.2 Thereupon, it proposes that, contrary to any belief that there is nothing in a name, personal names play a role in social interaction, at the root of which is communication.
