3 Chairman's Chatter A couple of apologies to start with. We were late getting the 2011 calendar onto the website as we had difficulties in uploading onto the re-designed site and, similarly, this has delayed the display of the 2010 winners – hopefully we will resolve these glitches shortly. We have also had a number of comments that the new website is rather dark, there is no forum for members to use, some of the information is out dated etc. etc. We are taking these comments on board and, hopefully, we will be bring- ing the operation 'in-house' so we can keep it up to date and quickly edit any- thing which is out date. You will see that this years calendar includes a number of different events on the same day giving you the option of picking your favourite or most conven- ient venue. We also have some new venues giving greater variety to the Championship and to make it a more attractive calendar - You will also note that we have reduced the Championship qualifying requirement to one NSCC organised event only to give everyone the best opportunity of featuring in the final results at the end of the season. Until a few years ago you had to complete 3 from 5 NSCC events and this did- n't produce any problems for anybody but for some reason in recent years competitors aren't able to commit to the Championship as fully as they used to hence the need to reduce the qualifying figure. Please remember that the main income for the Club is from it's own events, we get no financial benefit from other rounds in the Championship, so I would still ask you to enter as many of the NSCC events at Curborough, MIRA and Thoresby as you can. Thanks to great work by Steve Brown we have a significantly increased num- ber of clubs using our events as rounds of their championship this year which, hopefully, will give us the chance to increase our income even though we have dropped the loss making May event this year – who knows we may even be over subscribed and have the 'reserve lists' which used to be the norm. A couple of invitations to Mallory Park sprints in March & June came in too late to be considered for the Championship but look out for details in Spin Off.- as an invited club they are open to NSCC members – the sprinting will be dove- tailed into the race meetings being run on the same day, just make sure you are ready to go when they call you. Not a lot else this month, the Elise has survived the bad weather and started on the button the other week (thank goodness for trickle chargers) – just need to get some practice in if I'm going to avoid the wooden spoon at every event like last year. A couple of winter paddocks to go so hopefully will see you there

Editors Mutterings

A New Year dawns and I trust this edition of Spin Off finds you all in good spirits and relishing the impending start to the new motor sport season for 2011. Those of you with your pride and joy strewn across the garage floor might want to think about putting those pieces in to some semblance of order and getting a test day booked prior to the start of the season. The first event usually has a habit of sneaking up on you all too quickly. For those of you who are “ready to go”, might I suggest that you download a set of the Club Championship regulations and read them thoroughly. These should be available to download from the club website, if not keep checking as we have a couple of novices on website duty and it could all go horribly wrong! The lack of time spent in reading the criteria necessary to compete in any championship, not just NSCC, is all too evident when some drivers find out too late in the season that they have competed in insufficient events or the wrong events to qualify for a championship position. The Championship Regulations are published for the benefit of all NSCC Championship competitors. A lot of time is put into com- piling these and their accuracy is of paramount importance to the MSA, so please take the time to read them. I hope that as many of you as possible will endeavour to put pen to paper during the coming season to provide the membership with de- tails of your exploits on the track. Whether you are a seasoned com- petitor, or a complete novice, it matters not. It all makes for inter- esting reading. Remember, we all had to start somewhere and we all have had our moments during out initiation into motor sport. All my contact details are on the inside front cover of each issue so please send me what you can. Better still, why not us know what state your race car is in during the off-season as well!

Classic Corner – December 2010 Incorporating Memorable Moments

Five years ago the changes for the 2006 season included a new Classic Car class at our sprints for cars over 25 years old - and there would be an additional age and engine size related score sheet to help show some reasonable comparison. The Class results for the season were: 1st Stewart Scott Triumph TR4 – 2nd Paul Dowsett Alfa Romeo Sud – 3rd David Holden Alpine Renault A110. The year also saw 57 drivers sign on for the Malory Park 50 year classic parade organised by the club in recognition of our having ran the first car race meeting at the venue in 1956.

For 2007 Stewart Scott repeated his victory, Andy Walker MGB V8 was 2nd and Nick Parrans-Smith MGB Roadster was 3rd. The club also ran a sec- ond parade at Mallory Park and the third and final one in the seeries in 2008 to mark the 60 year jubilee celebrations of the club.

More classic snipetts in the next issue.

CLUB WEBSITE - www.gosprinting.co.uk

By the time this edition of Spin Off drops on your door mat, the club website should have been updated with last years winners photos and a new tab created to provide the text for previous years winners. The 2011 Championship Regulations, Calendar, Membership and Championship forms are all available to download from the site now. Apologies for the delay in getting all the changes made to the site, this was a culmination of shortage of time and an incredible lack of knowledge as to how the website actually works. We have had had a kind offer of literally “free” help in keeping the website up to date and this offer will be considered at the next com- mittee meeting. PM

MMMEMBERSHIPMEMBERSHIP 2011

Membership is running a little slow at the moment as many of you can’t see the start of the new season yet. To those of you who know any NSCC members who have not rejoined yet, please encourage them to do so as many of them leave it too late rejoin or register for the champion- ship as points gained at events cannot be calculated ret- rospectively. Thank you to those of you who have returned the Spin Off questionnaires that were sent out with Decembers edi- tion. If any of you still have these forms, please complete and return them to me or register your views via email to the address on the form.

Our nominated charity for 2011 is the Air Ambulance. I hope you will all support the clubs efforts to raise as much as we can for this well deserved charity. KimKimKim

13 Marshals Page It was good to see so many of you at the Donington Park Training Day. The paddock suite was a mass of orange, about 200 of you hardy souls signed on (I'm told). Many were responding to the taster days so well or- ganised by Mary, Chris and their team. Lets hope there will be more younger volunteers to support our clubs and their enthusiasm for Motor sport. Thanks to all of you already volunteered to support our Sprints again this season - thirteen to date. Your details have been passed on to Kim so you will be receiving your Spin Off in due course. I am sure I will be seeing you at some events before our Sprints start in July, maybe the Mallory Park one in March.

During the lunchtime break in the Paddock Suite at the Donington Park Training Day marshals and friends held a memorial to Andy conducted by BMMC Chairman Chris Hobson. Andy's widow Maria, daughter Michelle and family members were pre- sent and a mounted brass plaque and rose tree (orange of course) were dedicated followed by a minutes silence. Andy's family and a few marshalling friends were driven to the Doning- ton Park Supporters Club Memorial Garden where the tree was planted and the plaque placed. A very special occasion for a very special person. Everyone is welcome to visit the DPSC situated between Redgate and Hollywood when the circuit is open for events.

Bernard Hunter It is with much sadness that we have recently learned that Ber- nard Hunter died suddenly on 11th August 2010 aged 62. Bernard raced with NSCC in the Formula Ford race at the Don- nington Park 1st Anniversary Race Meeting held on Saturday 27th May 1978 in his Van Diemen RF78 - and won the race. He again competed on September 9th 1978 at Donnington in his Formula Libre Chevron B35 Swindon. Bernard also raced with NSCC at Mallory Park, Cadwell and Croft. The circuit at Croft was very cold and the paddock office was freezing at 7.00 am in the morning! But everyone always en- joyed the bank Holiday meetings with great enthusiasm. The Scottish drivers used to drive down through the night to all our racing venues; on a Saturday driving from Aberdeen and Ed- inburgh in their transporters with their teams arriving in the early hours ready for when the paddock office opened at 7.00 am. They were a jolly crowd, after 2 days they would drive back up to Scotland on the Sunday at midnight. These were very happy days for the Nottingham Sports Car Club! Bernard had a Plant and Crane Hire business in Edinburgh; later he gained a commercial pilots licence and enjoyed flying his heli- copter.

New date for National Motorsport Week 2011 National Motorsport Week 2011 will take place from 25 June to 3 July after the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) and the Motor Sports Association (MSA) confirmed that they will join forces to re-launch the annual event. Designed to draw attention to motor sport up and down the country for an in- tensive ten-day period, National Motorsport Week will encourage companies to open their doors, venues to offer taster experiences, clubs to run recruitment campaigns and the local and national media to fill their pages with details of all the events. The new date provides an early summer opportunity to draw national attention to motor sport and enables the week to culminate in the annual Festival of Speed extravaganza at Goodwood. The following week will also feature a great deal of media coverage of motor sport with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. “The MSA has always supported the concept of National Motorsport Week,” explains MSA Chief Executive Colin Hilton. “Indeed, the objectives of the year- round Go Motorsport campaign are very similar – let’s get more people in- volved in motor sport. We believe that the new date will make it possible for more activity to be included and we are grateful to Lord March for permitting us to build the week around the world famous Festival of Speed. It should be a great week.”

Jake Cook wins RSF MSA Young Driver of the Year Formula Ford competitor Jake Cook has won the first ever RSF MSA Young Driver of the Year award. The accolade – sponsored by the Racing Steps Foundation (RSF) – will be awarded annually to a student enrolled on the MSA’s Advanced Apprentice- ship in Sporting Excellence (AASE). Cook and four other finalists attended a shootout for the 2010 award last De- cember at Pure Tech Racing in Surrey, where they spent time in a race simu- lator before delivering short presentations about the key lessons they have learned from the Apprenticeship course. The judges were MSA Performance Director Robert Reid and GP3 driver James Calado (pictured with Cook, cen- tre), as well as National Race Coach David Brabham, RSF’s Simon Pearson, Autosport magazine’s Ben Anderson, and MSA Communications Director Ben Taylor. “It means a great deal to me to win the RSF MSA Young Driver of the Year award,” said 17-year-old Cook. “The AASE programme has taught me a great

23 “It means a great deal to me to win the RSF MSA Young Driver of the Year award,” said 17-year-old Cook. “The AASE programme has taught me a great deal about human performance and sports science, which I’ve been able to apply both on the track and off it to achieve stronger results. My whole approach to the sport has changed dramatically be- cause of what I have learned in the past 18 months. I’d strongly encour- age other young drivers seeking a professional motor sport career to join the scheme in the future.” Cook will receive a cheque for £1000 at the MSA’s prestigious Night of Champions ceremony at the Royal Automobile Club on 21 January. All finalists also received a Grand Prix Racewear voucher worth £100.

Group B cars to feature at Donington Festival Group B rally cars will be in action at this year’s Donington Historic Festival, which takes place on 29 April to 1 May 2011. Donington was used as a stage on the RAC Rally from 1972 until the 1990s, en- compassing the Group B era of unlimited boost, low weight and high-tech materi- als. A line-up of original works Group B machines will be in action, including the Audi Quattro, MG Metro 6R4, Ford RS200, Lancia 037, Porsche 911 RSR, Peugeot 205 T16 and even a Group B Ferrari 308 GTB. The cars will perform on a specially designed, all- Tar- mac stage on the GP loop, with free spectator access. Also featuring will be pre-1960 and ’77-’85 touring cars, pre-War and Group C sports cars, pre-’63 GTs and World Endurance Championship sports prototypes from 1968- 71. Jaguar E-Type to celebrate 50th anniversary at Silverstone Classic The 50th anniversary of the legendary Jaguar E-Type is to be celebrated at this year’s Silverstone Classic on 22-24 July.

24 Launched in 1961, the E-Type remains one of the most iconic sports cars of all time. Its half-century will be honoured with a host of special races and displays, including two races dedicated solely to competition versions, and a record grid of more than 50 race-prepared E-Types is predicted. In total, more than a thou- sand racing and road-going E-Types are expected to join the celebrations at Silverstone. Event Director Nick Wigely said: “With so many E-Types on and off the track, it’s going to be a fantastic occasion - the world’s biggest and best celebration for one of the truly great sports cars. What’s more, the Silverstone Classic offers the perfect place and timing for the world to celebrate such an important milestone in automotive history. After all, Jaguar de- signed and produced the E-Types just up the road at Browns Lane in Coventry. It’s going to be an amazing.

MIA announces new Honorary President

The Right Honourable Lord Drayson of Kensington has succeeded Lord Astor of Hever as Honorary President of the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA). A lifelong motor sport fan, Paul Drayson became a working peer in the UK Par- liament in 2004. Before last year’s General Election, he held positions as Minis- ter of Science and Innovation in the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and Minister of State for Strategic Defence Acquisition Reform in the Ministry of Defence. Drayson is notable for having pioneered green technology on the racetrack. He won a round of the British GT Championship in 2007 with a unique bio-fuelled Aston Martin DBRS9. Since 2009, driving for his own Drayson Racing team, he has contested the ALMS, LMS and Asian Le Mans series, and driven at Le Mans, Sebring and in the Petit Le Mans endurance races. Last year he won outright at Road America, and Drayson Racing came third overall in the inaugu- ral Intercontinental Le Mans Championship, campaigning a unique Flex-Fuel Lola-Judd V10 LMP1 coupe. “I am a long-standing fan of the MIA and its achievements, and firmly believe it has an ever-increasing role to play in optimising the world-class resources and talent that lie within the motorsport industry,” said Drayson. “I believe my career and experience in business and Government, coupled with my lifelong passion for motor-racing, will be of aid to the MIA’s work and the prosperity of its mem- bers.”

25 First Women in Motorsport seminar is a success

Former WRC co-driver Nicky Grist, broadcaster Louise Goodman and former Di- rector of Ford of Europe Stuart Turner were among the speakers at the inaugural MSA Women in Motorsport seminar, which took place in Birmingham last month. Almost 100 delegates attended the event, which focused on subjects as diverse as safety equipment, personal effectiveness, managing conflict, communication and the media. In addition, FIA Women & Motor Sport Commission President and 1982 Vice World Rally Champion Michele Mouton gave a video address, recalling her time in the sport and underlining her support for the work of the MSA Group. Group member and MSA Race, Speed & Kart Executive Cheryl Lynch said: “It was a really insightful event and all of the delegates gave positive feedback. We plan to make the seminar a bi-annual occurrence, and we are also currently formulat- ing plans for International Women’s Day, which we will announce in due course.”

AASE students top Motorsport News list of drivers to watch in 2011

MSA Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) students Matt Parry and Nick Cristofaro were ranked first and second in a Motorsport News list of ‘The 50 drivers who will hit the headlines in 2011’. Reigning Super One British Junior Rotax champion Parry, 16, will contest the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain this season, while Cristofaro, 17, is set to tackle the Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship. Parry said: “It’s a great honour to have been recognised in such a way by Mo- torsport News, and being listed as number one is a nice way to put a seal on my karting career. I applied for the AASE programme to gain a better understanding of sports science and human performance, and because I want a professional career in motor sport. I’ve enjoyed it immensely so far and have learnt a great deal that has helped me to achieve better results in my racing.” Parry and Cristofaro were not the only MSA Academy drivers to make the list; An- thony Whorton-Eales, Team UK member John MacCrone, and Dan O’Brien also figured in MN’s listing.
