3 Chairman's Chatter

Great to get our first NSCC organised event under our belt last Sunday – the Curborough double lapper. A full entry with support from the TVR boys, who turned out in force, and some familiar faces from nearer to home.

The weather smiled on us and a good day was had by all with some PB's I'm sure. There were some close fought battles among the classes, not least with the single seaters where Steve Miles emerged victorious and claimed FTD to boot. Hopefully there will be a full report from someone to fill in the details as I wasn't able to stay all day and apologies if I missed having a word. I did take a few photos which I'll send to Andrew Warren for the website when I get a chance.

Having waited until July for Curborough we had two 'events' in one week when on the Wednesday evening following we had a visit to Simon Hadfield's clas- sic car operation at Shepshed. This was a long standing invitation through our president, Vi Selby, who has known Simon for many years in her capacity as a grid marshal at Mallory, Donington etc. and was first mooted when Simon was our guest speaker at the awards a couple of years ago. Numbers were limited to twenty and first refusal was given to marshals with the other places quickly filled by some of the committee and other locally based members – sorry if you missed out.

It was a fascinating couple of hours as Simon showed us around, explaining the ins and outs of the various cars in the workshops and added a few well chosen anecdotes from his 30 year involvement in the classic racing car scene. Lola T70's, F1, F5000, D-Type, 250F, F3, Sport 2000...... they were all there.

Entries for Thoresby are progressing nicely but we have MIRA before that so please get your entries in if you haven't already and please get some copy to Paul of your Championship exploits.

Sorry, a bit rushed this month so increased the font to fill the page!

Hopefully see you at MIRA

So another month has passed and for many of you this will be second issue you will have received by email. Hopefully this method of delivery is working fine for those of you who opted to receive Spin Off this way. It certainly saves the club a few precious pennies and me a shed load of printing time and paper. The first of the Nottingham Sports Car Club run events happened on July 10 th and we managed to buck the ever common trend amongst many clubs of poorly attended events and had a full entry for the tradi- tional double lap event. Well supported by NSCC entries and over 25 entries from the TVR Speed Championship! the surplus from the event will certainly help towards replenishing the Club deposit account. A full account of the Curborough event can be found elsewhere in this issue. Our next event is at MIRA near Nuneaton. A superb facility with very fast flowing corners it reminds me very much of Hethel; the Lotus test facility in Norfolk. Both have smooth wide surfaces, technical bits, and really, really fast bits!! The only downside for some, is that MIRA will only run on a Sprint on a Saturday. Don’t let this put you off. It has a fairly relaxed start in that entry to the circuit is not until 8.00am. To all you competitors who attend the NSCC Championship rounds please try and find the time to put a few words in an email to me or handwritten letter. It doesn’t matter if it’s a general account of the days proceedings or an account of your own endeavors; everything is wel- come to publish in Spin Off. So come on, let’s have your reports please. Thoresby Park is only around the corner now and the finale to our Championship season. If you’ve never been, make the effort. Whether it’s for both the Saturday and Sunday events or just one of them, get your entries in to Roger. Don’t forget the Saturday evening social at Pelethorpe Village Hall. A hot meal, an onsite bar and a chance to catch up on the days proceedings. Keep a watch out on the club website for updates, Spin Offs and new photos from our events; our new webmaster is doing a sterling job.

EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 50

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.

With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.

Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags.

Then try 50-lb potato bags and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.)

After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.

Subject: BARC Mids Curborough Sprint

Hi All, As an 'Invited Club' to our sprints please can I remind you of our Curborough Sprint on Saturday 13th August which is urgently in need of more entries. Please can you remind your members of the date. I have attached the Regs and Entry Form to enable you to pass them on. I really do not want to have to cancel this event as well as our May Sprint so please do your best to persuade your members to enter. There is also the Team Challenge included in this event, with a separate award, and we have seen some very unusual names for these teams. As well as trying to run our events efficiently we hope everyone has a fun day. The camera competition for children under 14 years is also held at all of our sprints.

I look forward to receiving entries from your members.

Just putting pen to paper after watching the GP at Silverstone. My word - it’s a very grand place now and very different from when the NSCC used to race there in the 1960s. In those days it was just a tarmac strip round the peri- track of the old WWII airfield plus the diagonal created from one of the three earlier runways used as the back straight of the shorter Club Circuit – I see they have incorporated this into in the new GP circuit now and called it Wel- lington, no doubt in memory of the bombers that used to land there once. One problem with this old club straight was that is was smooth tarmac laid for an adequate width for cars but then rough surface on the sides as the original runway was much wider – this could cause problems if cars went off and dropped down the small “step” to the old surface.

Will the elders of the Club please forgive me if I just repeat for the benefit of newer members a couple more historic snipetts. If my memory serves me cor- rectly, 2012 will mark the 50th anniversary of the NSCC contracting with the then owner, Jimmy Brown, to run all the Bank Holiday race meetings at the venue - a situation that continued for about 10 years before we lost control. Ken Cragg and Keith Douglas were the main negotiators on the Club’s behalf and we shouldn’t forget that Keith (who was a contemporary and in some ways a rival to ) ran the GP TV commentary with former F1 driver Tony Brooks when ITV held the franchise for a few years. Keith started his commentating career supporting Pat Stilley with the NSCC at Gamston which was at the same time as Murray Walker was “the announcer” at Mallory Park which at that time, prior to1956, was a motorcycle grass track.

Good to see that the Club’s spirit for innovation is still strong today, the event at MIRA is typical of the “something that is different and memorable”, that we have had a long tradition of providing for members and invitees. The Chair- man’s recent comments about Blyton park for next year are encouraging too.

Good luck to all and I’ll be back with a few more Club memories for the next issue.

Bruce Widdowson

Our first event this season went very well, everyone seemed to en- joy it and Ken our commentator made it interesting too. Thanks to you all, keeping the event running efficiently and safe as usual. Simon brought Stacey with him to do the data input, thanks both for saving the day. All the marshals received a copy of 'Pits' kindly donated by Jim Bam- ber its a very popular compilation of cartoons which never fails to bring a smile, thank you Jim - how do you do it! Twenty marshals and members had a very enjoyable evening last Wednesday at Simon Hadfields premises and had a very informative tour of his workshops seeing some interesting cars in various stages of restoration and others 'ready to race'. At anyone time this very un- assuming property in rural Leicestershire can hold literally millions and millions of pounds worth of customer vehicles, many of which are stored, serviced, repaired if necessary, set up, made race-ready and delivered to a circuit of the owners choosing be it in the UK or Europe ready for them to “arrive and drive”. You can see Simon in action at Mallory Park on August 7th. See you all at Mira.

Vi

All full for marshals at both MIRA and Thoresby Park now; thanks to all of you for volunteering. Fingers crossed for good weather.

14 A Cute Play on Words

These stickers were on sale at Curborough recently. A little bit of light hearted fun but I saw at least 50 leave the pad- dock office on July 10th at 50p each accompanied by chuck- les down the paddock road.

……...and whilst we are on the same theme;

Martin Parkes spotted this one on the back of a van recently and just had to have a snap shot of it!

Have you seen anything else like this or any funny stickers that are suitable for printing and putting a smile on the readers faces? Email them to me please if you have anything and pref- erably as a small file. Details on page 2

15 CURBOROUGH JULY 10th NSCC Double Lap Round 13

A misty start greeted me as I wheeled the 600cc beast from the garage on the Sunday morning in preparation for the early ride to Curborough for the first event that Nottingham Sports Car Club have hosted this year. Our tra- ditional earlier events at Curborough in May and June have been gradually dropped over the last couple of years owing to a lack of support from other Championships. It is these visiting Championships that we and other clubs rely on heavily to bolster the entries to make the events financially viable. The two earlier single lap events have struggled over a number of years and the decision had to made to drop these until such time that we feel they could be better supported and therefore stop our stroppy club treas- urer throwing his dolly out of the pram when the events don’t make a sur- plus for the club. The same cannot be said for our regular 2 lap July event at Curborough which has, for as long as I can remember, always been well supported by a growing number of Championships.

So it was, with the mount warmed up, I was then joined by my wife Kim who sat right behind me on what can only loosely be described as a pillion pad which has a seating area smaller than a child’s handkerchief! A pleas- ant ride to Curborough ensued with little or no traffic; hardly surprising con- sidering 99.5% of the UK population were still tucked up in bed! Only those mad enough to participate in motor sport or avid car-booters eager to catch the early deals, were out on the road before 6.00pm on the Sunday morn- ing. Signing on started promptly at 7.30am followed swiftly by scrutineering and the drivers briefing. A full paddock less one “no show” meant we had 69 drivers to get through 2 practice runs and 2 timed runs. Providing we had no incidents and hopefully, no rain either, we would have no trouble with this target. Due to the nature of Curborough as a sprint track only one car can be on the track at one time and each set of runs was to take 1 ¾ hours leaving only a small margin for incidents. We were fortunate that our Presi- dent Vi Selby was able to secure the services of Ken Walker; a quite fa- mous commentator in his own right and it might be worth mentioning that when, in 1984, Ken, then a lawyer, offered to beef up a press day at Long Eaton speedway stadium, he couldn’t have imagined that it was the first step towards him working at some of the worlds most famous motor racing circuits. Silverstone, , Le Mans, Hockenheim, Nurburgring, Spa Francorchamps, Sharm el Sheikh, SJA member Walker has commen- tated at them all. Monaco, Dubai, Malaysia, South Africa, Southern Califor- nia, they are just some of the places that the boy who grew up in the tight terraced streets of Derby’s Firs Estate in the 1950s, has recently found himself. There have also been some notable interviewees on the other end of Ken’s microphone, not least seven times F1 world champion, Michael

16 Schumacher and his then Ferrari teammate, Rubens Barrichello. Our only issue of the day arose around 8.00am when it became obvi- ous that our usual data input person was not going to make the event due to a personal problem. Under normal circumstances this would have meant that yours truly would have had to multi – task and be sec- retary of the meeting and run a laptop computer for 7 hours …….. not a good combination when you consider that I’m male and the wrong side of 50! One of our resident marshals, Simon Morris came to the rescue and redirected himself en route to Curborough to collect Stacey who gamely volunteered to give up her Sunday to help the club and fill in all the blanks on the spreadsheet and keep the competitors up to date with their times throughout the day. Simon was presented with the Presi- dents Bottle at the end of the day for his help. The Presidents bottle is presented by Vi Selby at each of our meetings to anyone we feel has provided a service or helped the club “above and beyond” for that event. Thanks to Simon from the committee and officials of NSCC. Anyway, on with the days proceedings……….. so from the famous to the not so famous names of the curborough paddock. A few changes on the day to the classes were necessary as last minute issues with the temperamental race cars as they were prepared for their day of action …. Richard and Jamie Yapp had to change to a Ren- ault Clio for the day and opted, with everyone elses’ approval to move to class 1B to have a little more competition. Dave West on the other hand had trouble with his Peugeot 106 in Class 1B and had to bring the ever popular and very familiar Mini Cooper to Curborough which unfor- tunately meant he had to migrate to Class 3A which meant he had no competition what so ever! Class SA was now down to 2 competitors, both NSCC championship registered in the shape of Gordon Gunn in the Peugeot Rallye and Reg Wild in the Renault 5. A close fought battle here with only just over a second separating these two at the end of the day; Gordon coming out on top with a best time of 74.02 and Reg with a 75.16. Richard Stephens, our 2010 Championship Winner, was all alone in Class 1A and posted a very respectable time of 73.06. Class 1B, which had lost Dave West, and gained the two Yapps, was well supported with 7 entries; most of whom were NSCC drivers. Regu- lar visitors, Bob Smith, John Allen, Tim Burrill, Tony & Peter Hart all had a great tussle throughout the day with less than 3 seconds separat- ing 1 st and 7 th . Class up Cars to over 5D - Racing 1 2 22 Classic Cars 1 cars were beautifully presented and are obviously well loved by their own- ers. Stewart Lobley took the honors in 2C with a time of 65.03, while Mathew Oakley took Class 2D with a time of 62.05, which incidentally was also 11 th fastest time of the day. Class 2E is the usual preserve of the Lotus Elise and Lotus derived cars, and today we had 4 but only one NSCC driver in the shape of Nigel Hinson in his Lotus 2 Eleven. Nigel had a close battle with eventual 1 st and 3 rd positions to finish 2 nd with a time of 65.51. Dave West was all alone in 3A with the Mini Cooper and the Modified Pro- duction Class of 3B saw the only NSCC driver in the shape of David Purdy in a class of 3 convincingly take the class win in his Opel Manta with a best time of 64.83. Still in the Modified Production Class but now up to class 3C we see the Ford Sierra XR4i being shared by Stephen Morrison and Barry Savage. Somehow Barry seemed to do better times during the morning practice runs and as a result handed the class win to Stephen who managed a time of 68.8. Into Class 3F we see the regular face of Nigel Cresswell in his Fisher Fury take a class win with a convincing time of 58.84 which was also 8 th fastest time of the day. Phillip Day and Ian Oldfield made up the 2 entries for the Sports Libre Class of 4B. Ian Oldfield struggling at times to keep the Ford Ka on the “black stuff” still managed to get the better of Phillip Day in the Fiat X19 and finished the day with a best time of 64.63. George Cole and Gary Thomas made up 2 of the 3 entries for the Racing Car Class of 5A. These cars have engines up to but over 1100cc and are supremely fast. George however seemed to have a torrid practice session with gear box problems. The same could not be said for Gary in the 1070cc powered Force PT who had a battle with non NSCC driver David Owen in an OMS. Gary finally taking the win with the 3 rd FTD time 52.76. Yet another Class win for an NSCC competitor; this time for Lee Griffiths who now shares the Tim Wilson OMS 25 car with the 1600cc engine. Lee dismissed most of the competition in Class 5C and posted a best time of 52.74. Many of you will have noticed the other sprint reports that get published in Spin Off are from Steve Miles, affectionately also referred to as Mole Rac- ing. Steve was at Curborough today with his new lighter Van Diemen cha- sis and engine. Steve took the Class win in 5D and also Fastest Time of the Day with a superb best time of 52.26. Congratulations Steve. Paul Marvin (secretary of the Meeting) 23 mole racing – with K2 Consultancy & TEW Engineering

2011 Event reports from British Sprint Championship rounds at Snetterton, Pembrey & Anglesey After an early start to the season there was a 6 week wait, due to opt- ing out of 2 rounds in as having been last year I felt the track was dangerous - 120mph in a parkland with trees and buildings in very close proximity. This meant that I had dropped to 10th in the British Sprint Championship. But now we faced 6 events in 3 consecutive weekends.

Snetterton The Norfolk circuit has had an extensive modification and we were playing on 1.75 laps of the 100 circuit. A new venue is always a challenge to learn and I have a number of videos that I would love to share but the circuit owners threaten a £25,000 fine if any onboard footage ends up on the internet. I pushed a bit too hard on one corner and had a high speed off on the Sunday meeting which caused floor and front wing damage, but at least I didn't stuff it in the barriers. Jonathan Toulmin's main race car failed again with electrical issues, so went home and came back later in the day with the spare, but this failed the next day also! Mike Musson had more transmission trouble and went home early and the event was won by Stewart Robb by 0.04 seconds from Colin Calder, but the following day Colin took top honours by a tenth on 76.21. Over the course of the week the times came down from 92 first practice to 82.16 on the end of the Sunday and to 80.91 on the Monday - that's practice for you. A 10th and 6th was another good result. But!, all weekend the car was ejecting large quantities of water from the header tank and clearly it had a problem, diagnostics at David Drew garages confirmed headgasket failure - due to running 2 laps of Castle Combe earlier in the season with no water in the engine after a pipe came off. With very limited time to the next event, with some welcome help from Ross Drew, we split the car, removed the floor, removed the

24 engine, took the head off, cleaned up, replaced the gasket and rebuilt the whole car in 3 evenings flat!

Pembrey The annual visit to south Wales was going to be tough with 7 V8's and 10 2 litre cars. At the end of the weekend however it had gone very smoothly, much better than expected. I finished 3rd in class each day behind the shared SBD works car - so it was clean sweep of the podium for SBD engined cars. Some excitement was caused in the paddock holding area when George Harris caught fire again, he hasn't done that since Lydden last year! No problems, the headgasket repair and rebuilt went perfectly in the dry weekend and the PB of 101.12 was demolished on the Saturday with a 98.88 in the run offs to leave me 7th overall. I was extremely pleased with this time and a few beers during the evening were con- sumed. This didn't affect the performance on Sunday on the same course, as after first timed run I posted a 96.94 and sat out the 2nd qualify run, preserving tyres and car. The run offs netted a buttock clenching, 96.80 for 6th. Result!

Anglesey International and National Circuit Sprints Now if only the weather was like this every race weekend - a crack- ing hot Saturday and a soaking track on the Sunday I'd be happy! The 2.1 international circuit is always a great challenge with some big speeds being reached on the back straight. Admittedly I was only doing 134mph compared to the top V8s at 186mph (300kph), but it is great fun to be ‘flat to the floor’ in corners/kinks at these speeds. The new datalogger is still difficult to get to grips with as you can see from the vast wealth of information available to you, but it will prove to be useful in finding why one run was better than another. The Saturday single lap of the full international circuit was notable last year for missing out on the run off by 0.01 seconds, but this year was slightly more comfortable (but only just) making the cut in 12th position but pushing out 3V8s in the progress, sorry Gra- ham! Mike Musson retired again with more transmission problems after installing new driveshafts and Jonathon still hadn't fixed either car. But improvements over the two runs dropped the time by 2.5 secs inside my PB to move me to 10th overall.

25 Terry Holmes, in the 3500cc Judd managed a storming new outright lap record some 6 seconds faster than my time. A great first national round win for Tegra racing shown here. Sundays forecast rain ap- peared at start of play and then eased as we packed up at the end of the day! The wet made qualification slightly easier as I do enjoy driving in the slippery conditions and only having 272bhp is not such a disadvantage as the bigger cars struggle to lay down all 600+ bhp. On board videos from the wet run off run can be found by searching YouTube for "moleracing, Anglesey, wet, 2011" Neil Lambert captured these great wet images and gives you an idea of the conditions. The SBD works car shared by Steve Broughton and Mark Smith was having a troubled day after Mark tapped the armco heavily on the first of the 2 qualification runs. Heavy duty hammering put the suspension vaguely straight and a cautious 2nd run enabled Mark and Steve to scrape into the top 12. My first run ( see video above) was on the limit of coming off and be- ing fast, and after the first 6 cars I was still leading, but after all 12 had run I was pushed back to 6th. On the second run, I made a bad start, understeered very deep at the right angled 'Rocket', had terminal understeer all round the hairpin and then to cap it all at the end of the first lap I couldn't stop and ran deep. At this point I thought it was such a bad lap I must be 5 seconds down at least and no chance of recovery, plus thought that a big crash was a high possibility on the second lap, so I decided to abort and coasted over the line and back into the holding area - to the amazement of my fellow sprinters. It turned out my lap split would have been better than the first run had I not coasted and came in! Rule 1, " never give up " Anyway, I finished 8th overall and this time Colin Calder won the run off to keep it tight at the top of the champi- onship. The next round is in Northern Ireland this coming weekend, typically this is also wet, so lets see...

BRAND NEW IPHONE / IPAD APP

A first for us at Veloce: a simultaneous publication of a book and an app! The Peugeot 205 GTI book is the 53rd title in the popular Essential Buyer's Guide series covering classic and sports cars and motorbikes. However, we are particularly proud of this new app – our 6th – as it fea- tures video footage of the author, Jon Blackburn, taking us around a typi- cal Peugeot 205 GTI, and telling us exactly where to look for problems. Here we have the best of both worlds: the book covers some aspects of car examination in more depth, while the facility for video and sound in the app makes the provision of another level of information very under- standable and entertaining. The app was made and filmed entirely in- house in our Dorchester-based workshop and studio. Device requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Re- quires iOS 4.0 or later.

29 A LESSON TO BE LEARNT

If you hadn’t already heard Stuart Bullas was killed whilst working on his yellow “frog eye” sprite in April. He was 3 times Champion in the Sprite class and still holds 5 records to date. He will probably be best remembered for his part in a Top Gear challenge at Prescott, with James May, where old and new cars were being compared. At the Smethwick Coroners Court yesterday (June 28 th ) it was heard that Mr. Bullas had been working on his car at his factory in Lye when it slipped from a supporting belt and fell on top of him. He was carrying out main- tenance work in preparation for his next event at Loton. The inquest was told that the vehicle was being held up solely by the belt, con- nected to a crane by a metal hook, despite 2 supporting A-frames being available nearby. His eldest Brother, Graham, said that he hoped the tragedy would convince anyone working on vehicles to take extra care to avoid similar accidents in the future. Black Country coroner Robin Balmain recorded a verdict of accidental death. Martin Parkes

*********************************************************************************************** A week to remember The re-launched National Motorsport Week has proved a huge success, with strong support from teams, venues and clubs, and an enthusiastic response from motor sport fans and the public. 31 As well as benefitting from the backing of the MSA, this year’s initiative was timed to coincide with the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the immediate run-up to the Santander Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone. This generated a substantial increase in activities and events, ranging from open days at M-Sport in Cumbria and Dunlop in Birmingham, to a plethora of novice taster days organised by MSA- registered motor clubs across the country. National Motorsport Week also achieved widespread media exposure, most notably when David Coulthard experienced several grass roots forms of motor sport for the BBC’s F1 programme; the feature was aired to more than three million viewers as part of the broadcaster’s European GP coverage. Other national media to carry National Motorsport Week stories included BBC Radio 5 Live, Daily Telegraph, Daily Mirror, The Sun, Autosport and Autocar. “We are delighted that National Motorsport Week is now starting to get the kind of mo- mentum and exposure both the sport and industry in this country deserve,” said Colin Hilton, Chief Executive of the MSA. “While it’s important for us to celebrate this coun- try’s ongoing success at the highest levels, National Motorsport Week is all about get- ting more people involved in the sport; that’s why these taster events set up by motor clubs to attract new members are so important.” ************************************************************************************************** Volunteer tributes As ever, tributes were paid to the 1,100-strong volunteer workforce that enables the British Grand Prix meeting to take place. In an open letter to the volunteers, Colin Hilton wrote: “I would like to thank everyone involved in the organisation of this year’s Grand Prix, for their dedication and commit- ment, not just at Silverstone but across the country throughout the year.” A free prize draw is always held to reward one of the loyal marshals for their efforts; this year’s winner was Andy Brown, a flag marshal at Luffield, who wins a trip to a European grand prix of his choice next year. ************************************************************************************************** Silverstone swaps horsepower for pedal power Hundreds of cyclists raised £500 for Help for Heroes by pedalling around Silverstone in the run-up to last weekend’s British Grand Prix. The ride was hosted by Silverstone Circuits and MGLive! as part of National Motorsport Week, with cyclists ranging from four- to 84-years old. “We strongly support the National Motorsport Week initiative and wanted to get behind the campaign by offering motor sport fans the opportunity to get onto the circuit,” said Richard Phillips, Managing Director of Silverstone. Further north, Croft also took full advantage of National Motorsport Week to raise funds for a local hospice by offering passenger rides around the track. Such was the demand that the circuit had to open its gates much earlier than planned, with fans travelling from across the country.

32 Date announced for 2012 Following the great success of this year’s National Motorsport Week, the Motor Sports Association (MSA) and Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) have con- firmed that next year’s National Motorsport Week will run from Saturday 30 June to Sunday 8 July 2012. This year’s initiative generated a massive increase in activities and it is hoped that National Motorsport Week 2012 will again coincide with the Goodwood Festival of Speed and take place during the immediate build up to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, provisionally scheduled for Sunday 15 July. “This year’s National Motorsport Week has exceeded everyone’s expectations,” says Colin Hilton, MSA Chief Executive. “We have celebrated the UK’s world- leading motor sport industry, we have drawn attention to less well-publicised parts of the sport and we have helped to attract new recruits to our clubs and events. We now need to build on this and we believe that the early announcement of next year’s dates will give everyone a better chance of getting involved.” *********************************************************************************************** Siblings shine light on motor sport engineering Sisters Leena and Teena Gade, two of the technical minds behind Audi’s and Mini’s motor sport programmes, used National Motorsport Week to highlight engineering careers in the sport. Leena, 35, (pictured left), engineered this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours-winning Audi R18 TDI (see forthcoming MSA magazine, autumn 2011), while Teena, 31, (right), engineers Kris Meeke’s Mini John Cooper Works WRC in the FIA World Rally Championship. The pair brought their cars together at the Goodwood Festival of Speed hoping to inspire the next generation of world-class motor sport engineers. *********************************************************************************************** Female engineers get hands-on experience thanks to NMW and MSV Three female engineering students from Mid Cheshire College spent a day working on single-seaters, rally cars and BMW M3s at as part of MotorSport Vi- sion’s National Motorsport Week activities. Louise Doyle, Samantha Royle and Carol Spencer were supervised by Oulton Park’s Engineering Team Leader, Sophy Owen. Doyle said: “I had a fantastic day at Oulton Park on Friday and was given a fabulous insight into the world of motorsport. The staff were friendly and made the day very relaxed, so we were not afraid to ask more questions.” MSV also ran a motor sport photography masterclass, hosted by former Renault MSA Young Motor Sport Photographer of the Year, Drew Gibson. “It’s been a very interesting day,” said Gibson. “It’s been good to speak to people with an interest in photography and to share my knowledge and experience to help them learn more things about taking photos.” 33 BARC to run MSA British Hill Climb and Leaders Championships The British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) will take over from Speed Championships Ltd as the organiser of the MSA British Hill Climb and Leaders Championships from next year. BARC will run the Championships for at least five years from 2012. “We are delighted to have been given this opportunity,” said BARC Chief Executive Dennis Carter. “When Tony Fletcher of Speed Championships first suggested that we should apply to run the Championships when he decided to retire, we were flattered to say the least. Tony has done a good job in keeping the Championships strong and healthy and will be a hard act to follow.” MSA General Secretary, Rob Jones, also paid tribute to Fletcher: “We thank Tony for his great contribution to the Championships’ ongoing success, and would like it noted that he has been involved in their organisation for over 50 years.” **************************************************************************************************** Marshals in the spotlight BBC TV pointed the cameras at the essential role of volunteer marshals during its cover- age of qualifying for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone last weekend. Pitlane reporter Ted Kravitz visited a round of the MSA British Touring Car Champion- ship at Thruxton earlier this year to don the orange overalls. His experiences of the day made a great entertaining feature and demonstrated just what a valuable job the mar- shals do at the thousands of events up and down the country every year. The feature was set up as part of the Go Motorsport campaign which is designed to get more people involved in the sport as competitors, spectators or volunteers. The British Motorsport Marshals Club reported more than 5,000 visits to its website as a result of the programme and 300 enquiries for marshalling taster days. The story can be viewed online at http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=yczVhGVe6Eo **************************************************************************************************** MSA Licensed Officials – Renewal notes 2012 The MSA would like to apologise to all Licensed Officials for the errors that crept into the Officials’ Licence Renewal notes 2012 that were recently circulated. This was due to a printing corruption and a corrected version will be available on the MSA website shortly. **************************************************************************************************** F3 and GP3 success for Team UK racers Lewis Williamson scored his maiden GP3 win at Silverstone during the British Grand Prix weekend, with Team UK graduate Alexander Sims taking the championship lead following a pair of podiums. and Jack Harvey secured their first Cooper Tires British F3 Interna- tional Series wins at Brands Hatch and the Nürburgring respectively, while Tom Blom- qvist took his first German F3 victory at Zolder in Belgium.
