3 In the absence of a Chairmans Report this month I’ve hijacked his page to remind all the membership that we are looki ng for nomina- tions for the Wonky Trophy and the Brian Tustain Award which are both given out at the AGM in November.

RETURN OF 2010 AWARDS Can we ask that any award winners from 2010 make con- tact with Keith Graham as soon as possible (details at the back of Spin Off) to make arrangements for the re- turn of their silverware please.

The Committee are also looking for nominations from the membership for the following awards:-

The Wonky Trophy : this exactly what it is; a wonky trophy. We need the mem- bership to suggest for the committee’s consideration, any person(s) who might deserve this award. The crite- ria is fairly straightforward. Any form of mishap that makes us smile or just plain split our sides! It can be a driver, marshal, official almost anyone providing they are a member of NSCC.

The Brian Tustain Award : The Brian Tustain Award is a long standing award within NSCC and again is open to be awarded to any NSCC member. The criteria here is fairly simple as well in that it is awarded for meritorious action or work that has benefited the club.

Would you please help us by sending any nominations you feel suitable to the Chairman in the first instance either by post or email. (details on page 27)

Editors Mutterings

This has to be one of the “smallest” editions of Spin Off I’ve created in the last year or so that I’ve been publishing it. Your contributions really do count and I urge you all to let me have any creative writings you are prepared to have published. My thanks to all those who have gone to the trouble of sending theirs to me but there has definitely been an overall shortage of event reports this year. Please check out page 18 of Spin Off this month as there is the Com- mittee Application form if any of you are interested in joining the com- mittee at this years AGM. Your help in running the Club is always wel- comed. If you want an informal chat beforehand, give Roger Carrington a call and he can brief you on what might be involved. Winter Paddocks kick off again this month and are held on the last Fri- day in each month barring November where we meet at the AGM. See page 19 for further details. Your hard working Competition Secretary Steve Brown has been hard at it once again toiling away with the 2012 Championship event invita- tions and has managed to secure you with a potential 22 event champi- onship for you. Mind you, there’s a heck of a choice on April 15th! Blyton Park Raceway in Lincolnshire has finally appeared on the calen- dar. You may remember me rambling on about the potential for this circuit over the last 18 months or so. The circuit owners have now spent a fortune on having a very large proportion of the circuit completely re- surfaced. Another plus point for Blyton is that it can safely be run in ei- ther direction. Westfield Sports Car Club have secured a weekend in July to which we have accepted an invitation for both days to be part of the NSCC Championship. I urge you to go along, it should be a good weekend, the Westfield boys always put on a good event. It remains to be seen however if they can generate enough interest and entries to make it a viable proposition. We’ll have to wait and see.

Well, I haven’t done an event write up for some time, my job has got hellishly busy and every time I get to a computer, I’m either knackered or have something that I get paid to do to get done. Some would say (Ben and Mike for example) that the fact I have been beaten in my own car by someone else (Ben and Mike for example ) for the last four events might suggest that I am a bad sport but I hold myself up to be a sportsman of great honour and would not allow myself to behave so dishonourably. (Did some- one cough?). This Thoresby was to be the last time that I drove my cute but now scruffy Bond Equipe in competition before seeking to sell it and fund the new project. The car has had twin Weber carburet- tors attached since Thoresby 2010 and I was expecting it to be faster. For all of these reasons I have decided to scribe a write up. For Ben, my shared driver and mortal enemy in the Bond, it was his first time at Thoresby too and as he had won every sprint so far this year (he is an incredibly smooth driver and I hate him for it), it was looking good for him to complete the season unbeaten. Ben is professionally suspicious so he was waiting for me to knobble him at any stage, but out of respect for his novice status I drove first on Saturday but we swapped the order on Sunday. I had the weather on my side on Saturday as Ben seemed to have the damper track on at least one occasion. But all of this is a mere bagatelle, now Ben is convinced that I did this with the con- viction of Mother Theresa, but I swear I didn’t mean to leave my helmet in the passenger foot well on driver changeover, he had a nasty surprise at Kiosk and backed out of the rest of the lap. As for the times, well with a 40 year old car which seems to be a test bed for any trainee scrutineer, we were not expecting to do great, but people shouldn’t be quick to judge. The fact is that the gearing is ideally suited to Thoresby and the car is very light in- deed and 110bhp in that package can be extremely effective. Certainly one wag suggested that we shouldn’t worry too much about travelling fast in “that thing”. He wasn’t driving but then we did beat the car on the Saturday that he had come along to support. Unwise words!! Ben’s best time was 60.68 seconds and mine was 58.87, so I 9 won. Now I still feel that we work as a team Ben and I, so if I can help in anyway, looking at the times and analysing the performance, I endeavoured to help Ben find where he was losing out, but Ben in- sists that my advice just sounded like “you’re rubbish and I am bet- ter”. There is no helping some people. The Bond finished 49 th out of 71 cars which I think is an excellent performance. Saturday night was spent at Perlethorpe banqueting and beveraging. Ben and I teamed up with Paul and Owen Darch and Martin Harrison in their mobile man shed, we had a most entertaining evening which probably involved too much drink and for my part, too much giggling uncontrollably. The night was chilly but I remained horizontal for all of it and asleep for part of it. Two Paracetamols and a fry up sorted us for Sunday, Ben was back on the trail, hunting down the seconds which would put him in front of me, the car started very much like on the previous day, sounding sick off the line, it took two runs to clear it. But when it started firing on all four cylinders, it felt quick. I couldn’t equal my PB from the previous day, just missing out on 59.22 seconds. Ben managed 61.38 seconds. The drama was yet to unfurl though, on my final run, I nailed the first half of the track only to come out of the first chicane faced with a red flag. I awaited my rerun, adrenalin still at the max; it was go- ing to be the last run of the day and for me in the Bond ever. 6500 revs dropped and the semi slicks bit, the universal joint imploded so no rerun. This is the first time in four years that the little car has been terminally broke but if you imagine that the universal joint is used to pottering around on a 60bhp Triumph Herald, four years of burn ups on the back of a 90+bhp sprint car is not bad. Now what I hadn’t realised was that Ben had an assailable lead in the championship tables, he had won all three of the previous sprints, but amazingly, I made enough time up at Thoresby to put me ahead of him in three out of the four championships. RESULT!! I love Thoresby, I feel like I am some 1970s rally car doing the RAC rally at Clumber Park and the sensation is magical for me. Next year I hope to be competing in my TR7V8 which will be even more like competing in those seventies rallies. I need to up the power a bit and the suspension is all over the place at the moment but, all being well, this will happen. As for this year’s competitors, I have to say that I always enjoy catching up with David Holden and his fantastic Alpine

10 A110, Tony Hart’s Renault 5 is simply stunning, Russell Douglas’ Alfa had electrical problems but was gorgeous, Gordon Peters takes the prize for the most impressive drift at Fiveways, Rodney Ellis’ Lotus Elan is a deserved winner of the classic trophy, Ivan Russell’s amazing Anglia, Stephen and Barry’s XR4i sounded great up to the rise esses and the lovely TVR Vixen which didn’t make it through Saturday but looked very exciting. The single seaters have to be the least appropriate cars for the task, but what speeds they attain. As ever, I want to thank the organisers for the great effort they put in to making Thoresby the event that I look forward to the most each year, to the Darch’s and Monsieur Harrison for the en- tertainment on Saturday night and to Ben who adds a competi- tive edge to the weekend that everyone seems to thrive on al- though I just want to reiterate, I didn’t leave the helmet in the foot well on purpose. 11 Nottingham Sports Car Club AGM and Awards Presentation Its that time of year once again where the officers and com- mittee of Nottingham Sports Car Club call upon the member- ship and Life members of the club to join us for the annual AGM and Awards Presentation. I hope all the award winners will endeavour to be at the presentation dinner. Everyone in the Top Ten of the main Championship gets an award so once the Provisional Results are declared Final then the awards and finishing places will be fixed.

Our guest speaker this year is Tony Southgate. Tony South- gate is one of Britain’s foremost racing car designers, with a fantastic ‘back catalogue’ of success. He has produced win- ning cars for F1, the Le Mans 24 hours, Can-Am and the In- dianapolis 500. He has designed for the great names in mo- tor sport: Ferrari, Jaguar, BRM, Lola, Audi – and worked with the greatest drivers of the era. Tony will join us as our guest speaker and talk about his re- markable career. He started out in the early days of Lola, alongside the founder, Eric Broadley. He joined Dan Gurney’s Eagle team in California, achieving ultimate success as the designer of the Indy winning AAR Eagle. His story promises to be a fascinating insider tour of motor sport at the top level, including BRM, the formation of Shadow, and then Ar- rows, with Jackie Oliver. Later came the Ford RS200 Group B rally car, the revered Le Mans XJR ‘Silk Cut’ cars of the Tom Walkinshaw days and the origination of the Audi R8 Le Mans programme. Our annual Awards Lunch is a great opportunity to hear about a golden period for motor sport – at first hand. The club website should have a downloadable application form for the AGM and meal, alternatively contact me (Paul Marvin, details at the back of Spin Off) and I’ll post you one.

13 Marshals Page

The season will be winding down now for some of you (it didn't even start for me!) but the brave rally marshals will still be busy. I will see you at the Mallory Park Boxing Day meeting and will be back to normal next season. Your availability forms will be with you soon and hopefully you will sup- port the Club again next season. Do try to attend the AGM and Dinner on 27th November, your input, ei- ther suggestions or criticism are always welcome, and are a great bene- fit to the Club. Our speaker this year is Tony Southgate and I am sure his talk will be of great interest to us. It would be great to see some of you at our Winter Paddock if distance isn't a problem, same venue just a social gathering and the food is good too. See you there. Vi

14 mole racing – with K2 Consultancy & TEW Engineering

Kames, plus Odiham Chinook Sprint and Brighton National Speed Trials

The calculations had been done as to how I could fare after this final weekend of the British Championship at Kames . Currently 6 th , anywhere from 5 th to 10 th was a possible outcome, however as entries were confirmed this was more likely to be 7 th , as Ross Napier in the V8 F1Cosworth Gould had two scores to add, and I was only going to increase my score if I made 7 th or higher. I was relying on weather flukes or retirements to increase my position! Kames is located about 20 miles south of Glasgow in Ayrshire. It is fairly easy to get to – unless the road is closed for 2 weeks for resurfacing! After a laborious inland trip we all arrived to be greeted by friendly competitors helping shift trailers but also wel- comed by 10,000 hungry Scottish midges. Despite expedition strength “jungle fever repellent” these little ba$t@rd$ started slowly and built up to a crescendo of extreme biting at 10pm, at which point the trailer was bolted shut and mass cull started. With the aid of the head torch and a squashing cloth, 20 minutes later all was well with the world and a good nights sleep was had. At signing on in the morning, the officials had provided a communal midge repellent for all officials and competitors, I think it was just us softy southerners taking them up on it! The circuit is small, narrow and has no run off, but by the time you have done nearly three laps each run and 6 runs/day – anticlockwise Saturday and clockwise Sunday, you’d had plenty of track of track time. If you had no damage, that was a bonus. There were only 14 British contenders, so qualifying wasn’t likely to be a problem, so I stayed on the practice tyres all day until the run off. Car management was 100% handed over to Chris Dickenson and Jonny Butler who joined me for the weekend for this first time since Ingliston in 2010. They did a superb job and it was so nice to come back from a run, concentrate on making notes and looking at the datalogger while the car was swiftly prepared for the next run. The weekend played out as expected, no dramas or significant accidents for me and a 7th with an extra point for breaking the old 2 litre record and the same position again on Sunday, but for the first time this season, we finished ahead of the works SBD car driven by Mark Smith. Ross did the business as expected and this meant I finished 7 th overall in the 2011 British Sprint Championship. A great result considering the 10 V8’s in contention plus significantly more expensive 2 litre cars. Generally the new car combination with the SBD duratec has been 2-4 seconds faster everywhere this season! Mike Musson had suspension failure but didn’t hit anything hard, and pushed his three wheeler back into the trailer for another day. Stewart Robb jnr won both days but Snr took the British title for the first time and was warmly applauded as he drove back into the paddock.

Chinook Sprint – RAF Odiham An end of season ‘play’ at a new venue. Martin Puckles had sold his Formula Ford since Kames and was ‘debuting’ a new bike engined lightweight, powerful Jedi. Also having a first run in a new car was Mike Musson, but further north at Aintree. For some £50k or so, he had purchased an extremely powerful V8 Judd 4000cc Pilbeam – how does 1,440bhp/tonne grab you as a power to weight ratio! Pre event I had done my best to remember exactly what way the course went, so I did- n’t waste valuable track time thinking right or left at each bend. This appeared to pay

15 off, as after first practice I had posted the fastest time of anyone at 1:28.58, Steve Broughton, driving Bill Gouldthorpe’s new ex SBD works car was next behind on 1:30.09 and quite a few others were ‘up my chuff’. Second practice saw commitment at a few keys areas shave 3 further seconds off but the others also similarly reduced the time. But this was only practice. Steve had an incident in Bills car, coming in with a cone buried in the sidepod and the front wings smashed off. All hands to the deck and we had it repaired in time for the next run. I was confident to leave my best tyres off for the first of 3 timed runs – mistake! It was a scary 1st timed run, - as you can see from the new 1080HD camera mounted out to the side with a great new camera angle. YouTube video found by searching “moleracing Odi- ham”. But I was pleased to be leading the field with a time of 1:20.67 with Steve B chas- ing just 2.5 secs behind and Piers Thynne, who mainly concentrates on the ‘hills’ with a 2 litre Dallara some 5 seconds back. Lunch time we walked the 3km long course and had a few plans and theories to put into practice. On my second run, with best tyres on, this was going well, as from the onboard video I can see that I was 2 seconds faster at the point I had the accident……… I took a different, faster line into one corner and as a result I went over an aircraft landing light at around 120mph and caused the rear pushrod to collapse. At the next corner, braking with one front wheel some 6” in the air was problematic, as from my view point I couldn’t see this and hadn’t realised as it steered fine with just one wheel in a straight line. As I en- tered the corner, I tried steering and braking for the first time, my trouser airbag de- ployed and after some serious cadence braking, got it stopped and under control. But ‘game over’ for the day. I was still leading Steve from Piers despite this after 2 nd timed runs, but couldn’t hold piers off on the 3 rd final run and he went 4 tenths quicker for his first ever Fastest Time of Day. Top bloke!, but he felt embarrassed for watching my onboard video so many times, but hey, he got his car to the end of the meeting faster than me, and that’s what its all about. Martin had a great day enthusiastically extolling the virtues of the car and sheer accelera- tion to come 7 th overall. Mike Musson, at Aintree however had the wrong gears in and de- spite torrential rain couldn’t go faster than 156mph, but then crashed on his final run to give himself some winter repair work on his new toy!

Brighton National Speed Trials The finish to the season, at the world’s oldest motorsport event, the Brighton National Speed Trials. First run in 1905 to celebrate the removal of the man that had to walk in front of the motor car waving a red flag and the 2mph public speed limit. Brighton council laid the first tarmac in the town for the purpose of running the event and can you imagine the amazement of the crowds as the winning car achieved 97mph over the finish line! You do not get a lot of track time for your entry, but it is a great day, a superb range of machines in the 200 odd car and bike line up, good crowds and a nice historical end of season outing. Bill was here again, and it was this event last year I bought his old car as he had decided to give up racing. Within 4 weeks of me driving his car away, he had bought another, then another and was in good form today after Steve Broughton had repaired it in the intervening few days since Odiham. Apparently he had just been told what time Bill was going to beat me by! There was no class competition today, but qualification for the top 6 run off was the tar- get. The one and only practice run was quite acceptable at equal 3 rd fastest car and 10.89 seconds for the ¼ mile and 131mph over the line. This run was recorded on the new full HD camera and is posted on youtube (search moleracing Brighton). It was tight however and only a few tenths separated me from the top spot. Ably assisted by Den Pickett, we stripped the second elements of the car to minimise drag and then

16 took off the camera, taped all the panel seams, put even more pressure in the front tyres (35psi) and dropped the rears to 13psi. The car was already running without a diffuser to save 6kgs so that was the limit of preparation, it was now down to me! The launch seemed acceptable but at 2.01secs took 2 hundredths longer to reach the 64ft point, all the gear changes were slick and swift and I managed 134mph over the line and took a few tenths off at 10.65 seconds. However, 0.05 quicker than me was Mike Lee running a 230bhp/330kg Force – with all wings stripped off and ahead of him by 0.01seconds was Rodney Thorne with a 5 litre V8 Pilbeam who took the win. Amazingly we were all measured at 134mph over the line. As always, we like to have an excuse lined up, and although it was spitting with rain as I drew up to the line, I don’t think I can blame the rain for those 6 hundredths! The rest of the day got wetter and wetter and although I made the top 6 run off, I took the run but only came 3 rd again, with the most scary moment of the whole sea- son when the back of the car snaked violently at around 110mph, pointing me towards the steel arches only 10m away and the old ‘trouser air bag’ deployed again I can tell you! But we cruised safely over the line and lived to see another season! An engine upgrade to 290bhp has been commissioned with SBD for 2012 and also a weight reduction programme to hopefully get me in the sub 400kg bracket. Thanks to K2 Consultancy and TEW Engineering for the valuable support this season. I hope these reports have conveyed some of the fun and excitement we have had this year and look forward to writing and sharing with you again in 2012. Steve

In Memorium With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed last week. Larry LaPrise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Cokey", died peacefully at age 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in. And then the trouble started.

I am a Nobody. Nobody is Perfect. Therefore I am Perfect.

FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS! Except that one where you're naked in church.

20 NSCC Final Round – Thoresby Park We had glorious weather for the start of setting out on Thursday 15th Sept and it was fingers crossed that it would hold out till the weekend. As Roger said in his Chairman’s Chatter last month, “the outcome of the NSCC Championship would not be decided till Sun- day.” Potential winner Gary was at Shelsley along with me on the Saturday for a “Midland Speed Championship” round and it was look- ing as if we were going to get a dry hillclimb but just before the 1st timed run after lunch the heavens opened and we were presented with a lovely wet track for the afternoon runs. The track eventually dried and Gary finished 2nd in class with a time of 28.06s which was 1.02s behind the class winner who got BTD! I finished 3rd in class, a massive 2.5 seconds behind my class winner!! Anyway back to Thoresby, I was told that weather had been good on Saturday and Sunday was looking likewise, Gordon Gunn took the honours in class SA with 61.38s achieved on his 2nd run, Andrew Rollason finish 3rd in his KA and Reg Wild 4th in the Renault 5. Rod- ney Ellis came 2nd in his Elan in Class SB and Owen Darch won Class SC in his Subaru Impreza. Rich Stevens finished 2nd in class 1A in his Peugeot 106 Rallye and Robert Smith won class 1B in his Peugeot 205 GTi. Peter Hart in the Renault Clio Williams and Tim Burrill in his shared 205 GTi finished joint 2nd with a time of 56s and both achieved this time on their second runs! 4th was John Allen in another 205 GTi whilst Neil Bill- ingham came 6th in an Opel Manta GTE. Next came my class 2A where Rich Abraham in his “cable-tied” pre- pared Westfield had continued his second successful season by set- ting a new class record on Sat with 49.73s and then followed that on Sunday by wiping off another 0.89s! I could only manage 5th with 53.04s closely followed by John Clarke with a 53.08.

21 Class 3B had the most number of NSCC competitors of the day with a total of 6. Winner was Tony Hart in his Renault Clio Williams with 50.8s achieved on his first run, 2nd was Dave Purdy in his Manta, Andrew Warren in his Saxo finished 5th with 59.22 closely followed by Calvin Andrew in the faithful Bond Equip with 59.22 beating his driving part- ner Ben Stanbridge by 2.16s who came 8th and were split by Russell Douglas in his nice Alfa Romeo Givlia Sport. Thoresby was the last out- ing for the Bond in the hands of Calvin and next season we should see (and hear) Calvin in a TR8! I think Mike Mayfield was expressing an in- terest in buying the Bond so hopefully it will still be around next year. Nigel Cresswell showed them Westfield boys how to drive by winning Class 3F in his Fisher Fury. George Cole in his Terrapin Mk1 finished 6th in class 5A and there could have been an upset in this class when Gary Thomas had brake failure on his practice run. Luckily no car dam- age was done and upon investigation it was found a flexible brake pipe had rubbed through resulting in a total loss of middle pedal, good job this didn’t happen on Saturday at Shelsley! With the help of David Hunter and other competitors a new flexible brake pipe was fitted, brakes bled and Gary finished the day with a class win, FTD, Notting- ham Champion for the 4th time and the Harry Driver trophy.....not bad eh! Rich Abraham finished 2nd and Tony Hart finished 3rd. Rich also finished runner up in the “Harry Driver” championship and won the nov- ice award, I managed to hang on to 10th and newcomer John Clarke fin- ished 11th despite having green wheels! Thanks to all the marshals who throughout the year have done such a great job as always. Thanks also to the organisers who have made it an- other successful season for NSCC. Don’t know what my plans are for next year but will try and make it to some winter paddocks this year and will see you at the awards bash in November.

22 MSA News ISSUE 17 : October 2011 MSA flies the flag at Party Conferences as David Cameron praises UK motor sport The Motor Sports Association was again present at each of the three main political party conferences this year to raise the profile of motor sport and engage with MPs, Councillors, party members and other or- ganisations. And the MSA’s campaign was further boosted this week when David Cameron spe- cifically picked out this country’s success within Formula 1 in his key note speech to the Conference. “Do you watch ?” said the Prime Minister on Wednesday. “Well whether it’s the German Michael Schumacher, the Australian or the Brazilian Rubens Barrichello, they all have one thing in common – they drive cars built right here in Britain.” Earlier in the week a fringe meeting had been held in Manchester to discuss how participation in sport can be stimulated by a reduction in government regulation and how this can in turn lead to wider benefits, both social and economic. Chaired by respected pundit Tony Jardine, the panel comprised Ben Taylor, the MSA’s new Director of Development and Communications (see page 8), Andy Reed, Chairman of the Sport and Recreation Alliance, Gus Lewis, Head of Legal and Government Affairs for the Royal Yachting Association and Ben Wallace, Con- servative MP for Wyre and Preston North. The previous week, former Sports Minis- ter Richard Caborn had joined the panel for a similar meeting with Labour in Liver- pool. “We were delighted with the turnout for our meetings,” said Taylor. “Not only did we have a number of Lords and MPs in attendance, but we also had representatives from organisations such as Sky, Football Foundation, Lawn Tennis Association, Rugby Football Union and Formula One Teams Association. “Perhaps the most significant demonstration of the progress that the MSA is making with getting its message to the top is that the Prime Minister this week cited motor sport as a shining example of the new economy he wants to build in Britain. “The more that we can get motor sport recognised for its contribution both to the industrial and sporting well-being of the country, the better our chances of highlight- ing other important campaigns such as continued forest access and closed road motor sport.” ********************************************************************************************** National Motorsport Week to start with Goodwood and end with Grand Prix Next year’s National Motorsport Week (30 June to 8 July) will feature two of the

23 most popular events on the UK motor sport calendar: the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Santander British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The grand prix dates were recently confirmed as 6-8 July 2012, while The Earl of March, patron of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, has announced that the world’s largest celebration of motoring culture is provisionally scheduled to take place over the weekend of 29 June to 1 July. “While these two high profile events will help us to put the spotlight on the UK’s world- leading achievements, it’s essential that we maximise the opportunity to engage with more people and encourage them to get involved,” said MSA Chief Executive Colin Hilton. “Whether it’s as a competitor at grass roots level, an active member of a local motor club, or a trackside volunteer, motor sport has so much to offer. There are many opportunities in many different disciplines for those inspired and excited by these major events, and that’s what National Motorsport Week is all about.” National Motorsport Week 2012 will build on the great success of this year’s initiative, which shone a spotlight on motor sport with a range of activities, from open days at some of the country’s top teams to novice taster days organised by motor clubs throughout the country (see MSA News July 2011 and MSA magazine autumn 2011). ************************************************************************************************** John Wood receives top MSA accolade The MSA has bestowed upon John Wood the title of Officiel d’Honneur, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to UK motor sport. John has been an MSA Steward for 10 years, and recently retired as an MSA Forestry Liaison Officer after 12 years of service. He is also commended for his enthusiastic work in Rally Officials Training, and for always being aware of the value of volunteers to motor sport. Motor Sports Council chairman Tony Scott Andrew presented John with a certificate of appreciation and a commemorative clock at Loton Park last month. **************************************************************************************************

The 20 volunteer officials, from different backgrounds and with experience ranging from a few months to decades, were welcomed to the state-of-the-art facility in Wok- ing, Surrey, where they gathered around Lewis Hamilton’s title-winning MP4-23 for a group photograph. “All eight UK-based F1 teams ran competitions on the Go Motorsport website during National Motorsport Week, giving members of the public a rare chance to see be- hind the closed doors of a modern grand prix team,” said Go Motorsport co-ordinator Jonathan Gill. “McLaren was keen to reward some of the dedicated marshals who work so tirelessly to make motor sport possible, so that particular competition was only open to those volunteers registered with the MSA. The feedback from the win- ners of all these competitions has been amazing and we are grateful to the teams for making this possible.” Volunteers are vital to all forms of motor sport; if you or anybody you know would like to get involved, visit the Go Help section of www.GoMotorsport.net or head to the British Motorsport Marshals Club website at www.marshals.co.uk. *********************************************************************************************** Go Motorsport at the National Motorsport Show This year’s National Motorsport Show – Motorsport UK – at the Ricoh Arena in Cov- entry on 5-6 November is being run in association with Go Motorsport. There will be an assessment day in November at Silverstone, where the judges will

25 be BRDC President Derek Warwick, BTCC champion Jason Plato, DTM driver , McLaren engineer Mark Williams, commentator Ian Titchmarsh, and Autosport’s Kevin Turner and Marcus Pye. The winner will be announced at December’s Autosport Awards. “It’s a privilege to have been nominated for the second year in a row,” said 17-year-old Blomqvist, whose maiden German F3 season ended early with a back-breaking incident at Lausitz, following a win and two poles. “It would be hugely beneficial to my career if I could succeed my national quad team mate, , as the winner of this prestigious award.” Meanwhile Lynn, 18, said: “It’s an honour to be in the running. Being on Team UK has helped me to maximise my potential, which will hopefully put me in good stead for the award assessment.” Lynn has one hand on the Formula Renault UK trophy ahead of the upcoming season finale at Silverstone. **************************************************************************************************** MSA Coaches visit Malta for RTP delivery The MSA Academy was called overseas for the first time last month, when MSA Coaches Greg Symes and James Wozencroft delivered Performance Master Classes to 19 young drivers in the Maltese capital, Valletta. The workshops were delivered by the MSA in its capacity as an FIA Institute Gold Stan- dard Regional Training Provider, on behalf of the Malta Motorsport Federation (MMF). The MSA Coaches ran seven classes: Maximising your potential as an athlete; Goal set- ting and planning; Creating your winning team and communications; Sponsorship; The racing parent; The safety of motor sport; and Anti-doping. “What started as a dream 14 months ago is today a reality being lived here; the First MMF/FIA Institute Performance Master Class sessions for young drivers,” said MMF President Tonio Cini. Symes added: “This has been the first opportunity to combine our competitor develop- ment pathway, the MSA Academy, with our work as an FIA Institute RTP. The drivers were extremely passionate about the sport and their own development and really en- gaged with the classes we delivered.” The following weekend Wozencroft joined fellow MSA Coach Duncan Tappy and Team UK graduate Adam Gould to deliver Performance Master Classes to karters at the BTCC meeting. Team UK racer Alex Lynn and driver were also on hand to offer advice and show the karters around their Formula Renault machines. ***************************************************************************************************
