Assistant Program Coordinator Art Contest for 2015 NCORE Cover art for the 2015 program guide was created by Dewaine Green of Washington DC This year’s cover image was chosen from submissions in NCORE’s first student art competition. Partnering with pre-selected public secondary schools in the DC area, interested student artists were mentored by art teachers on their submissions. A selection panel made the final cover choice as well acknowledging 6 runners up. This year’s participating schools, located in the Congress Heights area in Washington, D.C., are Thurgood Marshall Academy and Friendship Academy. Each participant school received a small monetary award to be used in support of the school’s art program. The schools kept the art materials provided for the artists to use for submissions. The mentor teachers and students will be recognized during an art show in the conference hotel. Check the program for the time and place. The winning cover artist will also be recognized during one of the keynote general sessions. We are excited you are joining us in DC this year and hope you will be able to not only learn from the conference, but become a change agent on your campus. What is NCORE? In 1988, the Southwest Center for Human Relations Studies launched the first annual National Conference for Race and Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE®) to address the resurgence of racist incidents in higher education. Since its inception, the conference has evolved into a vital national resource for higher education institutions, providing an annual multicultural forum that attracts Black/African Americans, American Indians, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Latino/as and European Americans representing campuses across the United States. The NCORE conference series constitutes the leading and most comprehensive national forum on issues of race and ethnicity in American higher education. The conference focuses on the complex task of creating and sustaining comprehensive institutional change designed to improve racial and ethnic relations on campus and to expand opportunities for educational access and success by culturally diverse, traditionally underrepresented populations. NCORE is designed to provide a significant forum for discussion, critical dialogue and exchange of information as institutions search for effective strategies to enhance access, social development, education, positive communication and cross-cultural understanding in culturally diverse settings. We’ve come a long way in terms of advancing the cause of racial and ethnic equality in higher education in our country, but that doesn’t mean our climb has reached its zenith. In many ways, we’ve just begun. At its essence, NCORE is about facilitating conversations – conversations that need to happen to keep the momentum we have, or to generate new momentum in the fight for educational equality. NCORE is about empowering those bold enough to be difference makers by providing information and a forum for collaboration and support. NCORE unites people - administrators, faculty, students and others - who recognize both their ability to speak and their responsibility to do so. People are listening. NCORE provides a voice. Powell: Creating an Osage Future: Art, Resistance, and Self-Representation (Under the direction of Jean Dennison and Rudolf Colloredo Mansfeld) Creating an Osage Future: Art, Resistance, and Self-Representation, examines the ways Osage citizens—and particularly artists—engage with mainstream audiences in museums and other spaces in order to negotiate, manipulate, subvert, and sometimes sustain static notions of Indigeneity. This project interrogates some of the tactics Osage and other American Indian artists are using to imagine a stronger future, as well as the strategies mainstream museums are using to build and sustain more equitable and mutually beneficial relationships between their institutions and Indigenous communities. In addition to object-centered ethnographic research with contemporary Osage artists and Osage citizens and collections-based museum research at various museums, this dissertation is informed by three recent exhibitions featuring the work of Osage artists at the Denver Art Museum, the Field Museum of Natural History, and the Sam Noble Museum at the University of Oklahoma. Drawing on methodologies of humor, autoethnography, and collaborative knowledge-production, this project strives to disrupt the hierarchal structures within academia and museums, opening space for Indigenous and aesthetic knowledges.

MISSION STATEMENT GlobalGirl Media (GGM) develops the voice and media literacy of teenage girls and young women in under-served communities by teaching them to create and share digital journalism designed to ignite community activism and social change. Through mentoring, training and access to a worldwide network of online distribution partners, GlobalGirl Media harnesses the power of new digital media to empower young women to bring their often-overlooked perspectives onto the global media stage. GlobalGirl Media’s model is unique in that it pairs GlobalGirl news bureaus in U.S. cities with bureaus in international cities, creating a peer-to-peer global online network of girls. As of June 2012, GlobalGirl Media has implemented initiatives in seven cities in South Africa, Morocco and the United States, training more than 120 girls and young women, who have produced 125 video features using traditional camera and sound; 85 mobile journalism pieces on I-pod touch devices; and 180 blog reports that were distributed through trans-media platforms, predominantly online, but also including print, broadcast TV and cable, cell phones, radio and social media. 2. OUR MODEL GlobalGirl Media partners with local non-profit and educational organizations to provide a rigorous, four-week program of education and training in new digital media and citizen journalism to groups of 15 to 20 girls, ages 16-21, who are selected in partnership with local NGOs and/or educational institutions. Instructed by seasoned media professionals, the girls first learn the fundamentals of journalism: identifying and telling a story; journalism ethics, using a camera, sound and technical equipment; digital/mobile story-telling; and social media as a tool for development.
