en’s style is about slow change, but looks do become passé. Some key indicators reveal that velvet jackets are being overdone. Ever parroting high fashion, H&M and Zara Mhave offered velvet jackets for the last four fall/winters. They were even seen at Walmart’s domestic rival, Target. Bar-hoppers in Sanlitun pair this sumptuous garment with “distressed” jeans, Guomao white-collars wear them with black suit trousers for the office, and Xidan hairdressers don the polyester version to brashly grope passersby. Mass consumer- ism seems to have been harsh to the former fabric of monarchs, once associated with Oscar Wilde and plush smoking jackets worn in mahogany paneled cigar rooms. The apogee and decline of velvet came in the “me decade”. Rockers from Hendrix to Keith Richards performed in crushed velvet jackets and hip huggers while Studio 54 fashionistas debauched in dark velvet suits. Soon, grouped with bell-bottoms and polyester, velvet for men acquired the 1970s foul aroma of shiny tackiness. In the latest phase of popularity for velvet, inaugurated by Tom Ford and other designers in the late ‘90s, more undeserving wearers took up cheap versions of the cloth, aided by down-market diluters of runway fashions. With the other colors, a shirt with some texture is needed to stand up to the heavi- ness of the velvet though turtlenecks and v-necks are also acceptable. Gray or fawn flannels, nice khakis and even subtle plaids can all balance out the imposing top. Slim jeans and a paisley shirt would perfectly evoke swinging London, but, again, only try this if you don’t mind dressing like a faux-rockstar. White-collars or students seeking a casual blazer for this fall should choose mole- skin, corduroy or tweed – fabrics that make sense in Beijing’s rough environment. It’s also easier to get away with the budget version, rather than velvet.
