Introduction In his basic work on the Swedes on the Delaware Amandus Johnson refers to twelve expeditions which during the period I 637 to 1655 were dispatched to the New Sweden colony. His sources are mainly to be found in Sweden. Of particular value are two series under the headings Handel och sjofart (Trade and Navigation), Vols. 42-44 and 194-197, of which one series during Amandus Johnson's time was to be found in Kammararkivet (Exchequer Archives) and the other in Riksarkivet (National Archives). Today the Exchequer Archives have been transferred to the National Archives. So far as Johnson attempted to reconstruct the crew lists and the passenger manifests-his interest in personal as well as social history was rather limited-he stayed mainly with the rosters which listed the settlers, as a rule only the adult males in the colony at various times.

    THE COINS OF SWEDEN To Queen Christina By David Ruckser Sweden, officially the Kingdom of Sweden, is a Nordic country on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe. It has borders with Norway (west and north) and Finland (northeast). It has been a member of the European Union since January 1, 1995. Its capital city is Stockholm. At 449,964 km² (173,720 square miles), Sweden is the third largest country by area in Western Europe and fifth in all of Europe. Sweden has a low population density of 20 people per square kilometre, except in its metropolitan areas; 84% of the popula- tion lives in urban areas, which comprise only 1.3% of the country's total land area so that's about 1,300 people per square kilometre (3,400 per square mile) in urban areas. The inhabitants of Sweden enjoy a high standard of living, and the country is generally perceived as modern and liberal, with an organisational and corporate cul- ture that is non-hierarchical and collectivist compared to its Anglo-Saxon counter- parts.[3] Nature conservation, environmental protection and energy efficiency are generally prioritized in policy making and embraced by the general public in Sweden. Sweden has long been a major exporter of iron, copper and timber. Improved trans- portation and communication has allowed for the large scale utilization of remote nat- ural assets, most notably timber and iron ore. In the 1890s, universal schooling and industrialization enabled the country to devel- op a successful manufacturing industry and by the twentieth century, Sweden emerged as a welfare state, consistently achieving high positions among the top-ranking countries in the UN Human Development Index (HDI).

Crofters and lodgers in Västmanland in the 17th century We know very little about the unlanded population (obesuttna) in Sweden before 1750. Still, knowledge of this group is vital not only to our understanding of the proletarianization proces, but also to the understanding of rural Sweden before the changes of the 18th and 19th centuries. This article takes a step towards filling this gap. Tax registers and church records from 17th-century Västmanland shows substan- tial proportions of unlanded people, i.e. crofters, cottagers, soldiers, artisans, and lodgers, around 1640 and 1690. The age structure of this group, which can be studied for the latter part of the period, shows that it mostly consisted of people in working age. In conclusion, the article argues that there was a significant group of smallholders and wage labourers in 17th-century Sweden, comparable to the labouring poor of other European countries.

Abstract By examining how Queen Christina of Sweden collected, what she collected, and where she displayed objects, we can better understand her motives for amassing what became the Early Modern period’s largest collection of antiquities owned by a woman. This dissertation argues that personal and political reasons motivated her to develop what could be considered a borderless, genderless, classical persona, that is represented in her display of antique objects. When her collecting habits are assessed alongside her sponsorship of classical scholarship, it becomes clear that Christina’s development of antiquities collections was inextricably tied to the large body of allegorical imagery associated with the queen. I claim that she sought a hybrid historical identity as both Swedish and European, and that the necessity to maintain political authority in both political contexts gave shape to the queen’s self-fashioning through the antique.

Institutionen för historiska studier, Göteborg 2016 Abstract Sweden´s 17th century – a period of expansion or stagnation? Demographic developments in Sweden during the Early Modern Period remain to a large extent unknown. Population totals for periods before the 18th century are debated. The population figure for ca. 1700 is mostly accepted among historians; the average growth during the 17th century - an important period in Sweden´s history - is however disputed. The calculation of the total population of Sweden in 1630 is crucial for any growth estimates, as the years around 1630 have the best source material of the century. This article concludes that Sweden had an average growth rate of some 0.6 per cent from 1630–1700, much higher than earlier estimates among historians; placing Sweden within the dynamic North Sea development zone of the time, led by the Netherlands and England. The arguments for this conclusion are derived from three independent groups of sources, 1) households according to poll tax registers and contemporary data on mean household sizes, 2) vital data from church records, and 3), calorie consumption levels taken from a great variety of sources including cattle tax registers, land surveys and tithe records. All the material points in the same direction. Arguments for a big population in 1630 followed by relatively slow growth tend to be based on sources not from the 17th century, but rather on data on household sizes, social and demographic structure from the late 18th century, extrapolated backwards. When it comes to consumption levels, the proponents of a high population figure miss the importance of the fact that during the 17th century Sweden went from a net exporter of cereals to a big net importer, with imports for periods at the end of the century maybe feeding as much as a fourth of the population.
