  • Craftsmanship Renovation of an Underground Railroad Safe-House in Gettysburg by Peter H
Craftsmanship Renovation of an Underground Railroad Safe-house in Gettysburg By Peter H. Michael This article appeared in Construction Executive magazine in May, 2013. The renovation by Morgan-Keller Construction written about here won a first-place national prize for historic reno- vation. ❦ When Dwight Pryor was married in the chapel of the historic Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1993, he never imagined that he would revisit the school in charge of the delicate job of expertly restoring its oldest, most revered building. Constructed in 1831-32 for $10,500 and named for the Seminary's first president, Schmucker Hall was first used for all of the Seminary's functions, then as a student dormitory as the school con- structed other buildings. The first engagement of the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg was fought on Seminary Ridge in and around Schmucker Hall which was commandeered by both armies as a hospital where thousands of casualties were treated and a few precious artifacts were left be- hind. The seven-level stone-and-brick landmark comprises four stories, basement, attic and cu- pola. The Seminary itself made civil rights history from its founding, through the Civil War and beyond. The Seminary's barn, no longer extant, is among the three to four percent of today's claimed Underground Railroad sites having conclusive documentation of involvement in the dangerous, illegal, clandestine moral network which shepherded tens of thousands of freedom seekers to northern states and Canada. The Seminary's role in abolitionism was early, active, bold and, more than once, punished.

  • Godfrey Bisher
Godfrey Bisher Born December 1, 1818, Atlantic Ocean Died September 7, 1897, Davidson County, North Carolina Godfrey was born on the voyage from Amsterdam to Charleston that brought his parents, Conrad and Margaretha, to America. He married Loucinda Loflin, who bore seven children, two of them twins (William and John). Private Godfrey Bischerer Company F, 7th Regiment, North Carolina State Troops Private Godfrey Bischerer was the oldest private in the most outstanding company of one of the most illustrious Confederate regiments in the Civil War. He participated in several of the greatest battles of the war including Manassas, Harper's Ferry, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg, and in the lesser known, but fierce battles of New Bern, Hanover Court House, Cedar Mountain, Ox Hill, and Shepherdstown. He followed the great generals Stonewall Jackson and A.P. Hill into combat, marched hundreds of miles through North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, crossed back and forth over the Potomac River probably half a dozen times, helped destroy a portion of the B&O Railroad, and, in one of the most dramatic episodes in American history, charged across the killing grounds at Gettysburg in the main wave of the assault that has been memorialized as "Pickett's Charge." He spent nearly a year in a prisoner-of-war camp known for brutality, where guards sometimes took target practice with the unsuspecting inmates. If not a hero, Godfrey Bischerer was certainly a tenacious survivor. Private Bischerer and The Civil War August 21, 1861 - Camp Mason, Alamance Co., NC - 7th Regt. • Backpacking: Bird Knob
1 © 1999 Troy R. Hayes. All rights reserved. Preface As a new Scoutmaster, I wanted to take my troop on different kinds of adventure. But each trip took a tremendous amount of preparation to discover what the possibilities were, to investigate them, to pick one, and finally make the detailed arrangements. In some cases I even made a reconnaissance trip in advance in order to make sure the trip worked. The Pathfinder is an attempt to make this process easier. A vigorous outdoor program is a key element in Boy Scouting. The trips described in these pages range from those achievable by eleven year olds to those intended for fourteen and up (high adventure). And remember what the Irish say: The weather determines not whether you go, but what clothing you should wear. My Scouts have camped in ice, snow, rain, and heat. The most memorable trips were the ones with "bad" weather. That's when character building best occurs. • Jacob A. Heist: a Michigan Wolverine
Jacob A. Heist: A Michigan Wolverine ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Come on, you Wolverines! General George Custer, rallying the Michigan Cavalry at Gettysburg, 3 July 1863 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– As we passed into the field a shell exploded directly in front of us. It Gen. George Custer took a leg off a man in troop H which preceded us and had dismounted to fight on foot, and I saw him hopping around on his one remaining limb and heard him shriek with pain. Captain James Kidd, Michigan Cavalry, recalling the battle at Williamsport, 6 July 1863 Capt. James Kidd ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– “Dammit! Dammit! Dammit! Dammit!” After the searing physical pain and shock, the mental desperation kicked in. Looking at the bloody mass of flesh and bone where a whistling shell fragment had severed his leg, he knew his life was forever changed. Jacob A. Heist was an eighteen year old farm boy, a volunteer in the 6th Michigan Cavalry Regiment, soldiering on through an extraordinary week of fatigue, fear, excitement, and danger. His brigade had battled J.E.B. Stuart’s cavalry on horse and foot around Gettysburg just days ago. He’d slept astride his horse through night marches ... watched in awe and dread as the roar, smoke, and iron of cannon fire tore through large swathes of men and horses at Gettysburg ... struggled blindly uphill at Monterey Pass against a rain of enemy fire while covered by nothing but the dark of night and six inches of mud. The bright sense of adventure and gallantry was fading quickly as war’s dark realities bore down on his body and mind.
