Whether they appear as a vengeful, longhaired woman like Sadako of Ringu (1998) or as a loveable, electric mouse like Pokémon’s Pikachu, these imaginary creatures have become the mortar for Japan’s “character empire” that has ingrained itself deep into the global marketplace.
