HIPSVILLE Carnival a Go Go! the Wildest '60S & Beyond Party May 10, 2016 09:30 BST HIPSVILLE Carnival A Go Go! The Wildest ’60s & Beyond Party Festival Weekend - May 13th -15th! HIPSVILLE A Go Go! is where crazy people from all the corners of Europe, and beyond, get together to dance and party at a carnival-themed weekend to the wildest rock'n'roll and soul sounds of the 1960s and beyond! With thirteen live bands, top international DJs, caged go go dancers, hot rods and gorillas plus a whole bunch of people looking for a good time, that's HIPSVILLE Carnival A Go Go! Watch video on YouTube here Saturday and Sunday afternoon its tiki time! At the HIPSVILLE Tiki party, taking place in the exotically themed bar they call Tikiville, you can party throughout the afternoon with DJs and go go girls, plus our Hipsville's very own cocktail mixer will add some extra hula hula to your drinks and your afternoon. But wait, there's even more, as on Sunday we have the added attraction of the HIPSVILLE AUTO SHOW. Last year it was a huge success with over 80 cars rolling in. So in 2016 roll up in or on your ride or just look enviously at some of the coolest sets of wheels on the road. In addition to the music, girls and the cars, HIPSVILLE Carnival A Go Go! also has a three-day vintage market with stalls selling food, clothes, records and home wear, perfect for those looking for something cool to wear or maybe something hip for their home. Swiss garage punks THE JACKETS combine sixties garage, mod, ’77 punk rock, psychedelia and their devotion to bands like The MC5, The Monks, and The Music Machine. The Jackets bring a dynamic recipe to the garage rock menu but what matters is that the Jackets are a Rock and Roll band – but it’s the ROLL that makes the ROCK just that little bit better! The Jackets are Jack Torera (aka Jackie Brutsche) formerly the guitarist for the girl group The Mad Cowgirl Disease from Bern and singer of the Zurich combo The Fox, Chris Rosales, an American who moved to Switzerland in 1994 from Los Angeles, formerly the drummer of Voodoo Rhythm Records bands, Lightning Beat-Man and the Never Heard of ’Ems, Reverend Beat-Man and the Unbelievers and The Get Lost (with ex Miracle Workers Gerry Mohr and Robert Butler) and Samuel ‘Schmidi’ Schmidiger, singer and guitar player for The Budget Boozers. Watch video on YouTube here The Jackets have electrified concert-goers in every major city in Switzerland and have also played or toured in Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Norway, Spain, Portugal and Great Britain sharing the stage with bands like Baby Woodrose,The Monsters, Magnetix, King Kahn & BBQ, Lyres, Gonn and The Sonics. Late last year Dirty Water Records officially released to the wider world the much anticipated début LP from “the young, trashy organ and drums-only duo” from Cleveland USA, Archie and the Bunkers. The influential College Music Journal (CMJ) recently penned the “trashy twosome’s” début as, “a clutzy, cavalcade of 'organ punk' (as the band have dubbed themselves), one of the better débuts of the year”. 2015 indeed was year that saw the band propel from a mostly word of mouth local band to national and international acclaim. Watch video on YouTube here Brothers Emmett and Cullen O’Connor produce a sound that draws heavily from diverse musical influences ranging from jazz organ greats like Jimmy Smith, and Richard ‘Groove’ Holmes, to punk icons Dead Boys (they opened for original member Cheetah Chrome earlier this year), The Stooges, The Screamers, The Damned, and more. These home-schooled siblings have obviously been receiving an education that is far less limited than that of kids who attend the local high school. Formed in 2012 SEX CRIME feature ex-members from Epoxies , No-Talents and Operation S. The band is made up of Ryan : Guitar, vocals. Cecilia : Synth, Farfisa, vocals. Tim : Stand-up drums, vocals. Shauna : Bass, vocals. Their HIPSVILLE Carnival A Go Go! show will be the last show and possibly their wildest! after touring in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Belgium as part of their Euro tour to promote their debut LP ‘SEX CRIME‘ released by Danger Records in March 2016. Listen to tracks from the new LP below. Watch video on YouTube here Coming from Lyon, France, The Missing Souls are here to make you jump, shake, and shout! They play a soulful garage beat that will make you squeak… Watch video on YouTube here They released their debut single on Dangerhouse/Skylab Records: “Just gotta know my mind” / “Bad way to go”, and have just released their second single: “Got to have your lovin'” / “You ain’t tuff” on Hidden Volume Records. Their first LP will be hitting the streets real soon and will be released on Dangerhouse/Skylab Records again, make sure you grab a copy cos this one will be hot! Are you tired of the Twist? Weary of the Watusi? Hungover from the Hully Gully? Well then, it sounds like it´s time you tried the Chicken! The MFC CHICKEN, to be slightly more specific. Sunday afternoon at HIPSVILLE Carnival A Go Go! you’ll be treated to a very special one-off MFC CHICKEN DeLUXE show, as they’ll be joined by roots rhythm and soul divaSISTER COOKIE plus ALL STAR SPECIAL GUESTS for a sax fueled R’n’B Revue performance that is guaranteed to get you doing the Chicken! Watch video on YouTube here SISTER COOKIE, roots, rhythm and soul singer. Performing in some capacity since her late teens, and teaching herself to sing and to play the piano from an early age, SISTER COOKIE was a fixture of the vintage & retro music scenes in London, appearing regularly at events like the Lady Luck Club nights, Jukebox Jam and Shore Leave. Following a few years’ hiatus to focus on family life, she returned to music at the end of 2012. Since then, she has gigged across Europe, including wild and wonderful roots music festivals such as Lache Pas La Patate in France, Sweden’s Hultsfreed Hayride, Funtastic Dracula Carnival and Slap! Festival in Spain. 2015 brought more of the same, with plenty of shows both at home and abroad, including a successful first tour of Spain. MFC CHICKEN are inspired by the early 60´s frat rock sound of the American Pacific Northwest purveyed by the likes of the SONICS and the WAILERS, these chicken-men took the sound that influenced those acts and combined high-octane Little Richard and Chuck Berry style Rock and Roll, dirty New Orleans Rhythm and Blues, West Coast Surf, Frat House Stomp & Twist Music to create something that has now come to be known (by those in the know) as, the chicken sound“ Hipsville 2016 Full Band Lineup: MFC CHICKENDELUXE FT. RECORD DREAMS 50 Hallucinations and Visions of Rare and Strange Vinyl Vinyl, to: vb. A neologism that describes the process of immersing yourself in an antique playback format, often to the point of obsession - i.e. I’m going to vinyl at Utrecht, I may be gone a long time. Or: I vinyled so hard that my bank balance has gone up the wazoo. The end result of vinyling is a record collection, which is defned as a bad idea (hoarding, duplicating, upgrading) often turned into a good idea (a saleable archive). If you’re reading this, you’ve gone down the rabbit hole like the rest of us. What is record collecting? Is it a doomed yet psychologically powerful wish to recapture that frst thrill of adolescent recognition or is it a quite understandable impulse to preserve and enjoy totemic artefacts from the frst - perhaps the only - great age of a truly mass art form, a mass youth culture? Fingering a particularly juicy 45 by the Stooges, Sweet or Sylvester, you could be forgiven for answering: fuck it, let’s boogie! But, you know, you’re here and so are we so, to quote Double Dee and Steinski, what does it all mean? Are you looking for - to take a few possibles - Kate Bush picture discs, early 80s Japanese synth on the Vanity label, European Led Zeppelin 45’s (because of course they did not deign to release singles in the UK), or vastly overpriced and not so good druggy LPs from the psychedelic fatso’s stall (Rainbow Ffolly, we salute you)? Or are you just drifting, browsing, going where the mood and the vinyl takes you? That’s where Utrecht scores.

It’s tough to find people on my level at parties—only stumbling, shrieking, stupid multitudes. Just try bringing up, for example, Max Ernst. I have on multiple occasions. Most recently I brought him up at Cynthia’s party. Af- terwards she told me I had made people uncomfortable. I replied, “Uncom- fortable by what? Knowledge?” Well, I actually thought of that a couple of minutes later after she had already walked away, but I still said it out loud to make a point.

  • Hi Yo, Silver!
Introduction Jake Austen Hi Yo, Silver! lthough I welcome clichés in silent films, A country lyrics, and Archie comics, I’m no fan of them in real life. When musicians or profes- sors I know become entangled with, respectively, heroin or an undergrad, I don’t pass judgment about their morality, professionalism, or weak wills, but rather I feel embarrassed about their unoriginality. By this standard, I should have been pretty ill at ease when I found myself in a rundown hospital on the Southside of Chicago, seated at the deathbed of a wizened old blues- man, choking out his final wishes in rural dialect. Several factors, however, redeemed me from stereotypicality. The singer was not imparting rough- hewn wisdom to make me a better man, not trying to guide me toward the crossroads where the mystic secrets of the blues would be re- vealed. He wasn’t sacrificing himself for my Cau- casian redemption, and he didn’t anoint me with coolness by sharing his essential “soul.” Cool was not a commodity that the Black Lone Ranger, who was instructing me about which mask he wanted to wear at his funeral, had to share. When he rode the number 28 bus in his powder- blue Lone Ranger outfit, plastic guns by his side, a ragged, hand- sewn mask covering his face, urban teens laughed at him. Even in his element—blues clubs such as the Checkerboard Lounge, in which he’d become a fixture over the decades—the Ranger Downloaded from http://read.dukeupress.edu/books/book/chapter-pdf/648498/9780822393375-001.pdf by guest on 02 October 2021 2 was begrudgingly allotted only five minutes a night on stage with the band, Introduction singing one of the three Muddy Waters songs in his repertoire, receiving modest applause and no pay.

Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Music › Band of the Week › News Features Reviews Playlists Band of the Week: The Monks Resident sound-nerd Tom Killingbeck thumbs through reams of musty vinyl so you don’t have to. Here are his weekly recommendations… Monday 8 November 2010 #01: The Monks Who: Gary Burger, Eddie Shaw, Larry Clark, Roger Johnston and Dave Day. When: 1960’s. Where: Germany. Why: The Monks stand as one of the most meteoric and idiosyncratic groups of all time; a scorching flash in the pan releasing one colossal, efficacious record then disappearing into the netherealm from whence they came. Made up of American ex-GIs stationed in Germany, and conceptualised by existentialist gurus Walther Niemann and Karl Remy, The Monks tore apart the R&B rulebook with jackboot rhythms, industrial cadences and freaky free-jazz improvisational mid-song cataclysms. Billed as the ‘anti-Beatles’, they lived up to their name with tonsure haircuts, black cassocks and noose-neckties becoming their de rigueur uniform. Far from being merely aesthetically bizarre, the band’s music eclipsed their maverick image – as Gary Burger accidentally left his guitar against his amp the band started playing along with the feedback, hence the predominance of ear-splitting gnarled noise rattling through many of their compositions. Along with Burger’s fuzz savagery (which it’s claimed a young Jimi Hendrix took notes from) Dave Day’s inspired choice of a six-stringed gut-strung electric banjo as his weapon of musical deconstruction added a bullish abattoir clank to an already fearsome arsenal of instruments.

  • Mister Heavenly Mister Heavenly Dabbled in Love and Affection On
Mister Heavenly Mister Heavenly dabbled in love and affection on their first record, 2011’s Out of Love. This time, however, Ryan Kattner, Nicholas Thorburn and Joe Plummer are in a scrappy mood as they embrace a tougher sound on the band’s new album, Boxing the Moonlight. “It seemed like it was a good idea to pivot from the subject matter of the first record,” Thorburn says. “That was maybe a more emotional thing, and I think this record is much more physical.” The physicality is evident right from the start, in the hammering piano and terse rhythm that fuel opener “Beat Down,” or in the buzzing chaos on “Dead Duck,” a psych-heavy freakout that evokes the Monks. The experimental ’60s garage-rockers aren’t the only musical reference point on Boxing the Moonlight. Seventies Krautrock band Faust was a big influence while the songs were being written, as was the sound of hip-hop production in the late ’80s and early ’90s, which informed the deep groove of “Hammer Drop” and the spacious guitar sound on “Magic Is Gone.” Meanwhile, “Crazy Love, Vol. III,” is a smooth jam with an ulterior motive. “My only hope is that ‘Crazy Love’ can be somebody’s wedding song,” Kattner says. “But the bride has a shiv hidden in her dress.” If it sounds eclectic, that’s no coincidence, though Mister Heavenly’s knack for catchy hooks ensures that it all hangs together with remarkable cohesion. “I personally hate albums where every song sounds the same,” Kattner says. “It all makes sense in the grand scheme of things.
