hospitality asia ~ March-May 2011 Page IFC C M Y K hospitality asia ~ March-May 2011 Page 1 C M Y K NOTE PUBLISHER’S ROAR OF THE FINEST While I am always wistful when it comes to comparing the Singapore hospitality experience to that of my home country, I know that other Southeast Asian properties are looking at Singapore guardedly as well. They have good reason to. After all, Singapore will play host to the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards 2011-2013, with Capella Singapore hosting the Welcome Dinner on November 17 2011, and Mandarin Orchard Singapore hosting the Gala Dinner the next night. I know Singapore well enough to boldly say that both dinner events will be amazing. There is also a fine crop of nominees from the Lion City for HAPA Regional 2011- 2013. I am very pleased to say that instead of shrinking and cautiously watching the action from the sidelines, other Southeast Asian properties have boldly put in their bids to compete with the best of the best. Apart from Singapore and Malaysia, HAPA Regional will see the usual suspects from Thailand (Bangkok and Phuket) and Indonesia (Jakarta and Bali). The new participating cities are Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Bintan, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Manila as well. What a series it is going to be! As my team and I continue to endeavour to lift the standards of Southeast Asian hospitality on a whole, we also look to our own publication with the view of improving. We continue to refine the product, fuelled by feedback from not only the suppliers which this publication initially served, but also the increasing number of first class and business travellers who enjoy our content on some of the best airlines in the world.

It’s not always been smooth sailing for us, but I have steered the magazine through some hard times. My recent coup is that finally, after a lot of challenges and ups and downs, we are finally hosting HAPA Indonesia in Bali. The Island of the Gods is the event destination of my dreams and I am glad that for once, at least, (but I am certainly going to try to do it again!), HAPA will be held in this iconic destination. Staying The Course lthough it’s a small Series, consultants and event managers. This we’re very proud to be able was our first car event in our portfolio. to host the inaugural HAPA We were also appointed to co-host the Indonesia this August. Look around the region and it is clear that new properties now have personalities of their own. They become a physical representation of the characteristics of their brand, and assume distinct quirks and affectations. People now go to hotels not just to stay, but to be enveloped in an experience. It’s fitting therefore that we dedicate a whole spread to the men and women who, through their work as architects and designers, bring to life the personality of the buildings they work on. From owners, developers, interior designers and management teams, this issue’s Architecture & Design feature sings the praises of the people behind some of Kuala Lumpur’s cool new properties.

Hence, for the many winners at the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards (HAPA), there are probably some who wish fate had favoured them differently. While it is hard to be the runner-up, being number two, is sometimes more important than being numero uno. That’s because when you’re number one, you fear losing the top spot, but as number two, there is nowhere to go but up. One of the things HAPA celebrates is the career journey of each individual nominee. Our finalists are short listed for a reason. They have poured heart and soul into being the people they are today, and HAPA is about the triumph of that spirit, so in that sense, a mere nomination means that someone, somewhere in the industry feels you are right up there with the pack. That is why it is so important that each nominated personality attends the HAPA Awards dinner. It is a sign of respect to the peers who think you are worthy of recognition, and it is also a mark of respect to the men and women who have judged you and found you worthy.
