8 Establishment Awards Page 87 IT’s TIME TO SHINE After a six-month judging process, criteria forms are in and scores are being tabulated! A record-breaking number of 167 nominees have been garnered– 62 from Malaysia, 48 from Singapore, 25 from Indonesia, 24 from Thailand and the remainder from Vietnam and the Philippines – indicating a significant 20 percent growth in participation since the first HAPA Regional in 2008. As the days draw closer to HAPA Regional 2011-2013, we trust that all of you have marked down 17 and 18 November 2011 in your calendars as it’s only a mere two months away! Our theme this year for the first night at Capella Singapore is Ritzy White so do come in your best white. The second night on 18 November will be held at Mandarin Orchard Singapore with a Black and Plush Violet colour theme, and a Black Tie dress code. Be on the lookout, for invitation cards are already on the way. Your punctuality is imperative for both nights because we will start the programme on time to have all 35 awards given out. Yes, 35 awards! In line with HAPA’s 10th anniversary this year, we are introducing a new concept to the awards by recognizing the ‘Best 10 in Asia’. All categories will have two groups of awardees; the Platinum and Gold. For instance, HAPA Signature Luxury Hotel category will have 5 Platinum winners and 5 Gold winners. In the Major Award categories, the top scorer amongst the Platinum winners will emerge as the ultimate winner. One policy that remains since HAPA’s inception is that every personality nominated – be it a General Manager, entrepreneur, chef or F&B personality – must be present at the dinner, feeling the exact same anticipation as they wait upon results. As introduced by HAPA’s founder back at the 2008 Regional Series, a report card will be given to each nominee indicating their scores, strengths and weaknesses. Our programme is designed to ensure that not only the HAPA benchmark score is raised every year, but also for our nominees to be well-aware of their standing and performance. Seeing that our nominees will be arriving from different cities across Southeast Asia, we decided to make the awards a two-night event to better provide networking opportunities and of course, allow sufficient time for nominees to relax and enjoy their time in the Lion City. Charity has always been a significant part of HAPA as a form of giving back to society. This year, we have chosen the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Singapore. The Adopt-A-Wish Programme created by the foundation allows individuals or companies to adopt and grant the heartfelt wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. We are proud to announce that we have pre-adopted one child’s wish, even before funds are raised, and we are hoping to adopt a second child’s wish should sufficient funds be raised at the Gala Dinner. As we reflect on the success of HAPA over the last decade, we wish to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the sponsors who have made HAPA possible year after year. To our seven main sponsors this year – Fonterra, Hap Seng, HORECA, PestBusters, Sia Huat, VingCard Elsafe and Woleco – thank you for your support and generosity. Much appreciation also goes out to our other sponsors who have contributed in kind. We also thank our nominees for believing in the HAPA programme and entrusting us to elevate the level of service standards. And to our dear judges who have taken time off their busy schedules, we appreciate the time and expertise you have invested into this programme. So remember, dress to impress, according to the theme, and be punctual! You do not want to miss out on a single moment because it may be your name or establishment we are calling out for on the award stage! 88 hospitality asia LIST OF AWARDS 10 MAJOR AWARDS 8 ESTABLISHMENT 6 CULINARY AWARDS SVE HAPA Service Excellence AWARDS EDE HAPA Most Exquisite Dining Experience HTY HAPA Hotel Of The Year SLH HAPA Signature Luxury Hotel ~ Western Cuisine RSY HAPA Resort Of The Year SBH HAPA Signature Business Hotel ACR HAPA Most Authentic Asian Cuisine RTY HAPA Restaurant Of The Year SDH HAPA Signature Deluxe Hotel Restaurant EOY HAPA Entertainment Outlet Of The Year SLR HAPA Signature Luxury Resort ADD HAPA Most Chic All-Day Dining GCY HAPA Golf Course Of The Year SBQ HAPA Signature Boutique Hotel/Resort TCD HAPA Most Trendy Casual Dining SPY HAPA Spa Of The Year SFR HAPA Signature Family & Recreational (Independent Restaurants) GMY HAPA General Manager Of The Year Resort UFC HAPA Most Unique F&B Concept CTY HAPA Chef Of The Year SSR HAPA Signature Serviced Residences CBR HAPA Most Cosmopolitan Bar & ETY HAPA Hospitality Entrepreneur Of The Year SSE HAPA Signature Spa Experience Restaurant 7 PERSONALITY AWARDS 3 DEPARTMENT AWARDS KKC HAPA King Of Kitchens FOC HAPA Best Front Office MCW HAPA Master Chef ~ Western Cuisine CCG HAPA Best Concierge MCA HAPA Master Chef ~ Asian Cuisine HSK HAPA Best Housekeeping ACP HAPA Artistic Chef ~ Pastry IFB HAPA Most Innovative F&B Personality SPECIAL AWARD MOW HAPA Master Of Wine CSE HAPA F&B Front Line Customer Service SBT HAPA Most Stylistic Bartender Excellence Sponsors Beverage Sponsors Other Sponsors Organizer Official Venue Official Publication Note : The awards listed are subject to change and final confirmation by the HAPA Committee hospitality asia 89 ENDORSEMENT Asian Golf Course Owners Federation Association of Singapore Housekeepers Bali Culinary Professionals Bali Spa & Wellness Association (BSWA Chefs Association of Malaysia Chefs Association of Malaysia, Penang Chapter Hospitality Purchasing Association (Singapore) Indonesia Club Manager Association Indonesia Spa Association DPD DKI Jakarta International Bartenders Association Jakarta International Hotels Association Kuala Lumpur Tourism Association (KLTA) 90 hospitality asia ENDORSEMENT Les Clefs d’Or Indonesia Malaysia Food & Beverage Executives Association Malaysian Association of Housekeepers ( MAHIR) Singapore Chefs’ Association Spa Association of Singapore Thai Spa Association The Food & Beverage Managers Association of Singapore The International Wine & Food Society Singapore The Society of The Golden Keys Of Singapore Indonesia Hotel & Restaurant Association Philippine Bartenders League Purchasing Association Malaysia Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur hospitality asia 91 HOTEL OFFICIAL CAPElla SINGAPORE Capella Singapore offers luxurious six-star accommodation amidst a lush natural setting while being just a stone’s throw away from Singapore’s financial and shopping districts. hospitality asia ~ March-May 2011 Page IFC C M Y K hospitality asia ~ March-May 2011 Page 1 C M Y K NOTE PUBLISHER’S ROAR OF THE FINEST While I am always wistful when it comes to comparing the Singapore hospitality experience to that of my home country, I know that other Southeast Asian properties are looking at Singapore guardedly as well. They have good reason to. After all, Singapore will play host to the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards 2011-2013, with Capella Singapore hosting the Welcome Dinner on November 17 2011, and Mandarin Orchard Singapore hosting the Gala Dinner the next night. I know Singapore well enough to boldly say that both dinner events will be amazing. There is also a fine crop of nominees from the Lion City for HAPA Regional 2011- 2013. I am very pleased to say that instead of shrinking and cautiously watching the action from the sidelines, other Southeast Asian properties have boldly put in their bids to compete with the best of the best. Apart from Singapore and Malaysia, HAPA Regional will see the usual suspects from Thailand (Bangkok and Phuket) and Indonesia (Jakarta and Bali). The new participating cities are Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Bintan, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Manila as well. What a series it is going to be! As my team and I continue to endeavour to lift the standards of Southeast Asian hospitality on a whole, we also look to our own publication with the view of improving. We continue to refine the product, fuelled by feedback from not only the suppliers which this publication initially served, but also the increasing number of first class and business travellers who enjoy our content on some of the best airlines in the world.

Look around the region and it is clear that new properties now have personalities of their own. They become a physical representation of the characteristics of their brand, and assume distinct quirks and affectations. People now go to hotels not just to stay, but to be enveloped in an experience. It’s fitting therefore that we dedicate a whole spread to the men and women who, through their work as architects and designers, bring to life the personality of the buildings they work on. From owners, developers, interior designers and management teams, this issue’s Architecture & Design feature sings the praises of the people behind some of Kuala Lumpur’s cool new properties.

Hence, for the many winners at the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards (HAPA), there are probably some who wish fate had favoured them differently. While it is hard to be the runner-up, being number two, is sometimes more important than being numero uno. That’s because when you’re number one, you fear losing the top spot, but as number two, there is nowhere to go but up. One of the things HAPA celebrates is the career journey of each individual nominee. Our finalists are short listed for a reason. They have poured heart and soul into being the people they are today, and HAPA is about the triumph of that spirit, so in that sense, a mere nomination means that someone, somewhere in the industry feels you are right up there with the pack. That is why it is so important that each nominated personality attends the HAPA Awards dinner. It is a sign of respect to the peers who think you are worthy of recognition, and it is also a mark of respect to the men and women who have judged you and found you worthy.
