Abstract The French Revolution of 1789 was instrumental in the emergence and growth of modern nationalism, the idea that a state should represent, and serve the interests of, a people, or "nation," that shares a common culture and history and feels as one. But national ideas, often with their source in the otherwise cosmopolitan world of the Enlightenment, were also an important cause of the Revolution itself. The rhetoric and documents of the Revolution demonstrate the importance of national ideas. -

Francis Claudon Université de Paris XII [email protected] Les Références antiques et modernes dans Smarra Abstract: Charles Nodier is often thought of as belonging to the “Frenetic School”, he is also perceived as an eccentric author, almost as a humorist, which therefore contrasts with the graveness of the major romantic authors, such as Hugo, Novalis or Shelley. Yet, upon taking a closer look, it becomes obvious that Nodier cultivated “horror”, that is a type of romanticism which would later come to be termed “Black Romanticism”. It is also true that this deeply erudite man very skillfully borrowed elements from various sources in order to create a literature of his own, tales which are his, and his only. In this respect, Nodier is an interesting author for comparative studies. Such is the interest of Smarra, Smarra which initially seems to be an imitation of Apuleius. Yet, when studying the antique text closely, it appears that the Latin author really screens another reference, Shakespeare, the allusions to whom are numerous and difficult to decrypt. The result, a juxtaposition of antiquity and modernity, creates a specific coloring, itself reminiscent of the work of the painter Füssli, who also adapted freely Shakespearian sources, adding to them a sort of neoclassic halo. The true charm of Smarra resides there; Nodier is neither an eccentric nor an amateur, his romanticism is very educated and situates him midway between the erudition of the Enlightenment and the illumination of Romanticism. This conflict permeates the writings of poet and art critic Charles Baudelaire. While Baudelaire scholarship has maintained the idea of the poet as a strict anti-naturalist and proponent of the artificial, this paper offers a revision of Baudelaire‟s relation to nature through a close reading across his critical and poetic texts. The Salon reviews of 1845, 1846 and 1859, as well as Baudelaire‟s Journaux Intimes, Les Paradis Artificiels and two poems that deal directly with the subject of landscape, are examined. That means that there is no state religion, and that all religions and beliefs are viewed as equal from the perspective of the State. This approach is epitomized in the separation of state and church, or more broadly, in the separation of politics and religion. Sometimes, the expression ‘secular State’ is used to refer to this regime, for example in Article 1 of the Constitution of the French Republic. The idea of the neutrality of the State is generally seen as the outcome of the developments that transformed the political philosophy of the Enlight- enment into constitutional law. Its philosophical roots can be traced back to Locke’s famous ‘A Letter concerning Toleration’, where he stated that ‘it is above all things necessary to distinguish exactly the business of civil government from that of religion, and to settle the just bound that lie between the one and the other.’1 The liberal defence of the separation of state and church stresses the separation between the private and the pub- lic spheres. The more radical varieties of liberal thinking even imply that religion belongs entirely to the private sphere, and should not in any way play a role in public life. -

To be sure, Julien Sorel’s attempted murder of Mme de Rênal— at the elevation of the host, at the sacrifice of the mass—was an act of passion,theactofamanmaddenedbyambitionthatwasthwartedat the moment of its climax by the woman he had loved. The story of ‘‘un ambitieux’’ presents itself in Lerougeetlenoiras a nightmare of democ- racy, of aspirations grasped and lost. In the words of Michel Crouzet, Julien stands at the scene of his crime and at his trial as both ‘‘witness and victim of the egalitarian passion and the resentment that is its con- stituent part.’’1 It is the negativity, not the savagery, of Julien’s crime that arrests readers of Lerougeetlenoirand introduces Stendhal into the pantheon of French intellectuals who have chosen liberty, even if in death, over bourgeois mediocrity and materialism: ‘‘In shooting Mme de Rênal, he turns his back on power, ‘he saves himself, forever, to the point of death, one might say, from ambition.’’’2 But how discordant with nineteenth-century values was Julien’s iconic rejection of competitive individualism? FAIR SHARES FOR ALL JACOBIN EGALITARIANISM IN PRACT ICE JEAN-PIERRE GROSS This study explores the egalitarian policies pursued in the provinces during the radical phase of the French Revolution, but moves away from the habit of looking at such issues in terms of the Terror alone. It challenges revisionist readings of Jacobinism that dwell on its totalitarian potential or portray it as dangerously Utopian. The mainstream Jacobin agenda held out the promise of 'fair shares' and equal opportunities for all in a private-ownership market economy. It sought to achieve social justice without jeopardising human rights and tended thus to complement, rather than undermine, the liberal, individualist programme of the Revolution. The book stresses the relevance of the 'Enlightenment legacy', the close affinities between Girondins and Montagnards, the key role played by many lesser-known figures and the moral ascendancy of Robespierre. It reassesses the basic social and economic issues at stake in the Revolution, which cannot be adequately understood solely in terms of political discourse. The Political Life of Edmund Burke
INTRODUCTION 1 Empire and Revolution Th is is a book about the vicissitudes of empire and revolution as confronted by one of the leading political intellects of the eighteenth century. Th e confrontation was complicated in a number of distinct ways. In the fi rst place the term “revolution” had a range of meanings. At its simplest it could denominate a change in the system of government. Yet it could also cover resistance to an established political order lead- ing to the creation of a new regime. Finally it could refer to the subversion of govern- ment along with the various liberties it was supposed to protect. Over the course of his life, Edmund Burke defended revolution in the fi rst two senses although he ardently set himself against the third. But while he supported the rights of legitimate rebellion, he also consistently upheld the authority of empire. However, the picture here was again a complex one. Burke cherished the rights of British imperial sover- eignty, yet he vehemently opposed the standing policies of the Empire. Underlying this apparent ambivalence was a commitment to the rights of conquest accompanied by a repudiation of the “spirit of conquest.” Th is referred to the attitude of usur- pation that Burke believed had characterised European governments in the gothic past. Although governments of the kind had their origins in expropriation, they had gradually accommodated the “spirit of liberty.” Nonetheless, modern liberty for Burke was a precarious achievement. It was capable of relapsing into the spirit of domination, not least in its interactions with the extra- European world.
