"All Pink and Clean and Full of Wonder?" Gendering "Joni Mitchell," 1966-74 Stuart Henderson Just before our love got lost you said: "I am as constant as a northern star." And I said: "Constantly in the darkness - Where 5 that at? Ifyou want me I'll be in the bar. " - "A Case of You," 1971 Joni Mitchell has always been difficult to categorize. A folksinger, a poet, a wife, a Canadian, a mother, a party girl, a rock star, a hermit, a jazz singer, a hippie, a painter: any or all of these descriptions could apply at any given time. Moreover, her musicianship, at once reminiscent of jazz, folk, blues, rock 'n' roll, even torch songs, has never lent itself to easy categorization. Through each successive stage of her career, her songwriting has grown ever more sincere and ever less predictable; she has, at every turn, re-figured her public persona, belied expectations, confounded those fans and critics who thought they knew who she was. And it has always been precisely here, between observers' expec- tations and her performance, that we find contested terrain. At stake in the late 1960s and early 1970s was the central concern for both the artist and her audience that "Joni Mitchell" was a stable identity which could be categorized, recognized, and understood. What came across as insta- bility to her fans and observers was born of Mitchell's view that the honest reflection of growth and transformation is the basic necessity of artistic expres- sion. As she explained in 1979: You have two options.

LANEWAYS IN DANGER THE NEED FOR NEW POLICIES AND DIRECTIONS TO PROPERLY PROTECT MELBOURNE’S CITY LANEWAYS ACDC Lane - Iconic wall demolished This old brick wall and its art at the rear of 108 Flinders Street is now gone, demol- ished in 2012 for an apartment develop- ment. June 2012 Preamble This report provides an account of the current state of laneway preservation and management in Melbourne’s CBD. It is Melbourne Heritage Actions assertion that the current CBD lanes policy is appallingly out of date and does not take into account the rich diversification of uses currently seen in laneways over the last 15 years. This report will also give an account of the current threats to lanes, how they can be better managed and where the most important existing laneways are which are currently unprotected. Melbourne Heritage Action have also produced a policy steering document which is intended to provide a detailed indication as to how our laneways should be managed and protected. A major photographic assessment of the CBDs existing laneways undertaken by Melbourne Heritage Action member Tristan Davies, has also been included as an appendix and is designed to provide the reader with an overview of the kind of unique and vibrant places the current policy fails to protect. Presgraves Place In a heritage precinct, but it’s laneway buildings current have the lowest amount of protection (D- grading) The lane itself is also Class 3, the lowest level in current policy, despite a cafe, shops and art lining the lane, and it’s multiple daytime through- block access via the Capital Theatre Arcade and Howey Place.

CHARLES KLEIBACKER, MASTER OF THE BIAS CUT; DESIGNS, CONSTRUCTION AND TECHNIQUES DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Joycelyn Falsken, M.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Committee: Professor Patricia A. Cunningham, Adviser Professor Kathryn A. Jakes Professor Alice L. Conklin Curator Gayle M. Strege Copyright by Joycelyn Falsken 2008 ABSTRACT Charles Kleibacker was a fashion designer in New York City from 1960 to 1986, a time when fashion styles reflected the turmoil that occurred in society throughout those years. However, through it all Charles maintained an individual design aesthetic – soft figure-flattering bias dresses with a classic look that could be worn for years. This earned him a devoted clientele of women who purchased his designer ready-to-wear garments at top stores in New York, or were custom fit in his workshop. Because of his preference for and skill with bias, he became known as the Master of the Bias Cut. Trained in French couturier methods of construction, Kleibacker’s garments were all produced with the highest standards in fabric, construction and fit. Bias is known to be the most difficult ‘cut’ to work with when constructing garments. Charles experimented until he figured out how to solve the challenges, and then trained his workers in the exacting techniques required. Having first a career in journalism, Charles’ path to fashion was in “no way normal” and his approach to his business and the industry was not the norm either. Starting small, through much determination and sacrifice, he overcame many obstacles to produce garments engineered for an enduring and graceful artistry.

ENGAGING OUR HISTORIES AND THE DIFFICULT HISTORIES WE TEACH Stephanie C. Konle A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Education. Chapel Hill 2018 Approved by: Madeleine R. Grumet Cheryl Mason Bolick Suzanne Gulledge Xue Lan Rong Lynda Stone © 2018 Stephanie C. Konle ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Stephanie C. Konle: Engaging Our Histories and the Difficult Histories We Teach (Under the direction of Madeleine R. Grumet) This dissertation proposes to enrich the scope of history education research, and by extension the preparation of history and social studies teachers and the classroom experiences of their students, through the inclusion of autobiography in the study of history. Education research on the teaching of history has typically focused on what scholars call “historical thinking skills,” skills imported from the professional discipline, including contextualization, perspective, use of evidence, etc. While these disciplinary methods are important for the promotion of a deeper and more critical understanding of the past, they often neglect the more emotionally fraught interests, concerns, and questions about the past that teachers and students bring into the classroom. In this research I convened six teachers who teach history or social studies in the Southeast United States, asking them to reflect on how their own relationships to—and anxieties about—particular past events relate to their teaching practice. Participants generated narratives and read and discussed each other’s work along with selections of scholarly texts chosen to prompt further reflection.

Although it is an over-simplification to do so, it can be useful to divide music history into style periods, and to examine the relationship between music and other arts such as painting and literature. Key Points: 1. Instrument Recognition: Instrument Recognition is a process by which musicians learn to identify instruments of music. 2. Timbre Timbre, or tone quality, is an amalgam of several factors. For example, each sound has an attack, or beginning, which may be sharp or gradual. The sound may then hold a steady pitch or it may have vibrato.

  • Abba. a Principios De Los Años Setenta, Cuatro Suecos Llamados Anni-Frid
ABBA Abba.
