Recibido: 22 de mayo de 2015 Publicado on-line: 17 de junio de 2015 Aceptado: 30 de mayo de 2015 Introduction The Pentatomoidea is one of the most species-rich groups of terrestrial Heteroptera with 15 families, nearly 1,250 genera and approximately 7,200 species worldwide (Henry 2009). The Pentatomoidea are phytophagous, except for the pentatomid subfamily Asopinae which are predators. Some genera attack cereals (e.g. Aelia Fabricius, 1803, Eurygaster Laporte, 1833, Mecidea Dallas, 1851), others may destroy brassicaceous crops (e.g. Eurydema Laporte, 1833), while others are pests of fruit trees (e.g. Mustha Amyot & Serville, 1843, Apodiphus Spinola, 1837) (Grazia et al. 2008; Ghahari et al. 2014). Fifteen families including Acanthosomatidae, Canopidae, Cydnidae, Dinidoridae, Lestoniidae, Megarididae, Parastrachiidae, Pentatomidae, Phloeidae, Plataspididae, Saileriolidae, Scutelleridae, Tessaratomidae, Thaumastellidae, Thyreocoridae and Urostylididae are classified under the Pentatomoidea (Schuh & Slater 1995; Sweet & Schaefer 2002; Grazia et al. 2008), with the taxonomic level of two more families (Aphylidae and Cyrtocoridae) being disputed (Kment et al. 2012). The fauna of Iranian Heteroptera was studied quite well and all the data were catalogued (see Ghahari et al. 2009a, b, 2010a, b, 2012a, b, 2013a, b; Ghahari & Moulet 2012, 2013; Ghahari & Heiss 2012; Ghahari & Cherot 2014). About the superfamily Pentatomoidea, a total of 329 species have been reported from Iran so far (Ghahari et al. 2014). The aim of this paper is to increase the knowledge of the Pentatomoidea fauna in some regions of the province of Isfahan (32.6577°N 51.6692°E), located in the center of the country and covering an area of approximately 107,027 km2. 391 Ghahari & Moulet (2015): A faunistic study on the Pentatomoidea (Heteroptera) from the province of Isfahan, Iran. The province has a moderate and dry climate on the whole, ranging between 40.6°C and 10.6°C on a cold day in the winter season. The average annual temperature has been recorded as 16.7°C and the annual rainfall on an average has been reported as 116.9 mm. Material and methods In this research, the materials were collected by sweeping net during different seasons of 2012 - 2013 from some regions of the province of Isfahan, located in central Iran. Additionally, the materials deposited in the collections of some colleagues and also insect collections of some branches of Islamic Azad University were studied. The classification, nomenclature, synonymies and distribution suggested by Rider (2011), Aukema et al. (2013) and Ghahari et al. (2014) have been followed. In total, 22 species of Pentatomoidea within the families Acanthosomatidae, Cydnidae, Pentatomidae, Scutelleridae were collected and identified from the province of Isfahan. The list of species is given below with distributional data. • (Pentatomidae) DISSERTATION Presented
Genome Evolution During Development of Symbiosis in Extracellular Mutualists of Stink Bugs (Pentatomidae) DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Alejandro Otero-Bravo Graduate Program in Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology The Ohio State University 2020 Dissertation Committee: Zakee L. Sabree, Advisor Rachelle Adams Norman Johnson Laura Kubatko Copyrighted by Alejandro Otero-Bravo 2020 Abstract Nutritional symbioses between bacteria and insects are prevalent, diverse, and have allowed insects to expand their feeding strategies and niches. It has been well characterized that long-term insect-bacterial mutualisms cause genome reduction resulting in extremely small genomes, some even approaching sizes more similar to organelles than bacteria. While several symbioses have been described, each provides a limited view of a single or few stages of the process of reduction and the minority of these are of extracellular symbionts. This dissertation aims to address the knowledge gap in the genome evolution of extracellular insect symbionts using the stink bug – Pantoea system. Specifically, how do these symbionts genomes evolve and differ from their free- living or intracellular counterparts? In the introduction, we review the literature on extracellular symbionts of stink bugs and explore the characteristics of this system that make it valuable for the study of symbiosis. We find that stink bug symbiont genomes are very valuable for the study of genome evolution due not only to their biphasic lifestyle, but also to the degree of coevolution with their hosts. i In Chapter 1 we investigate one of the traits associated with genome reduction, high mutation rates, for Candidatus ‘Pantoea carbekii’ the symbiont of the economically important pest insect Halyomorpha halys, the brown marmorated stink bug, and evaluate its potential for elucidating host distribution, an analysis which has been successfully used with other intracellular symbionts.

E-mail: [email protected], http://www.cydnidae.uni.opole.pl Abstract First molecular studies on museum specimens of five families of pentatomoid bugs, namely Cydnidae, Dinidoridae, Par- astrachiidae, Tessaratomidae, and Thyreocoridae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomoidea), are presented, as a prelimi- nary approach to molecular phylogenetic analyses of these families. Forty-eight pin-mounted museum specimens representing 46 pentatomoid species collected in the late 19th and the 20th century (more than 15 years old, the oldest spec- imen collected in 1894) were analyzed; and the acquisition of PCR amplifiable mitochondrial DNA (16S and/or 12S rDNA fragments) was successful from 10 specimens, i.e., 2 specimens (2 species) of Cydnidae, 4 specimens (4 species) of Dinidoridae, 1 specimen (1 species) of Parastrachiidae, 1 specimen (1 species) of Tessaratomidae, and 2 specimens

  • Discrimination Between Eggs from Stink Bugs Species in Europe Using MALDI-TOF MS
insects Article Discrimination between Eggs from Stink Bugs Species in Europe Using MALDI-TOF MS Michael A. Reeve 1,* and Tim Haye 2 1 CABI, Bakeham Lane, Egham, Surrey TW20 9TY, UK 2 CABI, Rue des Grillons 1, CH-2800 Delémont, Switzerland; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Simple Summary: Recent globalization of trade and travel has led to the introduction of exotic insects into Europe, including the brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys)—a highly polyphagous pest with more than 200 host plants, including many agricultural crops. Unfortunately, farmers and crop-protection advisers finding egg masses of stink bugs during crop scouting frequently struggle to identify correctly the species based on their egg masses, and easily confuse eggs of the invasive H. halys with those of other (native) species. To this end, we have investigated using matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for rapid, fieldwork-compatible, and low-reagent-cost discrimination between the eggs of native and exotic stink bugs. Abstract: In the current paper, we used a method based on stink bug egg-protein immobilization on filter paper by drying, followed by post-(storage and shipping) extraction in acidified acetonitrile containing matrix, to discriminate between nine different species using MALDI-TOF MS. We obtained 87 correct species-identifications in 87 blind tests using this method. With further processing of the unblinded data, the highest average Bruker score for each tested species was that of the cognate Citation: Reeve, M.A.; Haye, T. reference species, and the observed differences in average Bruker scores were generally large and the Discrimination between Eggs from errors small except for Capocoris fuscispinus, Dolycoris baccarum, and Graphosoma italicum, where the Stink Bugs Species in Europe Using average scores were lower and the errors higher relative to the remaining comparisons.

  • Chemical Analysis of the Metathoracic Scent Gland of Eurygaster Maura (L.) (Heteroptera: Scutelleridae)
    J. Agr. Sci. Tech. (2019) Vol. 21(6): 1473-1484 Chemical Analysis of the Metathoracic Scent Gland of Eurygaster maura (L.) (Heteroptera: Scutelleridae) E. Ogur1, and C. Tuncer2 ABSTRACT Eurygaster maura (L.) (Heteroptera: Scutelleridae) is one of the most devastating pests of wheat in Turkey. The metathoracic scent gland secretions of male and female E. maura were analyzed separately by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Twelve chemical compounds, namely, Octane, n-Undecane, n-Dodecane, n-Tridecane, (E)-2-Hexenal , (E)- 2-Hexen-1-ol, acetate, Cyclopropane, 1-ethyl-2-heptyl, Hexadecane, (E)-3-Octen-1-ol, acetate, (E)-5-Decen-1-ol, acetate, 2-Hexenoic acid, Butyric acid, and Tridecyl ester were detected in both males and females. These compounds, however, differed quantitatively between the sexes. In both females and males, n-Tridecane and (E)-2-Hexanal were the most abundant compounds and constituted approximately 90% of the total content. Minimal amounts of Octane were detected in males and Hexadecane in females. Keywords: (E)-2-Hexenal, GC-MS, Metathoracic scent gland, n-Tridecane, Wheat. INTRODUCTION 100% in the absence of control measures (Lodos, 1986; Özbek and Hayat, 2003). Eurygaster species (Heteroptera: In the order Heteroptera, nearly all species Scutelleridae) are the most devastating pests have scent glands and many of these are of wheat in an extensive area of the Near colloquially referred to as “stink bugs” and Middle East, Western and Central Asia, (Aldrich, 1988). Both nymphs and adults Eastern and South Central Europe, and have scent glands in Heteroptera species Northern Africa (Critchley, 1998; Vaccino (Abad and Atalay, 1994; Abad, 2000).
