Employers and universities can- not demand passwords to social media accounts, such as Facebook or Twitter, because of two social media privacy bills signed by Gov. Jerry Brown on Sept. 27, which will make it illegal starting January. Senate Bill 1349, authored by Sen. Leland Yee, a democrat for the San Francisco and San Mateo counties, protects students and applicants at colleges and universities. “We had started to hear of this growing trend more nationally than in , where colleges and businesses are requiring individuals to hand over usernames and pass- words,” said Adam Keigwin, Yee’s chief of staff.
