The collaboration with Donate- lla earned him critical acclaim and the respect of his mentor Versace, who has since continued to advise him and even helped him get further funding for his show in Milan. The last show in 2009 got fantastic praise in the press and the collection was high in demand. The same year, Kristian took a break from his personal work and accepted an offer from Roberto Cavalli to become senior designer for the brands main collection. Now after a year of new experiences and challenges Kristian Aadnevik has decided to finally get back to his own brand and will showcase a new collection at London fashion week the 20th of September. NEW IPOD NANO The tiny, 1.54” touchscreen iPod Nano is 46% smaller and 42% lighter than its predecessor, and scarcely larger than the new iPod Shuffle. It has hard volume buttons, Voiceover (with 29 languages), FM radio, NIke+ support, and a pedometer, and Apple’s saying it has 24 hour battery life. There’s a clip, too, so you can attach it right to your clothes. It comes in the same four colors as the new Shuffle, as well as graphite red and a Global Fund-sponsored red. $149 for 8GB; $179 for the 16GB version.

Besides a series of new features and sleek new design, it can also serve as a watch, Steve Jobs joked at Wednesday’s Apple event introducing the newest iPods. “One of the members of our Board of Directors is going to use it as a watch,” Jobs said.

And it may not be such a far-fetched idea with the tiny new design, a wristband and the Nano’s clock functionality.

XWAVE FOR IPHONE Until humans evolve huge brains like the Talosians, it seems we’ll have to rely electronic headwear to allow us to control devices with our brainwaves – electronic headwear like the XWave from California-based company PLX Devices. The XWave is the first brainwave interface accessory for the iPhone/iPod touch/iPad that is worn over the head like a pair of headphones. Unfortunately, the device won’t allow you to scroll through playlists or select a contact to call with the power of your mind. Rather, like the Star Wars Force Trainer, it detects your attention and meditation levels for use in games and getting the old gray matter into shape.

Sure, there’s a big power unit on the wall, radiating (totally harmless) RF into the back of the TV, which has a coil inside to receive the juice. Describe your philosophy about the art of fashion. I don´t think fashion design can be considered as art, even though it implicates esthetic, emotional and cultural dimensions just as art does. But that doesn´t transform fashion to art for one very simple reason: art is made to please the eye, while fashion design really is created to cover function and necessity.

What advice do you have for a young person who strives to be a fashion designer? The anxiety of personal exceedance, the work, consistency and to confide in other professionals is habits that will help you to establish yourself as a designer. And of course, to find your own way to express yourself, and to find a personal style that will permit you to transform a garment into a dream.

Raw Talents Issue 129 Brian Donnelly aka KAWS

This month’s consolidated talent is the one and only Brian Donnelly aka KAWS, well known in the modern art/ street art community. He began his career as a gra- ffiti artist when still in high school, graffiti-bombing trains, walls, and billboards but has since then moved on working as a fine arts painter, illustrator, graphic designer, sculptor, toymaker, and product designer. KAWS was born 1974 in New Jersey, later moving to New York City in the 1990s. It was in New York where he started subverting imagery on billboards, bus shel- ters and phone booth advertisements. These hits were so skillfully executed—brushstrokes are never apparent in a KAWS painting—that often no one could distin- g u i s h t h e a r t i s t ’ s w o r k f r o m t h e o r i g i n a l a d v e r t i s e m e n t . The reworked advertisements were at first left alone, lasting for up to several months, but as KAWS’ popu- larity skyrocketed, the ads became increasingly sought after. Brian Donnelly has been compared to Jean-Michel Bas- quiat and Keith Haring, both of whom straddled the di- vide between street and institutional art. But Donnelly has by now arguably surpassed them with his one-man empire.

130 2beMag Brian Donnelly aka KAWS

Spongebob Squarepants drawn in KAWS’ signature style

His street-born cartoonish graphics—specifically spermatozoa-shaped figures with x-ed out eyes—have achieved a sub cultural iconography. He has applied this KAWS signature to his street art, a clothing line, toys and sculptures, and countless co-branding ventures with labels like A Bathing Ape and Marc Jacobs, Levi’s, Nike and Vans. In the late 90s, KAWS began to design and produce limited edition vinyl toys, an instant hit with the global art toy-collecting com- munity, especially in Japan, where this genre is well respected and widespread. To sell all the KAWS products KAWS opened a dazzling Masamichi Katayama–designed store in Tokyo in 2006 called OriginalFake. Are there artist that have inspired this genius? KAWS himself counts pop artist like Claes Oldenburg, Tom Wesselmann, Haruki Murakami and Jeff Koons as some of his main inspirations.

Through all of his projects, KAWS has successfully blurred the line between fine art and mass-produced merchandise. He uses his products to allow his imagery to infiltrate a larger audience than that of the fine art world. His most recent collaboration was with a clothing brand was with Comme des Garçons. As of August 2010, it is reported that Kaws has designed a limited edition bottle for Dos Equis, a Mexican beer brand. The bottle is slated for release in Mexico in early September 2010.

Original Fake is a Japanese fashion label. Started by Kaws as a frequent collaborator, the brand is one of only a few foreign started fashion labels to find success in the burgeoning Japanese fashion industry. The brand, relatively new to the fashion industry offers a new take on the street fashion style that has become so popular in recent years throug- hout Japan. The Original Fake label is a combination of various different products that combines a number of different aspects of Japanese and western street fashion, with t-shirt design, sneakers, jeans, socks, chairs, mats, sunglasses, and nume- rous other street wear products produced each year in the Autumn and Spring collections. The theme throughout most collections is an eye for classic designs mixed with modern images of cartoon-like, Japanese inspired graphics and logos.
