Press Release 17 PRESS RELEASE 17. August 2021 CAPTIVATE! FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE 90’s. CURATED BY CLAUDIA SCHIFFER 15 September 2021 – 9 January 2022 Claudia Schiffer, Supermodel and global fashion icon, curates her first exhibition. Captivate! brings some of the most impactful ‘90s fashion photography created in the analogue era, to the audience. With approximately 150 exhibits, Schiffer illustrates the impact and significance of fashion photography, and the people who created some of the most famous images in the world. Rarely seen material meets major photographic works of more than 20 of the most influential fashion photographers, in a rare and for some, first time group showing – from Richard Avedon and Juergen Teller to Ellen von Unwerth. Schiffer evokes the feeling of dynamic change within the fashion world of the nineties, expanding beyond traditional ideals of beauty. Runway moving images and memorabilia from her private archive complete the story. “Claudia Schiffer is a major figure on the fashion scene as well as an informed observer, and this is precisely what makes her view of the subject so unique,“ says Felix Krämer, General Director of the Kunstpalast. “I am delighted that Claudia has accepted our invitation to open up to the audience an individual and knowledgeable view of 1990s fashion photography, as a first-time curator.“ In thematic sections, Schiffer reveals key aspects of fashion photography: iconic imagery of her colleagues such as Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss or Cindy Crawford demonstrate the ‘Supermodel phenomenon’ and space is dedicated to the boom in global advertising campaigns, as well as the all-important ‘cover shot’. Visitors can experience the runway and see behind the scenes of fashion shows and shoots. There is also from the curator’s own archive, a glimpse into Schiffer’s personal story of the decade. August 2021 “Fashion photography is a great cipher of trends and dreams. While born out of the moment, it can achieve a timeless status and capture a bigger story”, Claudia Schiffer emphasizes. “The most memorable images are often provocative and challenge our perceptions of femininity and beauty. The 1990s was a watershed decade that welcomed fashion photography, and photographers as a driving force in visual culture”, adds the curator. Captivate! shows the numerous formats of fashion photography in the pre-digital age – from fine art prints to Polaroids, contact sheets, fashion magazines, to campaigns and sed cards. It also highlights the strong contrasts between iconic cover shoots, runway imagery and candid backstage snaps. “Where the 1980s was defined by perfectionist high glamour, the 90s was about energy, reality and personality and the show also captures that big shift.“ summarises Claudia Schiffer. “Young designers, photographers, stylists and art directors, as well as hair and makeup artists emerged and fundamentally changed the way we view fashion and design. I really wanted Captivate! to capture the visual experimentation and freedom of expression.“ Accompanying the exhibition is a coffee table book published by Prestel globally at a price of 55 euros, museum edition 48 euros. Captivate! Includes a conversation between Claudia Schiffer und Felix Krämer, personal essays from fashion luminaries Carine Roitfeld, Christiane Arp and Ellen Von Unwerth, as well as quotes from leading industry figures such as Anna Wintour, Edward Enninful, Grace Coddington, Donatella Versace and Valentino Garavani. This stunning book also draws on a rich panorama of amazing characters and places, which made the decade so memorable. The exhibition features: Richard Avedon, Gilles Bensimon, Angelica Blechschmidt, Walter Chin, Michael Comte, Corinne Day, Patrick Demarchelier, Arthur Elgort, Ross CONTACT DETAILS FOR PRESS KUNSTPALAST PAGE Marina Schuster Christina Bolius Ehrenhof 4-5 2/3 40479 Düsseldorf, Germany Head of Press / Press Press Officer Spokesperson T +49 (0)211-566 42 502 www.kunstpalast.de Tel +49 (0)211-566 42 500 [email protected] [email protected] PRESS RELEASE 17. Lifestyle FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 2015 Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen, center, celebrates at the end of the show from the Colcci Summer collection at Sao Paulo Fashion Week in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Wednesday, April 15, 2015. Bundchen, the Brazilian supermodel who has lit up catwalks around the world for 20 years, is retiring from the runway. — AP photos SUPERMODEL GISELE BUNDCHEN MAKES TEARY LAST CATWALK TURN here were tears, hugs, and a standing ovation as supermodel Gisele Bundchen strode the Tcatwalk one last time on her home turf in Brazil on Wednesday. Bundchen, the world’s top- earning model, made her final sashay down the runway at Sao Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW), the same event where she made her debut 20 years ago. She opened and closed the show for Brazilian label Colcci, bringing full circle a runway career that launched her to stardom. In the first row were fami- ly and friends she invited including her parents and American football star husband Tom Brady. Bundchen, 34, appeared calm and smiled. The whole show took about 20 minutes. But when a crowd of men and women models strode out in jeans and white T-shirts with her image on them, she stayed composed for a bit before bursting into tears. Bundchen hugged friends and waved to well- wishers. The Brazilian bombshell announced last month she was retiring from runway modeling, saying she wanted to spend more time with husband New England Patriots quarterback Brady, and their two children, Benjamin and Vivian. She also told Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo: “My body she’s at the height of her powers.

  • Kate Moss Or the Girl Next Door? — the Effectiveness of Cosmetics Advertising
Journal of Advertising Research Vol. 52, No. 1, 2012 www.journalofadvertisingresearch.com Take Your Pick: Kate Moss or the Girl Next Door? — The Effectiveness of Cosmetics Advertising Michael Antioco EMLYON Business School Dirk Smeesters Rotterdam School of Management Aline Le Boedec Finaref INTRODUCTION Marketing literature is replete with evidence of the positive effects of using attractive communicators and models on opinion change, product evaluation, and brand perception and recall (Baker and Churchill, 1977; Joseph, 1982). It has been demonstrated that physically attractive communicators are more liked than plain or unattractive communicators. By extension, if a person has a positive attitude toward a communicator, she or he will evaluate that communicator’s message in positive terms (Joseph, 1982). The use of attractive communicators to increase advertising effectiveness seems to be appropriate. It appears, however, that many marketers have decided to apply this idea at its extreme. Often, models in advertising represent highly idealized images of physical attractiveness. This is especially true when considering the models’ body-mass index given increasing obesity in Western societies (Chandon and Wansink, 2007). In a March 2010 issue, the Guardian asked, “Why Are Models Still So Thin?” Some runway models presenting Riccardo Tisci, Dolce & Gabbana—and others representing Prada’s Miu Miu autumn/winter ready-to-wear collection—looked skeletal. Yet, models are a mirror for many young women and, most agree, should project an image of beauty and health rather than offer the perception of encouraging eating disorders. Moreover, it recently seems that not all marketers have agreed that such idealized images of physical attractiveness are the best way to increase advertising effectiveness.

Volume 10. One Germany in Europe, 1989 – 2009 Model Claudia Schiffer becomes an International Beauty Icon (2004) The msn-internet magazine “beautylive” recounts the stunning success story of supermodel Claudia Schiffer, who took the fashion world by storm in the early 1990s and quickly became one of the world’s most photographed faces. Together with fellow German models Nadja Auermann and Tatjana Patitz, and German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, Schiffer helped the German fashion industry gain new relevance and enhanced international prestige. What the following piece lacks in sophistication, it makes up for in breathless enthusiasm. Published in 2004, thus well after the peak of Schiffer’s modeling career, the article is a testimony to her continued hold on the German imagination. Claudia Schiffer – the Beauty Icon She is the muse of fashion designers, the face of the nineties, one of the most beautiful women in the world. The Claudia Schiffer era has catapulted the experience of being a model into a different sphere – it has made the girls at the top into stars worthy of veneration. Because whoever wants to be at the very top must be able to do more than just pose beautifully. This is the story of a charismatic blonde, a German businesswoman, a mother of two – the story of a star. The discovery: Where do we begin? It all began with all-night dancing in a discotheque on the Kö in Düsseldorf in 1987. It was October. Claudia Schiffer was still in school back then and out with a few friends. • Pirelli Calendar 2010 by Terry Richardson London
Pirelli Calendar 2010 by Terry Richardson London, 19 November 2009 – The 2010 Pirelli Calendar, now in its 37th edition, was presented to the press and to guests and collectors from around the world, at its global premiere in London. The much-awaited appointment with ‘The Cal’, a cult object for over 40 years, was held this year at Old Billingsgate, the suggestive late 19th century building on the banks of the Thames, where from 1875 to 1982 it housed the capital city’s fish market. Following China, immortalized by Patrick Demarchelier in the 2008 edition, and Botswana shot by Peter Beard a year later, 2010 is the year of Brazil and of American photographer Terry Richardson, the celebrated “enfant terrible” known for his provocative and outrageous approach. In the 30 images that scan the months of 2010, Terry Richardson depicts a return to a playful, pure Eros. Through his lens he runs after fantasies and provokes, but with a simplicity that sculpts and captures the sunniest side of femininity. He portrays a woman who is captivating because she is natural, who plays with stereotypes in order to undo them, who makes irony the only veil she covers herself with. This is a return to the natural, authentic atmospheres and images of the ‘60s and ‘70s. It is a clear homage to the Calendar’s origins, a throwback to the first editions by Robert Freeman (1964), Brian Duffy (1965) and Harry Peccinotti (1968 and 1969). Terry Richardson, like his illustrious predecessors, has chosen a simple kind of photography, without retouching, where naturalness prevails over technique and becomes the key to removing artificial excesses in vogue today to reveal the true woman underneath.
