The Pirelli 2005 Calendar THE PIRELLI 2005 CALENDAR Rio de Janeiro, 18 November 2004 –This evening will see the world premiere of the Pirelli 2005 Calendar at the Copacabana Fort, the most exclusive diary date for lovers of beauty, followers of fashion and photography connoisseurs. The Pirelli 2005 Calendar was produced by Patrick Demarchelier, a world-renowned photographer, in the spectacular setting of Rio de Janeiro, the city that never sleeps. The metropolis that, as Naomi Campbell says (appearing for the third time in the “The Cal”) “reflects the Brazilian people’s energetic and positive spirit”. Demarchelier has grasped and assimilated the spirit of Brazil (‘O espirito do Brazil’ is in fact the title chosen for the backstage film) and of Rio de Janeiro, a city dominated by strong contrasts. His black and white photographs, investigate the most mysterious aspects of the models of the “Pirelli Cal 2005” seeking out the invisible source of their allure. Alongside Naomi Campbell (who made her debut at just 16 years of age in the 1987 Calendar by Terence Donovan, returning in 1995 for the one by Richard Avedon) are Filippa Hamilton and Isabeli Fontana (already chosen by Bruce Weber for the 2003 edition), Adriana Lima, Diana Dondoe, Erin Wasson, Euguenia Vodianova, Julia Stegner, Liliane Ferrarezi, Marija Vujovic, Michelle Buswell, “Valentina” and Valeria Bohm. This is truly an international event with three Brazilians, two Americans, one Russian, one Montenegrin, one Romanian, one Swede and one German. “The Pirelli Cal is the world’s most prestigious calendar. It is pure art”, says Demarchelier, whose masterly use of light, strong contrasts and striking portraits are quite the opposite of Nick Knight’s imaginative and highly coloured calendar last year. The Pirelli 2005 Calendar thus marks a return to the traditional technique of black and white photography that also characterised the calendars by Arthur Elgort (1990), Peter Lindberg (1996), Richard Avedon (1997), Bruce Weber (1998) and Herb Ritts (1999). As the art director, Douglas Lloyd, states, “every image is a graphic portrait, classic but at the same time modern, exalting the beauty of the female body.” The French photographer uses a personal technique that ensures the immediacy of the result, taking direct positive shots on Polaroid film. His photography stands out for its capacity to apply the most sophisticated studio techniques to spectacular, luminous locations, creating images that are fluid and at the same time immersed in nature. Demarchelier has chosen two particular locations to immortalise his muses and to re- create in the open, the environment of the photographic studio: a dune on the beach and the luxuriant garden of a colonial house. The elegance and fresh spontaneity of the young models give the photos a sense of expression and natural beauty, in line with the exuberance of Brazil. The result is a truly unique version of the Pirelli Calendar, made up for the first time of 22 pages. The Calendar closes with a lively collage of shots “stolen” by the great photographer in a famous Rio discotheque, during the party that concluded the shooting. Always attentive to detail, Demarchelier chose the model’s clothes with particular care. These, he comments, “confer elegance and an aura of mystery and emotion on women”. Intriguing and sensual, the garments were specially designed to underline contrasts and geometrical lines. Standing out amongst the clothes worn by the models is the Pirelli Pzero line, to which Demarchelier dedicates his August portrait. The twenty two year old Brazilian model Valeria Bohm, who won the “Garota Tim” competition promoted by Tim Brazil in collaboration with MTV, also took part in the photo sessions. Voted for by SMS, she beat off competition from the other 14 splendid girls specially selected by the agency Ford Models. “This is my first great chance”, Valeria commented, on winning her place in the legendary Pirelli 2005 Calendar. .

  • Pirelli Calendar 2010 by Terry Richardson London
Pirelli Calendar 2010 by Terry Richardson London, 19 November 2009 – The 2010 Pirelli Calendar, now in its 37th edition, was presented to the press and to guests and collectors from around the world, at its global premiere in London. The much-awaited appointment with ‘The Cal’, a cult object for over 40 years, was held this year at Old Billingsgate, the suggestive late 19th century building on the banks of the Thames, where from 1875 to 1982 it housed the capital city’s fish market. Following China, immortalized by Patrick Demarchelier in the 2008 edition, and Botswana shot by Peter Beard a year later, 2010 is the year of Brazil and of American photographer Terry Richardson, the celebrated “enfant terrible” known for his provocative and outrageous approach. In the 30 images that scan the months of 2010, Terry Richardson depicts a return to a playful, pure Eros. Through his lens he runs after fantasies and provokes, but with a simplicity that sculpts and captures the sunniest side of femininity. He portrays a woman who is captivating because she is natural, who plays with stereotypes in order to undo them, who makes irony the only veil she covers herself with. This is a return to the natural, authentic atmospheres and images of the ‘60s and ‘70s. It is a clear homage to the Calendar’s origins, a throwback to the first editions by Robert Freeman (1964), Brian Duffy (1965) and Harry Peccinotti (1968 and 1969). Terry Richardson, like his illustrious predecessors, has chosen a simple kind of photography, without retouching, where naturalness prevails over technique and becomes the key to removing artificial excesses in vogue today to reveal the true woman underneath.

  • 'Dior Couture,' with Stunning
bitebookreviews ior Couture,’ with stunning pho- tography by Patrick Demarcheli- ‘Der, is a gorgeous must-have book chronicling the glory days of the Parisian fashion house established by Christian Dior shortly after the end of the Second World War. Dior, one of the legendary couturiers of all time, is famous for revo- lutionizing the world of haute-couture with the launch in 1947 of his first col- lection of hour-glass silhouettes, chris- tened the ‘New Look.’ Although he would die ten years later at the age of 52, Dior was a pow- erful muse to his successors, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Fer- ré, and John Galliano. “The delicate stitches of Christian Dior’s couture are reminiscent of a spider’s web, mir- roring nature, and these photographs capture the silhouettes like flower buds about to bloom,” American art- ist, Jeff Koons writes in the book’s foreword. Demarchelier — a veteran fash- ion photographer who has shot editorials for the likes of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle, along with campaigns for Dior, Yves Saint Lau- rent, and Chanel — captures more than 100 gowns, suits and coats from the entire span of Chris- tian Dior haute couture through to recent creations by Galliano. Beautiful locations — like a Bei- jing movie studio, New York’s Times Square, and Paris’ Opéra Garnier — serve as the back- drop for these exquisite pieces, worn by models including Gem- ma Ward, Karlie Kloss, Agyness Deyn and Natalia Vodianova. Ingrid Sischy, International Editor for Vanity Fair’s Eu- ropean editions and former Interview Magazine Editor, wrote the introduction to the 240-page book.

  • Präsentation Des Kalenders 2020 “Looking for Juliet” Von Paolo Roversi in Verona

  • Organized Crime in Bulgaria: Markets and Trends
ORGANIZED CRIME IN BULGARIA: MARKETS AND TRENDS The present report builds upon various studies published by the Center for the Study of Democracy throughout the last decade which have focused on specific aspects of organized crime in Bulgaria (contraband, the drug market, tax fraud, human trafficking, arms proliferation, etc.), the systemic spread of corruption, and the linkages between the two. The report presents the latest trends and manifestations (or “market niches”) of syndicate crime and its particularly damaging effects. It goes further to offer a historical review of the facts and available expertise in the area, and to draw conclusions about the origin, characteristics and developmental features of organized criminality in Bulgaria in the context of the transition to democracy. This report attempts to present an authentic picture of organized crime in Bulgaria, by identifying its constitu- ent features and major trends. The research team has used information from all available sources, analyzing it through several, complementary methods. Collecting empirical data about clandestine and hidden markets is a hard task, which can sometimes put the researchers at risk. However, it cannot be dispensed with, particularly as the so called objective data (police and judicial crime statistics) provided by public bodies is often incomplete and sometimes manipulated. This paper also furthers expertise exchange through a public-private partnership. This publication has been produced with the financial assistance of the European Union. Its contents are the sole responsibility of the Center for the Study of Deocracy and can under no circumstances be regarded as reflecting the position of the European Union.
