ESENCIA PREFACIO Como se ha escrito miles de veces, la naturaleza última de la realidad de la esencia no puede expresarse con palabras. Sin embargo, esta realidad se manifiesta en formas esenciales puras de la conciencia y la experiencia que llamamos "aspectos" de la esencia, como el amor, la fuerza, la paz, la compasión o la conciencia, por nombrar sólo unos cuantos. La experiencia de estos aspectos es totalmente palpable y está sujeta a criterios precisos y profundos, gracias a lo cual son posibles las descripciones verbales y el análisis que este libro se propone llevar a cabo. El concepto de esencia se basa en tradiciones espirituales como el sufismo y algunas escuelas del budismo, aunque no siempre utilizan la palabra "esencia". En su acepción más común, "esencia" significa el aspecto más verdadero, real o sustancial de algo. La esencia es lo que permite que algo sea lo que es. A lo largo de este libro, la utilización que hagamos de este término permitirá que vaya haciéndose cada vez más claro, y, de hecho, al final veremos que su entendimiento "espiritual" y "común" convergen en un camino más profundo, más sutil e incluso más sencillo de lo que al principio resulta posible apreciar. Empezar a entender la esencia significa empezar a no dejarse engañar por nuestras ilusiones. Este libro describe la forma en que muchas cosas, en el trabajo espiritual y psicológico, son tomadas erróneamente por la esencia. También describe la pérdida de las cualidades de la esencia y la subsiguiente separación del verdadero ser, arrojando así luz sobre toda la historia del sufrimiento personal que surge de la realidad ilusoria de la identidad del ego individual. La vida de la mayoría de las personas conlleva un esfuerzo constante para "mantener a flote", defender, promover y mejorar esta identidad, cuyo estatus como estructura mental nunca se pone en duda. Por esto, la liberación y la alegría que supone conocer nuestra verdadera identidad se pierde, a menos que aceptemos la manifestación del deseo de una experiencia más profunda y verdadera del ser, pues, en efecto, tenemos la oportunidad de buscar la verdad sobre nosotros mismos. Este libro presenta un método para la recuperación y desarrollo de la esencia, de manera que pueda funcionar como un agente transformador en el proceso de la realización personal. A lo largo de esta andadura hacia la realización, la manifestación estable de las cualidades de la esencia desembocará en la sorprendente e inusual resolución de una antigua dicotomía, una inesperada redención de la vida personal: la realización de la "perla inapreciable", descrita en el capítulo cinco, que constituye la solución del aparente conflicto entre la vida del "hombre de mundo" y la del "hombre de espíritu". 4 ESENCIA CAPÍTULO UNO PRESENCIA Y ESENCIA Rara vez vive la gente la experiencia de la esencia, y nunca la reconoce como tal, por eso empezaremos echando un vistazo a la cualidad de una experiencia relacionada que se vive y comenta con más frecuencia: la cualidad de la presencia. La expresión "estoy presente" se utiliza a menudo en círculos espirituales y psicológicos, asumiendo que su significado es comprendido. Preguntamos: ¿qué quiere decir esta expresión? ¿Qué significa realmente estar presente? La mayoría de las veces la expresión no se usa de una manera clara o precisa; la mayor parte de las personas, si se les pregunta, son incapaces de explicar qué quieren decir con "presente". Pero debe haber una condición real que garantice el empleo de la expresión "estoy presente". ¿Cuál es esa condición? La expresión significa literalmente que hay un "yo" que se encuentra presente en este momento. ¿Es exacto este significado literal? Obviamente, cuando decimos "estoy presente" no queremos decir exactamente que somos conscientes de ello, de otra manera lo diríamos mucho más a menudo. Existe una diferencia entre el significado de "estoy presente" y el de "soy consciente", aunque ambas expresiones pueden coincidir y con frecuencia lo hagan. ¿Cuál es la diferencia? ¿Qué nos hace decir "presente" en lugar de "consciente"? ¿Qué diferencia existe entre la experiencia de "estoy presente" y la experiencia de "soy consciente"? ¿Cuál es el elemento que explica la presencia? Indaguemos el significado de presencia contemplando y analizando su experiencia real. Examinemos una situación conocida, la experiencia estética. Mis ojos captan la visión de una hermosa rosa roja. De pronto, mi visión es más clara, mi sentido del olfato más profundo. Es como si estuviera dentro de mi visión, como si estuviese dentro de mi olfato. Al mirar, oler y apreciar la rosa, es como si hubiera algo más en mí. Este fenómeno no se limita al hecho de una conciencia ampliada que me hace sentir una experiencia más profunda de la rosa a través de mis ojos y fosas nasales, una experiencia más honda a través de mis sentidos. En la experiencia de una presencia ampliada, es como si encontrase mis percepciones a mitad de camino. Es como si algo de mí, algo más o menos palpable, estuviese presente en mis ojos y en mi nariz. Algo en mi interior, además de mis canales perceptivos, está participando en la experiencia de la rosa. Y este algo no se refiere a mi memoria ni a asociaciones pasadas con las rosas. En cierto sentido, mi conciencia aumentada mejora realmente la presencia de la rosa, o de cualquier otro objeto estético, como una pieza musical o una pintura. A veces, una mayor conciencia mejora sólo una cierta cualidad de un objeto: la belleza de la rosa, su color, su olor o su frescura. Pero otras veces se siente la rosa en cuanto rosa, como presencia en sí misma. Si esta experiencia es suficientemente profunda nuestra propia presencia aparece realzada. "Es como si estuviera más aquí", dice la expresión. ¿Pero qué es esta presencia? ¿Acaso hay realmente un "yo" que está más presente, o qué ocurre exactamente? Naturalmente, la experiencia estética no se limita a una respuesta a la belleza. Podría ser la experiencia del sobrecogimiento que sentimos ante la inmensidad del océano o la grandeza de una cordillera de montañas. Puede ser la experiencia del sentimiento de admiración cuando uno presencia el heroísmo de una persona o un grupo, o el coraje o la audacia de un explorador. Estamos considerando los momentos, por raros que sean, en que sentimos como si hubiera algo más de nosotros compartiendo la experiencia. Nos proponemos comprender qué significa "más de 5 ESENCIA nosotros". ¿Más de qué? ¿Cuál es el elemento que proporciona a nuestra experiencia esta sensación de presencia? Tampoco ignoramos que algunas personas tienen una presencia superior a la de las demás. Decimos "tiene más presencia", o "tiene una presencia imponente". Pero ¿podemos especificar a qué nos referimos? No nos estamos refiriendo a la cualidad de una presencia de ánimo, que tiene una mayor conciencia. La "presencia" misma es algo más que eso. La presencia también puede sentirse en momentos de intensa y profunda emoción, cuando una persona sufre un estado emocional que no puede controlar o inhibir, cuando está envuelta de todo corazón en una sensación, totalmente inmersa en ella, de una manera libre y espontánea sin ocultarlo ni oponerse. Esto sucede normalmente sólo cuando dicha persona se siente totalmente justificada para sentir esas emociones. Por ejemplo, un individuo podría experimentar una gran pérdida, como la muerte de un ser querido, y sentirse justificado para experimentar dolor y tristeza. Podría estar tan absorto, tan inmerso en la tristeza, que el sentimiento aumentase como si fuera profundísimo, ahondándose a mayores profundidades y creciendo en intensidad. Este estado podría llegar a hacerse tan profundo e intenso que lo sentiría de una forma más densa y espesa cuanto más inmerso en él se encontrase, tan profundo y hondo que se experimentase a sí mismo como penetrado por una especie de presencia. Es como si la profundidad y la hondura fueran entonces una presencia real y palpable que se sintiera de una forma muy nítida. Otro ejemplo: una persona podría sentirse justificada para sentir enfado e indignación al ser insultada o tratada injustamente. El enfado se convierte en algo tan poderoso que en algún momento, si insiste sin reservas en este sentimiento, la persona experimentará una especie de fuerza que lo alimenta. Esta fuerza o poder se manifiesta con tanta claridad que asume una presencia palpable. Es como si el poder creciente de la emoción desbordada provocase todavía más a la persona. Se siente a sí misma tan presente en la emoción, como en su centro, que una presencia sustancial y claramente palpable parece infundir la emoción y llenar el cuerpo. Su cuerpo se siente lleno de poder, tan intensamente que ese mismo poder se transforma en una presencia. Esta presencia parece ser la fuente de la emoción y del poder, como si brotasen de ella. En tales momentos, la persona experimenta un intenso contacto con el cuerpo, a la vez que una sorprendente capacidad para usarlo y controlarlo. Es como si en ese momento la persona existiera realmente en sus brazos, por ejemplo, por lo que puede manejarlos con una capacidad inusual de control, eficiencia e inmediatez. Entonces, ¿qué es esta presencia que reside en los brazos, en el cuerpo, y que parece proporcionarles poder, energía, contacto y conciencia? Como estamos viendo, la presencia es más una realidad que una idea o una metáfora.

    EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING ‘He who tastes, knows’ Proverb Indirect and Impact Teaching In many spiritual traditions a teacher will often act in ways which seem inexplicable to ex- ternal observers or even their own students. In reality the teacher is trying to guide the seeker to an intuitive perception of a wider and deeper reality: “For when this wise and deeper world opens, everyday life, even the most trivial thing of it, grows loaded with truth. After all, is not life itself filled with wonders, mysteries and unfathomable possibilities, far beyond our discur- sive understanding.” A teacher may use unusual or indirect methods to provoke a sudden shift in the disciple’s consciousness in order to reveal a wider perspective and understanding: Tokusan was a great scholar. Learning that there was such a thing as Zen ignoring all the scriptures and directly laying hands on one’s soul, he came to Ryutan to be instructed in the doctrine. One day Tokusan was sitting outside trying to see into the mystery of Zen. Ryutan said, ‘Why don’t you come in?’ Replied Tokusan, ‘It is pitch dark.’ A candle was lighted and handed over to Tokusan. When the latter was at the point of taking it, Ryutan suddenly blew the light out, whereupon the mind of Tokusan was opened. Hyakujo one day went out attending his master Baso. A flock of wild geese was seen flying and Baso asked: ‘What are they?’ ‘They are wild geese, sir.’ ‘Whither are they flying?’ ‘They have flown away.’ Baso abruptly taking hold of Hyakujo’s nose, gave it a twist.

    A LIVING ORGANIC SPIRITUAL TEACHING ‘We work in all places and at all times .’ Saying Flexibility and Adaptability The ‘Great Teaching’ is universal and timeless in its essential nature, although its forms may alter as it adapts to changing circumstances. Such a developmental teaching is a living entity, essentially applicable at all times and in all circumstances, and is able to operate within any culture and in any language: ‘The clothes may vary, but the person is the same .’ The actual position and intention of the Tradition does not change, but it must have some flexibility because of changing social, geographical, political and other considerations. In former times we used verbal and other communications which were correct for the time. In primitive times we used primitive techniques, even though we had more sophisticated techniques which we could have used. The reason primitive techniques were used was because there was nothing strange or hostile about them. (1) The Teaching is conveyed in response to the needs of the community to which it is directed. It presents itself in a form which is perceptible and comprehensible to each person in direct accordance with their individual needs and capacities. “People differ at different times – what is appropriate for one person in one civilization may not be useful for another. Conditions of life change, understandings progress and regress, and the ‘ground’ on which the Teaching is based changes. Since it is a ‘growing, organic process,’ it becomes different in different eras.” The principle of ‘time, place and people’ refers to projecting a teaching afresh in each time and culture, in accordance with the real characteristics of a situation.
