“An outstanding retelling of the story.” —BYU Book and Play Review

Musical. Book and lyrics by Ken Pickering. Music by John Dawson. From the Brothers Grimm. Cast: 15+ actors, flexible. A musical for children of all ages, this bewitching dramatization of the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm has all the favorite characters: beautiful Snow White and her father, the good-hearted king; her step- mother, the wicked queen who likes to admire herself as she chants, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the of them all;” the dwarfs and of course the gallant, handsome prince. The staging of this dra- matization can range from the very elaborate and spectacular to the very simple. Wonderful effects can be achieved by lighting on the bar- est of stages. The diagrams and suggestions in the production notes at the back of the script illustrate how the premiere production at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, was mounted with a unit set. Although the play is divided into 11 scenes, there is no break in the action unless an intermission is desired. Unlike other adapta- tions, no mention is made in this script of Snow White’s fair skin so that performers of any ethnicity may play the role. The playwright has added other interesting characters, and John Dawson has provided an enchanting score and sound effects. Set: areas are designated for various scenes with minimal scenery arranged in view of the audience. Costumes: fairy tale. Approximate running time: 90 minutes. Music score available. Fully orchestrated musical accompaniment/SFX CD available. Code: SY8.
