Snow White and the Evil Queen

Preshow

Setting: Center stage, in front of black split curtains. Flown: 2 set pieces: exterior castle view and interior window- slightly foreground.

Queen sits, slightly turned, with the baby Snow White in her arms. On one side is her (ebony) embroidery stand. At her other side, standing, is the King, looking down fondly on his family.

**It is snowing.**

Narrator Chase: A long time ago

Narrator Issac: In a kingdom far away

Narrator Maya: Lived a noble King,

Narrator Aubrey: His kindly Queen,

Narrator Ella: --And their beautiful baby Princess…

Queen: My daughter…your skin is as white as the snow—your lips are as red as blood—your hair is as black as ebony—my beloved Snow White!

(Tableau freezes. Lights dim on them.)

Narrator Tatum: But, alas!

Narrator Chase: The kingdom could not long rejoice—

Narrator Issac: The kindly Queen did not live through the winter—

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 1 (King moves to cover the Queen, and lifts the baby from her arms; he cradles Snow White in sadness, bowing his head.)

(Main curtain falls briefly.)

Narrator Ella: So he married again…

All Narrators:--to a Queen NOT so kind--!!

(Tremendous thunder and strobe lightning, as curtain rises.)

Setting: The throne room of the Evil Queen. Right of center is a platform; on it, on one side is a cauldron; on the other is a tall bookstand, holding an enormous book of magic and bottles of herbs. A staircase leads from the platform to a draperied alcove, where hangs the “magic mirror.”

(The Evil Queen, her arms raised, has her back to the audience, and faces the mirror, during the crashing of the thunder.)

(In the foreground, unseen, is the Assembly, kneeling. A group is on the apron. There are also groups on both sets of stairs. A guard and a page are on each side of the stage.)

(Pleased, and chuckling to herself, the Evil Queen descends the staircase; as she reaches the platform, the two pages cross to her and take her hands as she steps down.)

Pages: (bowing) Your Majesty--!

Evil Queen: Whatever.

Guards: (stepping forward, and banging their lances) All hail the Queen!

All Assembly: All hail the Queen!

Evil Queen: (with distaste) What are all these peasants doing here in my throne room?

Nice Page: They’re your subjects, Your Majesty—

Evil Page: --your slaves, Your Majesty!!

Nice Page: They are here for the yearly assembly!

Evil Queen: --Ugh!—You mean the boring line of pathetic peons who do nothing but ask me for favors—blah, blah, blah—all morning?

Evil Page: Yes, Your Highness! Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 3

Nice Page: --as the late King required by law—

Evil Queen: I KNOW WHAT THE LAW IS!

Nice Page: --just sayin’—

Evil Queen: Oh, very well! Let’s get it over with!

(The apron Assembly lines up and crosses one unit at a time to the Evil Queen; they bow, kneel, or curtsy. Evil Page motions them forward, Nice Page motions them off.)

Evil Queen: No way, Jose!

Peasant 7, Debbie: Please, our children—

Evil Queen: Absolutely not.

Peasant 8, Irisianna: My Queen, if you—

Evil Queen: Not a chance!

(2 subjects are left. They talk between themselves)

Peasant 9-Trouble-Maker Vienna: That’s the fairest in the land??

Peasant 10-Trouble-Maker Lea: There must be no one else living here--!

Evil Queen: WHAT DID YOU SAY??

Pleasant 9-Trouble-Maker Vienna: I said, “That’s the fairest in the land!”

Pleasant 10-Trouble-Maker Lea: And I said, “No one living here compares!”

Evil Page: Oh, you are so busted--!

Evil Queen: GUARDS!! (to Peasants) You are banished from my kingdom forever!— Not only am I the fairest—I am also the most generous—to have let you live!! TAKE THEM AWAY!!

(The Guards exit with the peasants.)

(Stage Left Stair Assembly stand and hurry to line up, but the Queen ignores them.)

Evil Queen: (straightens her collar) Well, we’re done here!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 5 Left Stair Assembly: (assorted complaints) “No!” “But--!” “What about us?” “That’s not fair-!” etc.

Evil Queen: Get out!!

(The Assembly scatters.)

Evil Queen: Ah, it’s good to be the Queen!!

(A crack of thunder.)

(The Evil Queen sweeps off right, followed by the Pages. The Evil Page is smirking and nodding his approval. The Nice Page is shaking his head in dismay.)

Scene 2A

(From down the aisles enter well-dressed and happy members of the court, all friends of Snow White, carrying beautifully wrapped presents. They laugh and chatter, and try to remember to be quiet—they are surprising Snow White on her birthday! One of the friends is a Musician; she plays a jolly tune, that the others dance to.)

(The Friends gather around, as the Nursemaid, her hands over Snow White’s eyes, walks her into the throne room.)

(The friends jump and yell, thrusting gifts.)

All Friends (including N/S): SURPRISE--!!!

Friend Kiara: Best Wishes, Snow White!

Friend Bryce: Happy Birthday, Princess!

Snow White: Oh, my!—How did you know??

(The Nursemaid admits it with a curtsy; the friends laugh in delight, and do a little dance around Snow White with the gifts.)

Snow White: And gifts? There is no need to give me gifts!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 6

Friend Carleen: Oh, but there is!

Friend Kassandra: Of course there is!

Friend Savannah: You always do so much for US, Snow White!

Friend Cameron: You remember all of OUR birthdays—

Friend Summer: You are always there to listen to our troubles—

Friend Evelyn: You give us your advice—

Friend Alora: -- and your help—

Friend Sierra: And never ask anything from us in return--!

Friend Sydney: (stepping up to her with a beautiful package) Happy birthday, Snow White.

Snow White (sincerely) Thank you. Thank you all!

Giddy Friend Sydnie: Snow White, today you are 18!

Musician Friend: Do you feel any different??

Snow White: (laughing) No, I am the same Snow White that I have always been.

Friend Emma: A cheerful, kind, loyal, generous Princess.

Friend Alexis: That is why you will be a wonderful Queen one day.

(They all kneel to her.)

Snow White: Please stop—when we are together, I am not your Princess, nor yet your Queen—I am your friend. And thank you all for being my friends!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 7 (Impishly, Snow White reaches behind the platform, and pulls out gifts for all her friends.)

Friend Victoria: You knew all along--!

Friend Tyler: Oh, that is SO Snow White--!

(The Nice Page runs in, very upset, looking over his shoulder.)

Nice Page: The Queen!—The Queen is coming--!

(The Nice Page runs straight through, and the friends ((including N/S)) scream and scatter. The Nursemaid curtsies and backs out. Presents are abandoned. Snow White is left alone to face her Step Mother.)

Scene 2B

(The Evil Queen enters from Stage R, and kicks any presents out of her way, then turns a sickening smile on Snow White.)

(The Pages and Guards have returned to their original positions.)

(Snow White is a very self-possessed young woman, and holds her own with dignity.)

Evil Queen: Well, well, Snow White!—You look so grown-up! How old are you now…12? 13?

Snow White: I am 18 today, Step Mother.

Evil Queen: Oh? Such a big girl now. I remember holding you in my arms as a baby—

Snow White: --You never held me…

Evil Queen: --And helping you take your first step—

Snow White: --You never helped me…

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 8 Evil Queen: --Reading you your first book—

Snow White: --You never read to me…!

Evil Queen: --Teaching you all the things that a mother can impart to her daughter—

Snow White: You never taught me anything!

Evil Queen: No?

Snow White: No!

Evil Queen: (shrugs) Whatever. (She strolls away from Snow White, as she feigns to think.) My point is, now that you are grown, you should be thinking of how you will make your way in the world…

Snow White: What do you mean…?

Evil Queen: (laughs) Really, Snow White, you ARE 15—

Snow White: 18!

Evil Queen: Whatever. I can’t continue to support you forever--!

Snow White: What?? But, my father was King! My Mother was Queen!—That makes me a Pr—

Evil Queen: (fingers over Snow White’s lips) Aughn—

Nice Page: --Princess--!

Evil Queen: Silence, Worm!!

Snow White: This is my home, my kingdom, my people!—the only life I have ever known! One day I will be Qu—

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 9 Evil Queen: Aughn—

Nice Page: --Queen--!

Evil Queen: WHAT DID YOU SAY--??

Evil Page: He said—YOU will be Queen forever, your Majesty!!

Evil Queen: Guards!! Take him away!!

(The guards remove the Nice Page, Stage L)

**option:

Evil Queen: One more word from you, and you will be thrown into the dungeon!!— Forever!! **

Evil Queen: (whirls on Snow White) You, Queen? You have NO IDEA what that means! To rule a kingdom of ignorant savages—to defend your rule from treacherous enemies year after year--! To be strong enough to be feared—hard enough to be hated—

Snow White: I know it is a large responsibility—

Evil Queen: You, Snow White, are naïve and weak—a simpering simpleton, too nice to get out of your own way!

Snow White: Being nice is a good way to be!

Evil Queen: --Oh, your little smile and your coy manners may bewitch some people…you may have “friends,” but you don’t have what it takes to RULE--!! YOU ARE NOT ME!

Snow White: And I am thankful every day that I am NOT!!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 10

Evil Queen: (She laughs knowingly in Snow White’s face.) Then you will never be Queen.

(Snow White breaks down in sobs, and begins to run from the room, Stage L)

Evil Queen: Snow White…?

(Snow White stops and turns. The Evil Queen does not even look at her.)

Evil Queen: Happy birthday.

(Snow White runs off.)

Evil Queen: (Pause. To the audience) What? You think me evil? Well, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

(With a flourish of her gown, the Evil Queen climbs the stairs to the magic mirror.)

Scene 2C

(Nursemaid quickly picks up discarded presents, and lingers up stage, eavesdropping.)

Evil Queen: Looking glass, upon the wall, who is the fairest of us all?

Mirror: Queen, you are full fair, tis true, but Snow White fairer is than you.

Evil Queen: Aughh!!! Oh no!-- It’s finally happened-! I should never have allowed her to reach her 18th birthday!

Page! Send in the royal Huntress! (to herself) I’m slipping—I have pardoned too many people lately! (gathering herself)—but I can correct this! Huntress--!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 11 (Huntress hurries in and kneels at the bottom of the stairs. The Pages return to their positions.)

Huntress: Yes, my Queen?

Evil Queen: Take Snow White and dispose of her!

Huntress: You mean…KILL her??

Evil Queen: (gasp) Tsk, tsk, tsk, that is so politically incorrect!! I am simply elim-in-a-ting her job description--! Get rid of her!

Huntress: But, Your Majesty—are you sure—I—

Evil Queen: Term-in-ate her!

Huntress: If this is your wish—

Evil Queen: It is!

Huntress: Then I have no choice but to obey. When shall—

Evil Queen: Today! Now!

Huntress: (with a slight hesitation; grim) Yes, my Queen, it shall be done.

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 12

Evil Queen: Now, get out! Before I eliminate your job description as well!!!

(The Nursemaid sneaks quickly from the room.)

Evil Page: (Snickering as he watches the Huntress out, he rubs his hands together and cackles, much the way the Queen does.)

Evil Queen: What? What is that??

Evil Page: I’m laughing in an evil manner, your Majesty!—I practiced!

Evil Queen: Well, stop it!—I’m the only one allowed to cackle maniacally!!!

Evil Page: (humbled) Yes, Your Majesty!

(But as she sweeps out, he practices another evil cackle.)

(Blackout.)

Scene 3A

( Spot on Stage L apron.)

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 13 (Snow White sits on the preshow bench that was her Mother’s; she works at the same embroidery stand. The Nursemaid enters from her left, behind her, then moves to kneel at her side.)

Nursemaid: Snow White, I have been your nursemaid, lo, these many years, and knew your mother and father very well…so you must believe me now, when I say to you that the Queen, your step-mother, means you harm!

Snow White: Oh, surely not; she is simply in bad temper…again!

Nursemaid: She is evil, and cruel, and very jealous of the lovely young woman you have become--!

Snow White: I know she seems stern and uncaring…and vain and arrogant…and viciously self- centered…but I cannot believe that she is evil--

Nursemaid: You are too kind, Snow White! Please take care!—If you are lured away from the castle, even by a friend, be on your guard—

Snow White: Whatever for? No one means me harm!

Nursemaid: --but if I had heard something—

Snow White: (stands and pulling the Nursemaid up, embraces her) Please don’t distress yourself. I am 18 now, and must learn to take care of myself.

Nursemaid: Yes, do take care!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 14

(Suddenly, the Huntress enters from the stage left bottom door; she climbs the stairs in a brusque yet hesitant manner; she kneels, but her hand is on her dagger.)

Huntress: Snow White. I am off to hunt in the forest; do you wish to join me? (She stands and gestures. Snow White jumps up.)

Snow White: Oh, yes!

Blackout.

Scene 4A

The Forest. It is shadowy and grim, ominous.

(Gradually, the audience sees wild animals skulking through the trees, going about their business, traveling from wing to wing, occasionally sniffing the air. A group of Poachers, with bows and arrows, track the Beasts.)

(Beasts/Animals: Jaanai, Sierra, Piya, Rupi, Monica M, Shawnacy, Blake, Michelle V, Victoria V)

(Snow White fairly skips down the aisle, preceding the Huntress, who is troubled.)

Poacher Group 1, David and Margaid: It’s the Huntress!

Poacher Group 2, Jessica and Rayssa: --And the Princess!

Poacher Group 3, Elijah and Phoenix: Hide!! Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 15

Snow White: Thank you for walking in the woods with me, Huntress—

Huntress: (grim) Yes, Princess.

Snow White: I never venture into the forest alone—I know that it’s silly, but I always imagine a Poacher, or a vicious beast behind every tree-!

(Poachers and vicious beasts are briefly revealed behind every tree.)

Snow White: --but with you I feel safe—

(The Huntress, who had positioned herself behind Snow White, and drawn her dagger, has a crisis of conscience, and replaces it.)

Huntress: Snow White—

Snow White: Yes?

Huntress: You have always treated me kindly—asked after my family—spoken to me with respect—

Snow White: Of course! That is what you, or anyone, deserve.

Huntress: No, I do not deserve it!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 16

Snow White: Is something wrong?

Huntress: Yes, Princess, very wrong—!!

Snow White: (now thinking of the Nursemaid’s warning) May I ask you something?...Do you think that my step-mother, the Queen, is evil…?

Huntress: It is not worth my life to answer, Princess…

Snow White: (concerned) …do you think she means me harm?

Huntress: I do not think it, I know it!

(The Huntress raises the dagger to Snow White’s chin. She gasps, but stands her ground. The Huntress cuts off a lock of her hair, and puts it in a coin purse.)

Huntress: The Queen sent me to end your life! Only someone evil could wish that on someone so good! I will show her this lock of hair as proof that you are no more. You must run far away, Snow White--!

Snow White: What??

Huntress: You must flee into the forest, as far from the castle as you can! Save your life! Go!!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 17 (She hurries from the stage; Snow White starts to follow, but is paralyzed by fear.)

Snow White: No, wait! Don’t leave me--!

(Snow White looks around her with terror. The Poachers look out from the trees. The beasts begin to come out of the woods to circle her, growling and snarling. They lunge, threateningly, cutting off any avenue of escape. Just when it seems that they would pounce on her, they begin quieting, and eventually step backward, disappearing into the forest. Snow White sinks to the ground, trembling with relief.)

Snow White: I must not stay here! I must hide!! (She scrambles to her feet and whirls in a circle) But where am I to go?? Which way—wait-! I think I see a small cottage behind those trees--!! Hello? Help me--!

Semi-blackout.

Scene 4B

Snow White freezes, as the interior cottage set is established.

(The Beasts, followed by the Poachers, have retreated from the stage, into the audience, and continue up the aisles, covering the scene change.)

(Lights up, as Snow White “enters” the cottage.)

Snow White: Hello? Is anyone here? No one’s home…why, it looks like children live here--! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven little beds, seven little stools…seven little plates…seven little forks…seven little mugs…why would seven little children live out here in the middle of the forest??...unless… this house belongs to seven little people--!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 18 It is so rude to make myself at home, but it is dark and cold…and I am so hungry and thirsty...perhaps if I took just a little from each, I would not cause too much trouble…I will apologize as soon as they return!

(Snow White samples a little from each place setting, then stifling a yawn, turns to the little beds.)

Snow White: I will only rest a moment...(she tries each bed in turn, to find the most comfortable; it is the last one in the row. She stretches and yawns, and falls immediately to sleep.)

(Lights dim inside the house)

Scene 5

(The enter down the aisle. They have been mining in the earth all day; they carry pickaxes and shovels, and sacks of ore over their shoulders. They compete and banter with each other.)

Dwarf 1, Solange: (holding up a fist-sized rock) Now, that’s a find!!

Dwarf 2, Flynn: (fishing a rock out of his sack) Nah--! This is a find-!!

Dwarf 3, Victoria GB: This little rock of mine has more gold in it, than both of yours put together!

Dwarf 4, Riana: Well, I found the most ore yesterday! –and the day before--!

Dwarf 5, Gracie: No, I did!! I find more gold than anyone!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 19 Dwarf 6, Cooper: But who was it that found the opals and the sapphires??

Dwarf 7, Eden: Bah, gems! It’s gold we’re really after!—That we can sell for sure!!

(They have reached the cottage. The first stops short, leaving the others to bump up and stack behind her.)

Dwarf 1, Solange: Shhh! Someone’s in here! I can hear breathing!

Dwarf 2, Flynn: I can’t see anything! Pass me a candle-!

(There is a general clatter as they drop their tools and sacks; gradually, they all hold lit candles, and fan into the room.)

Dwarf 3, Victoria GB: Look! Someone has been sitting on my little stool—I can tell!

All others: Mine too-!

Dwarf 4, Riana: Someone has been eating from my little bread--!

All others: Mine too--!

Dwarf 5, Gracie: Someone has been using my little fork--!

All others: Mine, too--!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 20 Dwarf 6, Cooper: Someone has been drinking from my little mug--!

All others: Mine, too--!

Dwarf 7, Eden: (a big gasp) Someone has been sleeping in my little bed—

All others: Mine, too—!

Dwarf 7, Eden: But, in mine, she’s still there!!

Say! I’ve heard about this girl!!—We’ve got you now, Goldilocks--!!! No, this one has very black hair…white skin, and red lips…

(The dwarfs gather around the last bed; their candlelight reveals Snow White.)

All Dwarfs: Ooooooo--!

(Snow White awakens with a start)

Snow White: OH-!

Dwarfs: AUGHHHHHH!!!!!

(The dwarfs tumble over themselves to get to their tools for protection. They huddle in a quivering mass.)

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 21 Snow White: Oh, I’m so sorry! I’ve entered your house without permission—this is such a safe, welcoming cottage—and I was so frightened—Please forgive me!

Dwarf 1, Solange: Who are you??

Dwarf 2, Flynn: Where did you come from?

Snow White: I beg your pardon! (She curtsies.) I am Snow White. How do you do!

(They are stunned, do a double take.)

Dwarf 3, Victoria GB: Thee Snow White??

Dwarf 4, Riana: Our Princess?

Snow White: (laughing) The very same!

(Hastily, they gasp, remove their hats, spruce up, and kneel. Smiling, she indicates they should rise.)

Dwarf 3, Victoria GB: But, Princess, what are you doing out here in the woods?

Dwarf 4, Riana: It’s not safe for you!

Snow White: At the moment, it’s safer for me than my own castle! I’m afraid that my step- mother, the Queen, wishes to do away with me— Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 22

(They all gasp.)

Dwarf 5, Gracie: Then, of course, you must stay here!!

Dwarf 6, Cooper: (He raises his pickaxe with false bravado.) We’ll protect you! I’m not afraid of the Evil Queen--!

(Dwarf 7, very serious, taps Dwarf 6, to come forward.)

Dwarf 6, Cooper: Aughhhh--!!

Dwarf 7, Eden: This is very serious! You may stay here as long as you like, Princess…but the Evil Queen is a sorceress, so she will soon know you are here! And we are gone most of the day. You must beware! Do not let anyone in the house!!

Snow White: (tearing up) Oh, you are so kind to me! I will be ever so careful! Now, to thank you, let me make you a proper dinner—

All Dwarfs: Hur-ray!!!

Blackout.

Scene 6

The Stage L split black lowers, hiding the cottage. Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 23 The Evil Queen’s throne room.

(Pages and Guards flank the platform.)

Guards: All hail the Queen!

(The Evil Queen enters from Stage R, swinging the coin purse that contains the lock of Snow White’s hair; she is energetic and self-confident.)

Evil Queen: “…I feel pretty, oh so pretty, I feel pretty, and witty, and bright!—and I pity any Queen who isn’t me tonight…!”

(She sweeps up the stairway to the magic mirror.)

Evil Queen: “…see the pretty Queen in the mirror there—“ Ahh…Looking glass upon the wall, who is fairest of us all?

Magic Mirror: Queen, thou art of beauty rare, but to Snow White you can’t compare. She lives, you see, within the wood, with seven miners, small and good.

Guards and Pages: Oh-oh.

Evil Queen: (hisses and throws down the coin purse) I’ve been betrayed!! (to her lackeys ) Find the soon-to-be-deceased Huntress, and bring her to me!!! (They scramble off.)

I should have known! I must do this deed myself! (contemplates as she comes down to the platform) After all, I have MAGIC, and I know how to use it!

(She waves her hands over the cauldron to “wake it up.”) First, I must cast a spell to disguise myself! Because my beauty is so famous, anyone I might meet would recognize me! (Flips

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 24 viciously through her book of magic.) So—I will become the opposite--! Yes!—A lowly peasant woman—old and ugly! (She begins adding herbs and powders to the cauldron; it smokes.)

Then, I will go into the forest, and take care of Snow White—FOREVER!!

(She conjures over the pot. She cackles, and fills a goblet.)

Beware, Snow White! I AM COMING FOR YOU!!!

(Thunder and strobe effect.)

(A new argument: “I’m sure it will be my favorite—“ “No—mine--!” etc.)

(They exit.)

Scene 7C

The Cottage, and its foreground.

(Snow White sits upon a stool, sewing a button on a Dwarf’s shirt.)

(The Evil Queen, now disguised as a peasant woman, wears a hooded cape, and carries an old basket, filled with ribbons and trims. She enters from Stage R, and approaches the “door” of the cottage.)

Evil Queen: (with an old lady voice) Fine wares to sell--! Laces of all colors! Ribbons-!

Snow White: (excited; fingering the ribbon that laces up the back of her gown) Oh! That is just what I need—a new ribbon to lace up this dress! (She rushes to the doorway, but stops abruptly.) Oh, but I mustn’t! The dwarfs told me not to open the door--! (she looking out a window.) Why, it’s only an old woman! She couldn’t hurt me—

Evil Queen: Open up, dearie--! Look at these fine ribbons--!

Snow White: Good day to you, granny! How beautiful…this is my favorite color!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 28 Evil Queen: Then you shall have it! Turn around and I will replace this old one in a jiffy, and lace you up properly!

(Snow White happily turns her back. The Queen whips the old ribbon out of Snow White’s dress, and taking the new one, winds it roughly into place.)

Snow White: Oh!—you are very strong, for an elderly woman!

Evil Queen: You have no idea--!

Snow White: Oof! That’s too tight!

Evil Queen: No, no, no—it’s all the style—your waist must be as tee-niney as possible!

(The Queen pulls tighter, and tighter, cutting off Snow White’s breathing. She even braces her foot on Snow White’s rear.)

Snow White: I can’t breathe--! (gasp)

Evil Queen: What’s that, dearie?

Snow White: (gasp) I said…I can’t breathe!

Evil Queen: Then it’s just about right! (She gives one more yank, and Snow White swoons to the floor.) There!—That’s perfect!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 29 (Laughing, the Evil Queen exits, R, dropping the used ribbon.)

Scene 7D

(The Dwarfs return down the aisle; they are a bit disheveled and sooty.)

Dwarf 1, Solange: Too bad about the cave-in--!

Dwarf 2, Flynn: And just when I was winning--!

Dwarf 3, Victoria GB: Even without the cave-in, I’d found more gold than you—

Dwarf 4, Riana: I don’t mind leaving early—I’m hungry!

Dwarf 5, Gracie: Snow White won’t expect us back yet—

Dwarf 6, Cooper: We might frighten her---

Dwarf 7, Eden: What’s this? A piece of ribbon? It’s from Snow White’s dress! Something has happened--!

Dwarfs: SNOW WHITE--!

(They rush into the cottage and see Snow White “dead” on the floor. They sit her up, pat her cheeks, give her a little shake.)

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 30

Dwarf 7, Eden: The ribbon! Look! A new ribbon in her dress, pulled too tight!

(She loosens the ribbon, and Snow White takes in a big whoosh of air.)

Snow White: What happened? Where is the old woman…?

Dwarf 7, Eden: That was no old woman—that was the Evil Queen! You’ve been tricked, Snow White! Do not let anyone in again--!

(The Dwarfs help her up and tend to her kindly.)

(Voice Overs, into Black out.)

(VOICE-OVER)

Magic Mirror: Snow White breathes, to live anew, and thus is still more fair than you! Saved in time, by miners small, she is the fairest one of all!

(VOICE-OVER)

Evil Queen: Aughhhh!!!

(Split-black R raise, as L lowers.)

Scene 8A

The throne room Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 31 (The Evil Queen, still disguised as an old woman, leans deeply and horribly over her cauldron, mixing a roiling concoction A basket of fruit, and more bottles of herbs are on the stand.)

Evil Queen: This time I will leave nothing to chance—POISON is what I need!!—A deadly poison-!

The trick will be in how to use it!...I could…put it on a piece of jewelry…no!—She doesn’t wear any…A hair comb!—one scratch on her scalp, and the poison will be introduced…but if those interring dwarfs find her in time and snatch it out, she will revive again! And, because of them, she will be on her guard now, and too careful!

No, the poison must be on something completely innocent…something…sweet… (she eye the bowl of fruit, and reaches)…like…a…banana!—No—a…pear!—No—an --!!

An apple…but still, she may not eat it…unless I do first!...So…poison on one side, but not on the other…!

This MUST work!—I can’t bear to look like this for much longer! (She throws a fur skin over her shoulders to change her look, and exits.)

Scene 8B

Guard Joseph: (confidentially) It’s true. She is no longer here.

Guard Juliet: (in a moment of weakness) We are worried about her too!

Page(s): She is no longer here. You will not see her again. Move along!

(Guards snap back to attention, not wanting the Evil Page to report them. The Page(s) turn and exit, as Villagers gasp and whisper.)

Villager Vienna: Has something bad happened to Snow White?

Nursemaid: It’s my fault! I should have prevented her from going into the forest with the huntress!!

Villager Marianne: No one has seen the huntress either--!!!

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 33 Villager Evelyn: What has happened to them??

(She cries; the Villagers comfort her.)

Scene 9

(Split black R falls, L rises.)

The cottage

(Snow White and the Dwarfs are finishing breakfast, and she assists them as they get ready to leave for the day. As they exit the cottage, the Dwarfs each will shake a warning finger at, or give a hug to, Snow White, and as they continue up the aisle, they are too serious to jostle or banter.)

(The old beggar woman crosses to the “door” of the cottage.)

Evil Queen: Apples! Help a poor old woman! Apples for sale--! Hello?

Snow White: I’m sorry, I cannot see anyone! Go away, please!

Evil Queen: Of course, my dear! I know how dangerous the forest is, too! But I am so old and weary, I must rest! I’ll just sit out here on the cold, wet ground for a bit, and eat one of my own apples…

Script - Snow_White_And_The_Evil_Queen--Orientation_Draft P a g e | 34 Snow White: Oh, dear…I know I shouldn’t do this, but…please, come inside for just a moment to rest and warm yourself.

Evil Queen: You are too kind—(aside) As always--! Please, you must accept one of my apples as my thanks—

Snow White: No, no, I cannot take anything from anyone…

Evil Queen: What a shame!—It is so delicious! (she takes a bite) –half an apple?—Just one little tiny bite?

Snow White: Well, if you’re eating it yourself, I guess it’s alright…

(But just one bite, and before she can even swallow it, Snow White is on the floor!)

Evil Queen: Ha! At last!! Snow White! With skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony…this time, the Dwarfs will not be able to bring you to life again! (She laughs in her real voice.)

Prince: You are near me!
