For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways. 73 The content of this verse suggests the inability of mankind to comprehend the knowledge and thoughts of God, as well as the 73 Isaiah 55: 8- 9. The context of the verse is that Isaiah is conveying the message to the people of Israel that the ability to return to God (Teshuvah) is available to them, since the “traits” of God are conducive to this. The extent of this dissimilarity is clarified in the second statement, i.e. that it is not merely a distance in relation, but rather it is as if they are of a different category altogether, like the difference that exists between heaven and earth 74 . What does the prophet mean when he describes God as having thoughts and ways; how is it even possible to describe God as having thoughts and ways? Noahidism Or B'nai Noah—Sons of Noah—Refers To, Arguably, a Family
Noahidism or B’nai Noah—sons of Noah—refers to, arguably, a family of watered–down versions of Orthodox Judaism. A majority of Orthodox Jews, and most members of the broad spectrum of Jewish movements overall, do not proselytize or, borrowing Christian terminology, “evangelize” or “witness.” In the U.S., an even larger number of Jews, as with this writer’s own family of orientation or origin, never affiliated with any Jewish movement. Noahidism may have given some groups of Orthodox Jews a method, arguably an excuse, to bypass the custom of nonconversion. Those Orthodox Jews are, in any event, simply breaking with convention, not with a scriptural ordinance. Although Noahidism is based ,MP3], Tạləmūḏ]תַּלְמּוד ,upon the Talmud (Hebrew “instruction”), not the Bible, the text itself does not explicitly call for a Noahidism per se. Numerous commandments supposedly mandated for the sons of Noah or heathen are considered within the context of a rabbinical conversation. Two only partially overlapping enumerations of seven “precepts” are provided. Furthermore, additional precepts, not incorporated into either list, are mentioned. The frequently referenced “seven laws of the sons of Noah” are, therefore, misleading and, indeed, arithmetically incorrect. By my count, precisely a dozen are specified. Although I, honestly, fail to understand why individuals would self–identify with a faith which labels them as “heathen,” that is their business, not mine. The translations will follow a series of quotations pertinent to this monotheistic and ,MP3], tạləmūḏiy]תַּלְמּודִ י ,talmudic (Hebrew “instructive”) new religious movement (NRM). Rabbi Bernie Fox Prefae לֵ ֣יל שִׁ מֻּרִ ֥ ים הוּא֙ לַֽיקֹוָ֔ק לְ הוֹצִ יאָ ֖ם מֵאֶ ֣רֶ ץ מִצְרָ ֑יִם הֽ וּא־ הַלַּ֤יְלָה הַזֶּה֙ לַֽיקֹוָ֔ק שִׁ מֻּרִ ֛ ים לְכָל־בְּנֵ ֥י יִשְׂ רָאֵ ֖ל לְדֹרֹתָֽם: (ספר שמות י ב : מ ב ) It is a night for which Hashem awaited to take them forth from the Land of Egypt. This night is for which the Children of Israel await for all their generation. (Sefer Shemot 12:42) Why Is this night different? This question has an unexpected meaning this year. Many of us are leading or making a Seder for the first time. Many are spending their first Pesach separated from children and family. Some of the joy of the Seder night will be sadly absent. Hashem waited through the generations for the moment of our redemption from Egypt. Each year we gather to recall the night of our redemption. We recall the events of the night as if we again experience its drama and splendor. Whether we celebrate the night surrounded by our loved ones or alone, the innate grandeur of this special night shines forth and it illuminates our homes with joy and hope. This year we are separated from one another by material space, but we are uniquely joined together in our fervent prayers to Hashem. May He redeem us from our current affliction as He redeemed our ancestors from Egypt. May Hashem, Who has been the source of our people’s salvation in every generation, protect, keep us safe, and grant us salvation. Scripture refers to them as Azazel and se’irim; later writings refer to them as sheidim, ruchot and mazikim. All these are different varieties (or different names) of demons. Belief in demons (and the associated belief in witches, magic and occult phenomena) was widespread in the ancient world, and the terror that it caused is unimaginable to us.1 But in the civilized world today there is virtually nobody who still believes in them. The transition from a global approach of belief to one of disbelief began with Aristotle, gained a little more traction in the early medieval period, and finally concretized in the eighteenth century. -

Stern, Jewish New Testament Publications, Inc., unless otherwise noted) Let’s begin with the opening blessing for the Torah: “Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-‘Olam, asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim, v’natan lanu eht Torah-to. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.” (Blessed are you, O’ LORD, our God, King of the Universe, you have selected us from among all the peoples, and have given us your Torah. Blessed are you, LORD, giver of the Torah. Ameyn.) We have finally come to the last portion of Vayikra, known as Parashat B’chukkotai (say “b-choo-koh-tie”; the “ch” is as the “ch” in Bach). The root word from which our Torah portion’s title is taken is “choke” qx, and it means “statute, ordinance, limit, something prescribed.1” This should not be confused with its counterpart “Torah” which is also sometimes translated along these same lines. I understand the word choke to convey something a bit more “wooden” (edict) when compared to Torah (teaching). Because this commentary’s teachings are so pertinent to world Jewry, both past and present, I shall be making many more rabbinic quotes than I normally do. I will ask my non-Jewish audience to bear with me as I reach out to my fellow “Y’hudim” (Jews) through the instructions of the Chazal (Sages of Blessed Memory). -

Rabbi Moshe Becker Chovot Halevavot – or More? The Philosophy of R' Bachya By Rabbi Moshe Becker The 11 th century heralded a new era in the realm of Jewish thought. Over the course of the 10 th century the nexus of Jewish intellectual activity moved from Babylonia, where it had been for several centuries, to Europe; primarily Muslim Spain. The new reality provided new opportunities for Jewish scholarship; interaction with Islam and Christianity created a niche for literary works explaining, and often justifying, the Jewish religion. The corpus of literature available to us from the medieval “Rishonim” includes many such works and their significance is no smaller than those of the legal and exegetical genre. The focus of this essay is the work of R’ Bachya Ben Yosef Ibn Paquda, author of Torat Chovot Halevavot, in the original Arabic Kitab al-Hidaya ila Faraid al-Qulub , otherwise known as ( The Guide to) The Duties of the Heart. Very little biographical information is available about the book or its author. The date of the book’s appearance has long been debated; however a consensus of sorts has put the year at approximately 31 Chovot Halevavot – or more? The philosophy of R' Bachya 1080 6. Nothing is known to us about the author, other than that he was a Dayan (Judge) 7, and likely lived in Saragossa 8. We are also aware of several piyyutim which are ascribed to R’ Bachya, some published and others in remaining in manuscript. Although Chovot Halevavot is an extremely popular book, its uniqueness is best appreciated in its historical context.
