Most notable, of course, was Moses Maimonides, the foremost legist and theologian of the age. Not only did he cultivate Greco-Arabic philosophy and science, but he also taught the radical proposition that knowledge of some of its branches was essential for a true understanding of revealed scripture and for worship of God in its purest form. As an object of modern scholarship, medieval philosophy has not suffered from a lack of attention. Since the advent of Wissenschaft des Judentums more than a century and half ago, studies have proliferated, whether on specific topics (e.g., theories of creation), leading figures (e.g., Saadiah Gaon, Judah Halevi, Maimonides), or the historical, religious, and intellectual settings in which Jewish engagements with philosophy occurred—first in -

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways. 73 The content of this verse suggests the inability of mankind to comprehend the knowledge and thoughts of God, as well as the 73 Isaiah 55: 8- 9. The context of the verse is that Isaiah is conveying the message to the people of Israel that the ability to return to God (Teshuvah) is available to them, since the “traits” of God are conducive to this. The extent of this dissimilarity is clarified in the second statement, i.e. that it is not merely a distance in relation, but rather it is as if they are of a different category altogether, like the difference that exists between heaven and earth 74 . What then is the relationship between mankind and God? What does the prophet mean when he describes God as having thoughts and ways; how is it even possible to describe God as having thoughts and ways? These perplexing implications are further compounded when one is introduced to the Magnum Opus of Maimonides 75 , the Mishneh Torah . -
Noahidism Or B'nai Noah—Sons of Noah—Refers To, Arguably, a Family
Noahidism or B’nai Noah—sons of Noah—refers to, arguably, a family of watered–down versions of Orthodox Judaism. A majority of Orthodox Jews, and most members of the broad spectrum of Jewish movements overall, do not proselytize or, borrowing Christian terminology, “evangelize” or “witness.” In the U.S., an even larger number of Jews, as with this writer’s own family of orientation or origin, never affiliated with any Jewish movement. Noahidism may have given some groups of Orthodox Jews a method, arguably an excuse, to bypass the custom of nonconversion. Those Orthodox Jews are, in any event, simply breaking with convention, not with a scriptural ordinance. Although Noahidism is based ,MP3], Tạləmūḏ]תַּלְמּוד ,upon the Talmud (Hebrew “instruction”), not the Bible, the text itself does not explicitly call for a Noahidism per se. Numerous commandments supposedly mandated for the sons of Noah or heathen are considered within the context of a rabbinical conversation. Two only partially overlapping enumerations of seven “precepts” are provided. Furthermore, additional precepts, not incorporated into either list, are mentioned. The frequently referenced “seven laws of the sons of Noah” are, therefore, misleading and, indeed, arithmetically incorrect. By my count, precisely a dozen are specified. Although I, honestly, fail to understand why individuals would self–identify with a faith which labels them as “heathen,” that is their business, not mine. The translations will follow a series of quotations pertinent to this monotheistic and ,MP3], tạləmūḏiy]תַּלְמּודִ י ,talmudic (Hebrew “instructive”) new religious movement (NRM). They were hard at work building an elaborate sand castle by the water’s edge, with gates and towers and moats and internal passages. Just when they had nearly finished their project, a big wave came along and knocked it down, reducing it to a heap of wet sand. I expected the children to burst into tears, devastated by what had happened to all their hard work. But they surprised me. Instead, they ran up the shore away from the water, laughing and holding hands, and sat down to build another castle. I realized that they had taught me an important lesson. All the things in our lives, all the complicated structures we spend so much time and energy creating, are built on sand. Only our relationships to other people endure. Sooner or later, the wave will come along and knock down what we have worked so hard to build up. When that happens, only the person who has somebody’s hand to hold will be able to laugh. -

Robinson erhaps as early as the eighth century, in the Islamic East, the traditional Sanskrit tales about the Buddha’s enlightenment—about his recognition of his own mortality and training with an ascetic monk—were translated into Persian and Arabic. The Arabic version, entitled Bilawhar wa-Būdhāsaf, then served as Pthe basis for renderings into Georgian, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and a long list of European vernacular languages.1 These renderings were, more often than not, not straightforward translations but adaptations, often introducing significant modifications into the frame narrative. The Greek version, for example, transformed Bilawhar—an ascetic teacher—into Barlaam, a saintly Christian monk, and his disciple Budasaf or Yudasaf—the Buddha—into Joasaph or Josaphat, a saintly Christian Neophyte.2 The Hebrew version is no less surprising than the Greek, when Bilawhar be- comes not a Jewish sage but a Neoplatonic philosopher, and his 1 For the Arabic and Persian versions, see D. Mephibosheth and the King: A Story of Covenant Chesed II Samuel 9 From the ESV, with slight rephrasing from the Hebrew, bolding for emphasis and [comments in brackets] By Bill Bjoraker, Ph.D. We recall the covenant of friendship between David and Jonathan. At last Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for we have sworn chesed (faithful loyalty and lovingkindness) to each other in the Yahweh’s name. The Lord is the witness of a bond between us and our children forever” (I Sam. 20:42). Mephibosheth was a son of Jonathan, who had been crippled as a boy of five years old, when his nurse dropped him in the flight after the defeat at the Battle of Gliboa (2 Samuel 4:4). Mephibosheth was by this time in his 20s (David had reigned in Hebron 7 years, and now Mephibosheth has a son, Micha). So at the time of this story, David was about in the middle of his 40-year reign. We can see a contrast between the destinies of the House of Saul and the House of David— David came dancing and whirling into Jerusalem; the surviving member of the House of Saul comes limping into Jerusalem, crippled in both legs. The name “Mephibosheth” means “from the mouth of shame” (similar to his uncle’s name, Saui’s son, Ish-bosheth” means “man of shame”). A particularly poignant story, as the king demonstrates his chesed to one who feels so undeserving, and who indeed fears he may have been summoned to the king to face death, in that all the rest of the House of Saul had been eliminated… but where sin abounded, chesed did much more abound… The King lifts Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan, in chesed. -

Were Obligatory Beliefs Revealed on Sinai? Dr. Shira Weiss Adjunct Instructor in Jewish Philosophy, Stern College for Women On Shavuot we commemorate the revelation of the Torah which clearly delineates practical obligations; however, neither the Torah nor the Talmud explicitly lists the obligatory beliefs that must be maintained in order to properly worship God.55 Even the Ten Commandments, the Torah reading on Shavuot, do not comprehensively articulate the tenets in which a Jew must believe. This caused Jews throughout the ages to question whether one's relationship with God was exclusively emotional and experiential, or intellectual as well. R. Norman Lamm, in Faith and Doubt, explicates a distinction made by Martin Buber56 between two types of faith- intellectual and emotional/experiential: The first, that of acknowledgment, is a cognitive type of faith, in which I intellectually accept certain propositions as true- such as the existence and unity of God- whether or not I can offer convincing logical proof for my conviction. This is a "belief that" type of faith. The second type, that of trust, is not "belief- that", but "belief in." Regardless of the thoughts I entertain about God, regardless of my theology and the dogmas I affirm, I believe in Him: I trust and esteem Him. This is the area not of propositions, but of relationship… Now this second category, that of trust and "belief- in," can be expressed as an emotional investment in another and in action, in the willingness to pursue a certain course of conduct at the behest of the one in whom I have faith-trust.57 Since there is no explicit list of dogmas or intellectual beliefs commanded in the Torah, it has been understood that the biblical conception of ‘faith’ (emunah) refers to ‘belief in’, not to ‘belief that’. -
