Page 2 Dim Bulb Aug 2018 Presidents Column High Beemers M/C Club Wow! The month of July was HOT and towards the end PO Box 3127 SMOKY! Fred Barrie Our breakfast ride found our leader Nick taking us up to 775.745.1936 cooler temperatures at the top of Kingsbury grade. [email protected] I led the club ride in the middle of the month and it was Vice President getting warm then. We were up in the mountains in the

Russ Ristine Graeagle area and it was a little cooler, I thought? 775.742.5866 I journeyed back to the Midwest to Kankakee Illinois [email protected] which is just south of Chicago. Nick, Steve, Tracy, Kerry & Peggy, Bill, Fred, Jim & Rosie, John, Sam and Bruce gathered at the Shell station at the intersection of 395 & Red Rock Road. 10am the signal was given for the ride to start. We ventured north on 395 passing through the inspection station. No bugs were found. We were all allowed to pass through. Reaching Hallelujah Junction a left turn was initiated and we started our journey to the west. Passing through Chilcoot it was noted that the country gas sta- tion store has been remodeled. After passing the Beckwourth Airport the turn for Grizzly Road was upcoming. Turning north and slowing up to gather everyone up the journey continued north to cross the Lake Davis dam. The plan was to stop at the JJ Grizzly store for the first break. Pulling in there the group was surveyed and everyone elected to continue riding. We pulled back on the road and continued south into Portola. Just as we reached 70 to make our left turn a semi truck was trying to make a right turn going north on the road that we had just traveled. It was a standoff, the truck was stopped so we had to venture around it and this is where our group got split apart. Crossing the bridge over the river and rail road tracks the first several bikes found a open area to stop and wait for the rest of the group to join up. When Sam, our sweeper appeared at the top of the bridge we resumed our journey. But this put us in a section of town with “482” stop signs which we had to stop at everyone of them to get back onto the road towards the Nakoma resort. We continued on riding west out of Portola leaving the semi truck and stop signs be- hind us. Reaching the turn off for the Nakoma lodge we turned and rode past the new spa and pool building. Continuing up the road, we made a circle in front of the restaurant and rode back down the hill. Turning west we continued on towards Clio. Reaching 89 we turned right and headed north towards Graeagle. Just before reaching Graeagle we stopped at the Graeagle Golf Course where we had lunch. Following lunch we rode up to Gold Lake. Riding down to the lake and circling the boat ramp it was back up to the highway. Several of the members must of had a problem with their motorcycles “loading up” from running so slow. They used the op- portunity to clean out their systems by letting it rip down the hill to Bassett. We all gathered up at Bassett and joined 49 into Sierraville. Several of the riders continued on while the rest of us stopped at the gas station and enjoyed a break and a cold drink. Following the break everyone went their own way back home.

GOLD RUN GS RIDE, JULY 28, 2018 Tracey McCormick and I (Herb Kirby) met as planned at the Maverick Station on Stead Blvd. Fred Barrie had told me he would be there to "See us off." Sure enough, he showed up with his wife. The four of us had a nice chat while waiting for the other riders to arrive. As 9 AM approached, it became clear that Tracey needed to volunteer to be the Sweep. With all re- sponsibilities assigned, we headed north on US 395 for the rest area near Janesville. Although the smoke in the air increased as we headed north, it also obscured the sun and kept the temperature below 80 deg. F all morning. We left the rest area about 10:30, headed towards Susanville and turned west on Richmond Road which took us south of Susanville to Gold Run Road. The pavement came to an end after a few miles, and we began our climb towards Diamond Mountain. The road had been maintained earlier this year, and I found it better than I had seen it in years. The ride to the ridge was in heavy timber. The landscape became bare as we headed down to the south through an area that had been burned in the past. We had a view to the south but it was obscured by smoke. We came upon a doe and two fawns in the road but they were too quick for our cameras. A second doe was in the road about 30 feet after the first three- some. We joined Diamond Mountain Road at the bottom of the mountain and followed Lights Creek south toward Taylorsville. We paused at the mine ruins on the left side of the road which had plaques marking the location of the Engel Mine. Who knew there was copper in these hills? We switched to North Arm Road which curves its way along the north edge of the valley.

Fortunately, the sharpest curves along this road were marked with 15 mph yellow signs. We appreciated a pleasant speedy ride after the 2nd-gear work over the mountain. We arrived at Taylorsville County Park and were surprised to see a rodeo in progress. We ate our lunch in the park and then wandered across the road to find that it was the Taylors- ville Junior Rodeo. We watched a few eight and ten-year olds ride their horse to the vicinity of a tethered small sheep, dismount, throw the sheep to the ground and tie their legs. Truly, a bonus to the GS ride.

The riders in our group discussed the options for returning to Reno: Pavement through Quincy vs. Gravel road twice the length we had already travelled. There being no enthu- siastic desire for the gravel, we headed toward Quincy. On the way, we made a pass through Keddie Resort, noting that it had once had its own train platform used for visitors from the Bay Area. The reason for its fall from favor was not revealed and is left for the reader to research on the Internet. We stopped at the rest area south of Quincy. As this territory was familiar to the Sweep, he graciously agreed to become the Leader. The ride Leader was relegated to the Sweep position. The new Leader, Tracey, was encouraged to stop at Chilcoot by the initial ride Leader, Herb, who generously offered to buy ice cream for all members of this ride. After refreshments, we headed back to Stead for fuel. I noted total mileage for the round trip to and from Stead at 230 miles and right at six hours. Since both Tracey and I live in South Reno, we stuck together to navigate the gauntlet of I-580 on a hot (95 deg.) Saturday afternoon.

Some background for this trip. I am a Rotarian (member of a local Rotary club). The international conference will be in Toronto. I am a member of the Rotary motorcycle fellowship. We will have a booth at the convention to promote membership in our fellow- ship. They need my help. So a ride to Toronto was planned. Got the bike serviced and put on a new rear tire (Shinko 705). GPS loaded with waypoints and routes. New Garmin In Reach all set up. Katie was flying to Toronto to ride with me to Montreal and New York, so I loaded her riding gear (helmet, jacket, pants, rain gear) in the larger pannier. She would carry everything else she needed in the pannier liner. I got the smaller pannier for 1 months travel. I left June 16 and headed to Delta Utah for the night. Next day I went on to Glenwood springs. I zigged over to Moab and took Hwy 128 up the canyon of the Colorado Riv- er. Beautiful! Jessica was driving home from So Cal and met me for dinner in Glenwood Springs. They continued on to Denver and hit horrible thunderstorm. Glad I didn’t go! Next day I side tripped to Aspen and on into Den- ver. Rockies riding! Only 1 night at Jessica’s then off I went. I headed to Sturgis, having never been there. Seems all the big bars are only open 3-5 weeks a year. Many were closed. Next morning I went through some rain early and avoided the scenic route where there was more rain. Through South Dakota and Minnesota over several days. Stopped at Aerostich in Duluth and got a tour of their facility. Amazing technology to cut the material for their suits. Crossed into Canada at Sault Saint Marie and on to Sudbury Ontario. Then a short day into Toronto. I stayed about 20 miles outside of Toronto downtown and took the train in each day. Worked out great. The day Katie flew in (a red eye flight) we did a beer tast- ing tour and dinner. I am also a member of the beer fel- lowship! Lots of fun! The next day we had planned to go to Niagara falls on the bike, but it was raining, so we postponed til the next day. When we left for Niagara early the weather was fine, but hot. We enjoyed Niaga- ra. Took the boat trip up close to the falls and went up in a tower for a birds eye view. Then we had to ride back past Toronto to Kingston where we had an AirBNB for the night. A funky old duplex. Someone suggested taking the toll road past Toronto. Which I started on. I failed to ask when to get off! I got off too early and we hit awful traffic in the high humidity heat. Ugg!

Volume 28 Issue 08 The High Beemers M/C of Northern Nevada BMWMOA Chartered Club #337, BMWRA Charter #75, AMA Charter #3185301 Page 10 Dim Bulb Aug 2018

I had planned a short scenic drive from Kingston to Mon- treal for Katie. We saw some locks built in the 1800s that are still working today. And saw them in opera- tion! Fascinating! Getting into Montreal was more traffic in the high humidity heat. More Ugg! We did a lot of walking and Ubering while in Montreal for 3 nights. Another AirBNB in a condo high rise. We went to a “speakeasy”. Fun! Oh, while in Canada managed to find some good Cuban cigars, which I enjoyed along the way! When we left Montreal, I headed for a small border crossing and continued across some islands in Lake Champlain. Nice ride! Our destination was near Hartford Conn to visit my sister -in-law and nephew for 1 night. Good visit! The next day we left for Suffern NY to visit my sister for 2 nights. She was happy to have me help sort through some family memorabilia in preparation for her moving to California. On July 5 Katie flew home from New Jersey and I left for AMA Vintage Days in Ohio. I spent 3 nights in Ohio. I am not a vin- tage fan, but the experience was cool! Saw some road racing, flat track racing. The swap meet was HUGE!!! Now it was time to head home. 3 days across the Midwest from Ohio to Denver. I made a horrible decision near Chicago to avoid a toll road. I got stuck in worse traffic than Toronto or Montreal. Hot Humid and stop and go. And the interstate I was aiming for was CLOSED! So another mile to exit. Horrible. In the Denver area, Jessica allowed me to stay a night with a long time friend from So Cal when we both worked at HP. He planned a ride the next day, and Jessica took about a nanosecond to say she wanted to go. (see previous story) The ride went up Left Hand Canyon to Neder- land for coffee, only about 30-45 minutes. Jessica wanted more! We parted ways and Jessica and I went down Hwy 6 from Idaho Springs to Golden. She had not been on that road and loved it. When we got back to Jessica’s house, granddaughter Brook- lyn wanted a ride. So off we went for about 2-3 miles around the neighborhood. I left the next day and headed to Park City Utah for the night. Retracing some of what I did on the ride with Jason. Then I-80 all the way into Reno and home on July 13. 7375 miles total. Shinko still has life in it! Long- est ride I have ever been on. Virtually all solo riding. Worked out for me! Bob Gautschi needs some advice : he has volunteered to help drive a lady and all her stuff from Bangor Maine to Dayton Nv. From West of Chicago Ill. I should be OK. From Bangor to Chi- cago I have NO idea. I know BMW riders do long distance just for the fun of it but, I need to get back to Dayton ASAP because there is a motorcycle trip waiting when I do. Other than the fact that I might be out of my mind to do this in a U-Haul and trailer I need advice on how to do the first part of the trip with as little problem as possible. Members, you have any ide- as??? HELP!!! and thanks in advance Bob Gautschi [email protected]

From Doug Laird: This can also be an issue for those doing long mileage days. We may be saved by riding at high speeds and thus having to make stops for gas more frequently. https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/dvt/travel.html

2018 High Beemer Rides ------The following are the planned dates of the rides for the upcoming year. If you would like to be the leader of any of the High Beemer CR or GS rides, let me know via email ([email protected]) or at the January 28th dinner meeting. Breakfast Rides (BR) are on the third Monday of each month, starting at Starbucks on Wedge Parkway. Doug Laird or his backup (Nick) will lead the rides. Destinations are deter- mined by the riders in attendance. Usually back in Reno by 12-12:30pm. These rides are held year around and if the weather is inclement everyone is encouraged to show up in an alternate vehicle. Club Rides (CR) are road rides that occur on third Saturday or Sunday of each month. The ride leader will determine the ride date, gathering point, route, and lunch location. The ride leader shares the details of the ride with everyone via our club forum, email and newslet- ter. On the day of the ride, the leader takes a headcount at the gathering point and then calls ahead to the restaurant to make a reservation for the group. The route is a road ride, usually several hours long, possibly with a break stop on the way to the lunch site. The re- turn trip is often open, allowing riders the option of returning to Reno as a group, or on their own. Off Road Rides (GS) are on the fourth Saturday or Sunday of each month. The GS leader follows the same procedures as a Club Ride, except that the GS ride might include a “brown bag” lunch (rather than a restaurant lunch) due to routing. ------

Group Rider’s Responsibilities: 1 – Arrive prepared (full gas tank) and on time. 2 – Ride in Formation: (Highway – Staggered Formation) Ride Leader should be in left third of lane. Next rider should be in right third of lane, next rider back to the left third of lane and so on. Preferably there should be a two second gap between riders. Riders should ride single file when the road conditions are curvy; there is poor visibility, and poor road surfaces, when entering/ leaving the highway or other situations when an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is required. MSF recommends a minimum of two seconds between riders. NOTE: Avoid side by side formation. If you needed to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so.

3 – If separated from the group, don’t panic. Each rider should know before hand the destination and be provided with directions. 4 – For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants. 5 - If a rider plans to ride on their own and eventually meet up with the group, the ride leader should be advised prior to departure. 6 - If a rider plans to break off from the group they should advise the ride leader at a rally point or meeting location prior to leaving the group. 7 - All riders/passengers must obey state law and wear an approved helmet.

NOTE: No Alcohol should be consumed on a club ride. 8 - It is highly recommended that all riders/passengers wear protective clothing while on club rides. 9 - We represent motorcyclists to motorists so PLEASE drive appropriately. 10 - This is a group ride that riders have chosen to participate in. Riders: please be patient, toler- ant and respectful of others needs; please try to stay together and look out for the well being of other participants. 11 – Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror. If you see a rider falling be- hind, slow down so they may catch up. If all riders in the group use this technique, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up. 12 – Each rider is responsible for the rider behind him. The rider should SAFELY pause at each major turn to ensure the following rider stays on the route. The rider waits until the following rider is able to continue. 13 - Someone from the ride should write a story of the trip for the newsletter editor.

Enjoy the ride!
