The month of July was HOT and towards the end PO Box 3127 SMOKY! Sparks NV 89432 During the first week of July, I had foot surgery so my President July riding was limited. Fred Barrie Our breakfast ride found our leader Nick taking us up to 775.745.1936 cooler temperatures at the top of Kingsbury grade. [email protected] I led the club ride in the middle of the month and it was Vice President getting warm then. We were up in the mountains in the Russ Ristine Graeagle area and it was a little cooler, I thought? 775.742.5866 I journeyed back to the Midwest to Kankakee Illinois [email protected] which is just south of Chicago. Visiting with the family for one week allowed me to experience one of the joys of Treasurer living there. “High Humidity”. Got off the plane back here Ernie Baragar at 10pm and it was still 93°. We ventured north on 395 passing through the inspection station. No bugs were found. We were all allowed to pass through. Reaching Hallelujah Junction a left turn was initiated and we started our journey to the west. Passing through Chilcoot it was noted that the country gas sta- tion store has been remodeled. After passing the Beckwourth Airport the turn for Grizzly Road was upcoming. Turning north and slowing up to gather everyone up the journey continued north to cross the Lake Davis dam. The plan was to stop at the JJ Grizzly store for the first break. Pulling in there the group was surveyed and everyone elected to continue riding. We pulled back on the road and continued south into Portola. Just as we reached 70 to make our left turn a semi truck was trying to make a right turn going north on the road that we had just traveled. It was a standoff, the truck was stopped so we had to venture around it and this is where our group got split apart. Crossing the bridge over the river and rail road tracks the first several bikes found a open area to stop and wait for the rest of the group to join up. When Sam, our sweeper appeared at the top of the bridge we resumed our journey. But this put us in a section of town with “482” stop signs which we had to stop at everyone of them to get back onto the road towards the Nakoma resort. We continued on riding west out of Portola leaving the semi truck and stop signs be- hind us. Reaching the turn off for the Nakoma lodge we turned and rode past the new spa and pool building. Continuing up the road, we made a circle in front of the restaurant and rode back down the hill. Turning west we continued on towards Clio. Reaching 89 we turned right and headed north towards Graeagle. Just before reaching Graeagle we stopped at the Graeagle Golf Course where we had lunch. Following lunch we rode up to Gold Lake. Riding down to the lake and circling the boat ramp it was back up to the highway. Several of the members must of had a problem with their motorcycles “loading up” from running so slow. They used the op- portunity to clean out their systems by letting it rip down the hill to Bassett. We all gathered up at Bassett and joined 49 into Sierraville. Several of the riders continued on while the rest of us stopped at the gas station and enjoyed a break and a cold drink. Following the break everyone went their own way back home. Sure enough, he showed up with his wife. The four of us had a nice chat while waiting for the other riders to arrive. As 9 AM approached, it became clear that Tracey needed to volunteer to be the Sweep. With all re- sponsibilities assigned, we headed north on US 395 for the rest area near Janesville. Although the smoke in the air increased as we headed north, it also obscured the sun and kept the temperature below 80 deg. F all morning. We left the rest area about 10:30, headed towards Susanville and turned west on Richmond Road which took us south of Susanville to Gold Run Road. The pavement came to an end after a few miles, and we began our climb towards Diamond Mountain. The road had been maintained earlier this year, and I found it better than I had seen it in years. The ride to the ridge was in heavy timber. The landscape became bare as we headed down to the south through an area that had been burned in the past. We had a view to the south but it was obscured by smoke. We came upon a doe and two fawns in the road but they were too quick for our cameras. A second doe was in the road about 30 feet after the first three- some. We joined Diamond Mountain Road at the bottom of the mountain and followed Lights Creek south toward Taylorsville. We paused at the mine ruins on the left side of the road which had plaques marking the location of the Engel Mine. Who knew there was copper in these hills? We switched to North Arm Road which curves its way along the north edge of the valley. We appreciated a pleasant speedy ride after the 2nd-gear work over the mountain. We arrived at Taylorsville County Park and were surprised to see a rodeo in progress. We ate our lunch in the park and then wandered across the road to find that it was the Taylors- ville Junior Rodeo. We watched a few eight and ten-year olds ride their horse to the vicinity of a tethered small sheep, dismount, throw the sheep to the ground and tie their legs. Truly, a bonus to the GS ride. The riders in our group discussed the options for returning to Reno: Pavement through Quincy vs. Gravel road twice the length we had already travelled. There being no enthu- siastic desire for the gravel, we headed toward Quincy. On the way, we made a pass through Keddie Resort, noting that it had once had its own train platform used for visitors from the Bay Area. The reason for its fall from favor was not revealed and is left for the reader to research on the Internet.
