Page 2 Dim Bulb Oct 2018 President’s Column High Beemers M/C Club September brought a moderation in the temperatures and allowed for PO Box 3127 some very enjoyable riding days. September also found many club Sparks NV 89432 members returning from extended trips and others leaving on across the boarder trips. I am hopeful that these trips can be shared with the President members via the newsletter or a “show & tell” event. Fred Barrie The September Breakfast and Club rides each had a great turn out of 775.745.1936 riders. Both rides were taken under great weather conditions. A smoke respirator really wasn’t needed for these rides. Nick had to change lo- [email protected] cations for breakfast at the last minute due to the large turnout. But as Vice President always Nick had an Ace up his sleeve. The Club Ride also had great Russ Ristine weather (maybe a little windy). Riding through Sierra Valley and into 775.742.5866 the mountains was cool and the air was filled with the aroma of cut hay and sage. After passing Baxter, Gold Lake and Graeagle it was on to [email protected] Portola. There lunch was held at the Log Cabin. For now the Log Cabin Treasurer is open and it was ok, but it has been open and shut more times than Ernie Baragar the back door on the barn. If a long term commitment is not found, changes will need to be Larie Trippet made as to how we communicate our Club news and events.

775.690.4936 Another area that I could use the club members help is making a deci- sion on where our January 27th annual dinner will be held. La Posada Www.highbeemers.org Real has been the location the last serval years. For those of you that Newsletter Editor have been there the food and service has been very acceptable, but Jim Morrow most important the COST ($16-$18 per person) has been reasonable.

775.501.0778 The point of contention is the the room’s layout. It is not conducive for members to mingle during the evening. If you have a location that I [email protected] can investigate let me know ASAP. The September Breakfast Ride by Fred Barrie

Leader: Nick Other Riders included: Larie, Dave, Ernie, Richard, John Z, Bernie, Russ, John F, Jerry and Fred The group started to gather at Starbucks on Wedge Parkway. With about five people there Nick was planning on going to Fire Sign on the west shore of Lake Tahoe. But it soon became obvious as more and more riders showed up that we would need a larger place to eat. Nick decided that we would go to Fox and Hound on the top of Kingsbury grade. The route was down 395 around Carson City and then onto Jack’s Valley Road into Genoa. After passing through Genoa, we turned and rode up Kingsbury Grade. We passed thru one construction site but were stopped at the second one. Reaching the top of Kingsbury grade we made a left turn and proceeded down the road into the Fox and Hound parking lot. Inside the restaurant everyone entered into conversations while our food was being prepared. As we finished eating the talk centered around how would we return to Reno. It was decided to ride along the east side of Lake Tahoe and down Mt. Rose Highway. Dave was going the other way to find the Walker River to “wet” a few hooks. The view of the Lake Tahoe was outstanding and there was only one construction site near Sand Harbor which delayed us for a short time . Navigating the “twisties” coming down from Mt. Rose found riders spreading out as we neared the valley. The sky was blue, a light breeze and cool temperature made a great combination for a ride. Fred

Nick, Larie, Jim, John, Aaron, Steve & Marci, and myself met at the Red Rock Shell Sta- tion. We were joined by Dave who will be joining the High Beemers and guest riders Bob, George and Donnie from the Sunday Breakfast Group. Total of 11 bikes and 12 riders. Saturday morning greeted us with a fall chill and a steady breeze to let us know that the fall season is right around the corner. I even noticed that one rider had his electric vest on. The group moved out and headed north towards Hallelujah Junction. The first obstacle we ran into was the bug station. After careful inspection no riders were found to be carrying any bugs. Turning west on 70 we ventured out to Vinton. Riding South out of Vinton the dark rain clouds were gathering ahead of us. We turned off of 49 and travel through the middle of Sierra Valley coming back into Sierraville. We mostly missed the rain clouds receiving only a few sprinkles. The grass in the valley had turn a golden brown color and the final cutting of hay from the crop circles was waiting to be bailed. Later I learned that during our journey through Sierra Valley, Dave counted 65 hawks during that portion of the ride. I agree, I no- ticed quite a few hawks but I was not counting. Passing through Sierraville it was on to Sattley. Leaving the open spaces of Sierra Valley it was into the trees and “twisties” on our way to Bassett for a rest stop. During this portion of the ride , we discovered that it was possible to get sprinkled on when you were looking up at a blue sky. The ride was slowed a little bit by the fact that in the shaded areas some of the corners were still wet from a previous shower. After 13 miles through the trees and turns, we gathered back up at Bassett. So, after 64 miles we only lost one rider. Leaving Bassett, we continued up Gold Lake Road enjoying the beauty of the Sierra Buttes and other mountain peaks. The temperature dropped down and was in the low 50s as we crossed the crest and headed back down towards Graeagle. Fall colors were becoming prominent in the scenery especially all the groundcover. When we came into Graeagle, we discovered that our missing rider had taken 89 from Sattley to Graeagle. He was trying to meet up with a friend in Graeagle. With all our group back together we continued from Graeagle to Portola. The fall colors were again very impressive especially in the open meadows. Arriving in Portola we stopped at the Log Cabin for lunch. One rider continued on so the ta- ble was set for 11. Many conversations were held only stopping long enough to eat our meals. Leaving the Log Cabin, some riders continued on towards Reno. 5 of us decided to venture north out of Portola to cross over Lake Davis dam. Crossing the dam it was a downhill ride past Grizzly golf course to 49. Heading east towards Hallelujah Junction it was very noticeable that the wind had picked up. After passing Hallelujah Junction it was a strong crosswind all the way back home. The last Club Ride of the season was an enjoyable one.

Friday morning, September 21, 2018, Mike Wallace lead four other riders on a GS adventure to the Nevada and Oregon outback with a brief journey to the far reaches of northeastern Califor- nia. The group was composed of Larie Tippet, Tracey McCormick, Herb Kirby, and Bob Au- denried. They left the Chevron station at La Posada and proceeded to the western shore of Pyr- amid Lake and north across the Smoke Creek Desert to Gerlach for refueling. We headed to- ward the western edge of the Black Rock Desert and took a short detour onto the playa in search of a 747 carcass remaining from Burning Man. After wandering a bit, we were met by two Black Rock Rangers whose mission was cleanup. After exchanging pleasantries we decided to continue our journey north. We took a break at the Lund Petrified Forest and examined the only piece of petrified wood in sight that was enclosed in a chain link cage. We continued on our ride to Vya and turned west toward Cedarville. We were strung out along the road separated from each other by a quarter mile or so to reduce consumption of dust. We took a detour from the main road to visit the Boulder Reservoir which had several campsites. While resting there, a vanguard of a group rid- ing the Trans America Trail (you can google it) stopped at the reservoir. They were on their 23rd day and had only four to go. There were ten bikers in all in their group that included a support truck and trailer to carry their supplies and meet them at the end of each day. We returned to the main road and finished the day's ride at the gas station in Cedarville, CA. After checking in to the Sunrise Motel we had a refreshing beverage and made plans for an ear- ly dinner to beat the Trans America group to the restaurant. Following a suitable adjustment pe- riod we travelled together to the Country Hearth and discovered this was the night they serve prime rib. The prime rib and fixin's exceeded expectations for taste and size. The day finished with cigars and solving world problems outside our motel. We met Saturday morning at the same restaurant and following breakfast headed due north to Fort Bidwell and the Oregon border. After traveling through some scenic canyons we started to see bucolic cattle ranches and lakes. Manure dotted the highway giving us obstacles to avoid. We noted that the further we went, the fresher the manure, until we came up behind a herd of more than 250 head of cattle being moved up the road by three wranglers. The instructions were to "make your way through", which we did over the next mile or so. A few skitterish calves and cows but a refreshing experience for both cows and bikers. After a short break in Plush, OR we headed across wetlands and up to the Hart Mountain Na- tional Antelope Refuge. The road across the plateau was mostly washboard for the next 60 miles or so. Yes, we did see a herd of antelope in the distance. When we reached highway 205, we headed south to take the Steen Mountain Loop for more than 50 miles. Our approach to Steen Mountain was from the South and the gravel road had too much fresh gravel. Nonethe- less we slowly danced our bikes around numerous curves and slopes. It took us an hour to reach the summit where it was cold and windy. The view from the top, at just under 10,000 feet,

Our route off the mountain followed a much easier and more gradual route to Fernglen. We had ridden 200 miles this day and were glad to have refreshments from the local general store. We also refueled from the first gas station I have seen using the honor system for pay- ment. Sunday morning we departed Frenchglen about 8 AM with the objective of arriving in Fields, OR about opening time. We were early and had to wait for staff to arrive to top off our bike fuel and prepare the rider fuel. The Fields Store was a combination gas station, restaurant, and general store. Hearty breakfasts and much coffee were consumed before leaving about 9 AM. We cruised south about 80 miles through Denio to the Leonard Creek rest area and the road opposite. We turned to the southwest headed for the southern border of the Black Rock De- sert. We had about 12 miles of paving before the dirt and gravel which would extend another 80 miles or so. The roadbed varied over the course of the next few hours from hard pack, which we liked, to dust and dust holes intermingled with turns. There was little pattern to the direction and curves of the road. Perhaps it was laid out by pioneers wandering back and forth in search of places to rest. We rested about halfway to Gerlach and shed clothing as the temperature approached 80 de- grees. Not much to see on this part of the trek. Mountains to the left and an occasional build- ing or windmill. When we reached what we believe was Sulfur there was a gigantic mine to the south and a railroad crossing. Seemed like we'd never see the playa or Gerlach, but in due course it appeared on the horizon. Pavement at last and a quick burst into Gerlach for fuel. The group separated for the final 90 miles home, some leaving immediately and the rest seek- ing refreshment in Gerlach and Empire. Three days, 750 miles (250, 200, 300), and a great adventure. Many thanks to Mike Wallace for arranging near-perfect weather, a prime rib dinner, and an entertaining ride.

The trip started in 1996. Katie and I were on a full service motorcycle tour in the Alps and Italy. The “best” Alpine pass for that tour was Gross Glockner in Austria. It snowed and the pass was closed when we got there. I vowed to return! In 2018, we did! Katie and I started planning this in 2017. I contacted Ayres Adventures, with whom we had done 2 full service motorcycle tours before. I asked if they could help set up a self guided tour. They were happy to help. I told them the parameters: Ride Gross Glockner pass, Stelvio pass, the Do- lomites; 10 days of riding; max 200 miles per day; at least 2 nights at each stop; 3 star hotels; start and finish in Munich. Ayres arranged for the rental of the (2 BMW RTs), the hotels and provided suggested routes and waypoints for the 10 days of riding. We arrived in Munich, Germany 2 days early and visited the BMW World museum among other sightseeing. The BMW R1200 RTs were delivered to the hotel on the afternoon before we started riding. We packed the side cases and were off in the morning. The suitcases stayed at the hotel. The delivery of the bikes was not without a scary moment. I chose the red bike. The rental guy couldn’t find the actual key, but the bike would start. He decided that the electronic key was locked in the trunk, along with the trunk key!. He drove back to his home to retrieve backup keys for the trunk. I took the bike to the underground parking garage. There the bike would not start, so I assumed the key was in his van. He came back about 2 hours later with about 100 trunk keys. On the 95th try, we found a key that worked, and yep, that is where the key was. Day 1 took us over Gross Glockner pass. A beautiful day. We went up to the high point named Edelweiss Spitze for a spectacular view.

On the way to Gross Glockner, we stopped for a snack at the home of fellow motorcycling Rotarian, Anton Mosshammer. A great way to visit with the “locals” whiole having Rotary and motorcycling as our common bond. Anton is willing and enthusiastic about helping others or- ganize motorcycle tours in the region. We ended the day in Lienz, Austria. In the hotel I found beer in a vending machine in the lob- by! Day 2 was a loop to the east of Lienz. Beautiful mountain riding with several minor passes. The highlight was Lake Millstatt for a lunch stop.

In Lienz, motorcycling Rotarian Pilli and Krista von Prancke joined us for dinner and for the ride the next day to Bolzano. Very nice people. Day 3 took us from Lienz to Bolzano, Italy via several major passes. We stopped for coffee at beautiful Lake Misurina. Unfortunately we got separated from Pilli and Krista. We made it to the top of Passo di Falzarego. I think I made a wrong turn and we missed Passo di Giao. That may have beena blessing. Pilli and Krista ran into a heavy thundershower, while we avoided it. We also did Passo di Pordoi.

Day 4 was a loop through the heart of the Dolomites. We circled the Sella Group of mountains.

Day 5 the girls decided to take a day off the bikes. Jim and I went on a loop which included Men- del pass. It was to the west of Bolzano. We avoided some thundershowers. The weather had cooled down a bit from when we started.

Day 6 was the ride from Bolzano to Gravedona on Lake Como in Italy. It was to be our day to go over the famous Passo di Stelvio. Due to the cooler weather, the altitude of Stelvio and the thunderstorms, there was a threat of ice on the road up high. Fortunately we were in touch with 2 more motorcycling Rotarians who confirmed this. Carlo Linetti joined us in the morning to guide us on an alternate route. We had opportunity to travel Stelvio later. On the way, we were joined by Gino, another motorcycling Rotarian. While following them, we became further immersed in the motorcycling habits of the Europeans. We had noticed that they pass cars pretty much any time they like, even with oncoming traffic! The cars seem to expect this and there didn’t seem to be any close calls. I was obviously very conserva- tive….until today, following Carlo and Gino! Our route took us north and west through Switzerland and then on to Lake Como. We had a nice lunch stop by a lake accompanied by great conversation! Carlo had to leave after lunch because he had a presentation to give that night. He was a very fast rider and has been on the track with Jorge Lorenzo, on of Ducatis MotoGP racers!! He was going to travel about 90 miles in 60 minutes!

GPSs are wonderful devices. But you need to always be alert. It is a computer and only knows “shortest distance” or “fastest route” And you never know the parameters it is using to calculate the route. Here is the “road” it wanted me to turn down to get to our hotel:

That is about 6 to 8 ft wide! Thankfully it recalculated a better route and we got to the hotel safe- ly! Also, while leading Pilli and Krista earlier, the GPS lead me through a pedestrian-only area. Boy, did I feel out of place. Day 7 was a free/rest day at Lake Como. We all decided to take the ferry across Lake Como to Bellagio and then to Varenna. In both places we toured villas, gardens and lots of high end shops. I did find a restaurant serving “craft beer”. However, nothing like we have here in the good old USA! I am spoiled!

Day 8 was a ride from Lake Como to Pfunds, Austria. We had a route planned to go over Stelvio and we took that route. Before Stelvio was Gavia pass. VERY narrow road with VERY sharp switchbacks, 2 way traffic and no guardrails. To be honest, I was a bit freaked out, but made it successfully.

Volume 28 Issue 10 The High Beemers M/C of Northern Nevada BMWMOA Chartered Club #337, BMWRA Charter #75, AMA Charter #3185301 Page 21 Dim Bulb Oct 2018

After Gavia Pass, we came to Stelvio Pass. There are 3 roads up to Stelvio pass: 1 from Italy, 1 from Austria and 1 from Switzerland. We arrived on the road up from Italy. The famous side is the Austria side. It has 50 switchbacks and you can see most of them from the top. That is the famous picture!

We stayed at the top for a bit and we could see way down the road there was a truck or a bus that was blocking one of the switchbacks. Dead stop traffic was growing. After ½ hour, there was no budging of the blocking vehicle. We decided to go down the Switzerland side. A bit of a disappointment at the time. Day 9 was to be a loop ride from Pfunds to go over several major passes: Jaufenpass and Tim- melsjoch. Probably wonderful passes! But Jim suggested we go back to Stelvio, since we were close enough. Great choice! The girls decided to take a day off the bikes. Riding the twisty roads with no luggage and no passenger is quite a bit more relaxing. We went up and then down the famous 50 switchbacks on the Austria side with minimal traffic. Great day!! Jim

The European motorcycle riders in the Alps are VERY fast. Jim and I decided if we went as fast as we could, we would never keep up with their slowest rider. Here is another vehicle we saw going up Stelvio, from Great Britain:

Which brings us to day 10, our last day on the bikes. We are riding from Pfunds Austria back to Munich. We had some very slight drizzles on earlier days, but today we had intermittent steady, but light, rain almost all day. We made a brief stop at a very large cathedral and then on to Lud- wig’s castle. No pictures allowed inside the castle. It was huge and fascinating. Walt Disney used this castle as the model for his castle at the original Disneyland.

We arrived back at the same hotel in Munich rather tired after a long day. We unloaded the bikes and they were picked up at about 9pm by the rental company. Everything was in order. 1188 miles!! Now we start our trip to the Amalfi coast!! We packed the suitcases and left the motorcycle gear at the hotel. We flew to Naples, Italy for a 2 night stay. This part of the trip was orga- nized by Katie using a tour company called the Roman Guy. It was a custom itinerary just for us. Larie documented the rest of the trip with beautiful pictures and was willing to share it with the club members, feel free to ask him for the full writeup.

2018 High Beemer Rides ------The following are the planned dates of the rides for the upcoming year. If you would like to be the leader of any of the High Beemer CR or GS rides, let me know via email ([email protected]) or at the January 28th dinner meeting.

Breakfast Rides (BR) are on the third Monday of each month, starting at Starbucks on Wedge Parkway. Doug Laird or his backup (Nick) will lead the rides. Destinations are determined by the riders in attendance. Usually back in Reno by 12-12:30pm. These rides are held year around and if the weather is inclement everyone is encouraged to show up in an alternate vehicle.

Club Rides (CR) are road rides that occur on third Saturday or Sunday of each month. The ride leader will de- termine the ride date, gathering point, route, and lunch location. The ride leader shares the details of the ride with everyone via our club forum, email and newsletter. On the day of the ride, the leader takes a headcount at the gathering point and then calls ahead to the restaurant to make a reservation for the group. The route is a road ride, usually several hours long, possibly with a break stop on the way to the lunch site. The return trip is often open, allowing riders the option of returning to Reno as a group, or on their own.

Off Road Rides (GS) are on the fourth Saturday or Sunday of each month. The GS leader follows the same procedures as a Club Ride, except that the GS ride might include a “brown bag” lunch (rather than a restau- rant lunch) due to routing.

HIGH BEEMERS GROUP RIDE GUIDELINES: The purpose of the High Beemer Group Ride Guidelines is to ensure a successful, enjoyable, and safe group ride. Ride Leader Responsibilities: Determines the following: 1 - Where to? 2 – Distance & Time to complete the ride. 3 – Availability of gas/convenience stops. 4 – Lunch/Dinner location. 5 – Performs a pre-ride to validate distance, time, gas/convenience stops, lunch/ dinner location, and condition of roads. 6 – Enlists a member to act as Sweeper for the ride. 7 – Adjusts ride plan as required. 8 – Communicates ride plan to members. Sweeper Responsibilities: 1 – Have a cell phone. 2 – Have a camera (optional). 3 – Have cell phone number of Ride Leader and at least two other riders. 4 – Ensures that they are the last rider. If another rider stops, the Sweeper is available to provide assistance if necessary. 5 – Communicates to Ride Leader via cell phone to apprise him/her of any potential situa- tion the Ride Leader needs to be aware of. Ride Leader Responsibilities – Day of Ride: 1 – Ensure that you have exchanged cell phone numbers with the Sweeper and have cell phone numbers of at least two other riders. 2 – Distribute directions and an itinerary to all riders. 3 – Ensure that a first aid kit and tool kit are available. 4 – Keep groups manageable. An ideal group size is 5 – 7 riders. If more riders are availa- ble, break the ride into groups, depending on total number of riders. Assign responsibilities as required. 5 – Take a physical count on total number of riders. 6 – Review the ride itinerary with all riders prior to departure.

Group Rider’s Responsibilities: 1 – Arrive prepared (full gas tank) and on time. 2 – Ride in Formation: (Highway – Staggered Formation) Ride Leader should be in left third of lane. Next rider should be in right third of lane, next rider back to the left third of lane and so on. Preferably there should be a two second gap between riders. Riders should ride single file when the road conditions are curvy; there is poor visibility, and poor road surfaces, when entering/ leaving the highway or other situations when an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is required. MSF recommends a minimum of two seconds between riders. NOTE: Avoid side by side formation. If you needed to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so.

3 – If separated from the group, don’t panic. Each rider should know before hand the destination and be provided with directions. 4 – For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants. 5 - If a rider plans to ride on their own and eventually meet up with the group, the ride leader should be advised prior to departure. 6 - If a rider plans to break off from the group they should advise the ride leader at a rally point or meeting location prior to leaving the group. 7 - All riders/passengers must obey state law and wear an approved helmet.

NOTE: No Alcohol should be consumed on a club ride. 8 - It is highly recommended that all riders/passengers wear protective clothing while on club rides. 9 - We represent motorcyclists to motorists so PLEASE drive appropriately. 10 - This is a group ride that riders have chosen to participate in. Riders: please be patient, toler- ant and respectful of others needs; please try to stay together and look out for the well being of other participants. 11 – Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror. If you see a rider falling be- hind, slow down so they may catch up. If all riders in the group use this technique, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up. 12 – Each rider is responsible for the rider behind him. The rider should SAFELY pause at each major turn to ensure the following rider stays on the route. The rider waits until the following rider is able to continue. 13 - Someone from the ride should write a story of the trip for the newsletter editor.

Enjoy the ride!
